“You look too young to be a mom!”
“You look too young to be a mom!”
Or how about …
“You have a BABY? No! You look like a baby yourself!”👶
Oh wait, here’s a good one …
“Are you the nanny, ooor … ?”
“No, yeah I’m his mom,” I’d reply. “Yes, I am young,” I’d agree.
Considering I got pregnant straight out of college, I was certainly on the younger end of the parenting spectrum. (No one was more surprised than me, I assure you.) And yet, I wasn’t exactly a teen mom. I wasn’t juggling school courses and motherhood, like so many student moms. I had my own apartment and generally lived like a grown up, despite the thrift-store furniture and empty bank account. I know that some 21 year olds are just starting grad school, or living a parent-coddled lifestyle, but me? I was off into the world with a crisp college diploma, a new full-time job, and a fetus in my womb. I’m not sure I had even thought about my womb up until that point in life, until it was inhabited.💗
Yes, I know, I am quite young.
I knew I’d be a young mom; I was just surprised at how often the outside world would remind me. And directly, I might add. I would never think to walk up to a random person in the mall food court and ask, “Wow, how old are you?” — half accusing, half astonished — and yet it’s happened, right in front of my eyes.👀
Often people were just making small talk, as they do, not meaning much harm. We’ve all made knee-jerk comments that we can’t back-peddle away from fast enough. Whether we’re a young mom (“Are you his babysitter?”) or an old mom (“Are you his grandma?”) — whether we have too few children or too many — we all have a set of repetitive comments, as well as a running list of witty comebacks that we rehearse during quiet late-night feedings. The Q&A loop is certainly redundant, but we can at least recognize that most of them are done innocently (or ignorantly, whichever you prefer).
Take the 50-something lady ahead of me at the supermarket, eying my bright-eyed toddler with nostalgia splashed across her face. When she said, “He’s your baby? A baby having a baby!” she didn’t know that two other strangers had said something shockingly similar in the last six hours. She didn’t know how much I dreaded answering yet another question about my age, or how defensive I got — locked and loaded with justifications and life credentials to assure her that I’m not the stereotypical “young mom” who, if Internet commenters are to be believed, “will never do anything significant beyond popping out babies and draining our economy.”
When a Disney cruise hostess sat us for breakfast and asked, “Is he yours? Yes? Look so young,” in her charming exotic accent, she was being cruise-ship friendly — complimentary, even.
“Oh, ha! Yes, well I’m 26,” I warmly replied.😉
“Wow! I thought you were 18!” she said, laying it on thick.
But you see, I found it to be more amusing than irritating by the age of 26. By that point, I had proven myself competent enough to avoid the tongue-clucks of strangers — not like my bulging stomach and bare ring finger attracted. I had more confidence, more comfort in my role. I took pride in owning up to my chronological age — yes I’m only 26, but look at how happy my child is! And I haven’t burnt down my life, not even once!
But it wasn’t always that way — OH NO. In the beginning, I had serious anxiety and embarrassment over the comments. In fact, 26 is the age I once pretended to be, back when I was 23 and lying about my age. One of the first blog posts I ever wrote on this here Internet was titled, “Confession: I Lie About My Age,” and I continue to get emails about it to this day.
“ME TOO,” say all the young moms who email or comment. They relate to my frustration, my embarrassment, to the way strangers transparently searched my face for an age. They, too, have added two or three years onto their responses, just to cushion the reaction. Looking back at the post, I see my former self dripping in insecurity. (I actually ended the post with the always-mature, “SO THERE.”)😅
I didn’t realize it then, but a lot of the judgment I felt from strangers was amplified by my own judgment toward myself. I compared myself to the “real moms” in the world. I had a perpetual fear of being “not enough,” which I saw reflected in the wide-eyed reactions of strangers and family alike.
I was also very young. (Yes, I know, we’ve established this.) What I mean is that I hadn’t lived quite as many years, or had as many perspective-shifting experiences as an older mom may have. I didn’t understand that people weren’t wagging their fingers and making blanket prophecies because they had some kind of grown-up insight that I was missing; it’s because all grown-ups get judged for something. It’s because all humans feel insecure and judgmental, inward and outward. It’s because people can be really rude and inappropriate, and that’s more a reflection of them than us.
I wish I knew that things would turn out just fine; that I’d find quite a few perks to being a young mom. I wish I knew how little my age would matter as I gained more confidence and experience.
But more than anything, I wish I could have batted my eyes and fluffed my hair, saying, “Do I look young? Darling, you’re too kind.”😜

I look very young, I'm almost embarrassed to go out in public. Also coming to terms with the fact my child will probably look a different race than me. Im expecting a lot of this.

this really helped me out this morning. I've been having such trouble becoming a mom at 20. I've obviously come to enjoy it now and excepted it but its hard when I'm in public and I get stared at by other moms and girls my age or younger. I didn't want to go to a family party because I'm self conscious of my body and how its growing. I don't want the same million questions people to ask me over and over. people think that I just want to play house and think I ruined my life. I don't think that at all every time he kicks me or every time I see him on a sono, my son makes me so happy. maybe he came a little earlier than I wanted but everything in life happens for a reason..

I'm 20 and I get strange looks sometimes because without makeup I look younger. When I was pregnant I got it more than now. Once when I was pregnant I was at a birthday party for my uncle and one of his friends was talking to me and my mom and saying how it's exciting that I'm having a baby and she can't wait to be a grandma. And added in "but not yet! My kids are too young, I would kill them!" And they were about 5 years older than me.

I can relate to this, I was 23 when I got pregnant and had my daughter, and my hubby was 22. We were still living with his parents and moved out when she was 6 months old on our own after saving and doing the responsible thing, taking care of ourselves and our daughter! And yet, not even a month after we moved (cross state, to boot), I am at the mall with MY daughter, who I carried for 40 weeks and 5 days and who I STILL breastfeed at 9 months (this was at Easter and she was 7 months though), and some lady comes up and is talking about how cute she is and chatting, and she mentioned that she was chewing on my wallet, must be teething...."but auntie doesn't mind!" and WALKS AWAY. She dropped the bomb and walked away.....I was so insulted, I couldn't say a thing.....and it wasn't even an insulting thing to say, just the fact that she assumed I was her AUNTIE and not her MOMMY was so insulting! It actually hit me in the ego hard, even though I know I should have been flattered....I worked my ass off to create, birth (all natural I might add, with two 2nd degree tears OUCH), breastfeed, and raise my baby girl and this woman just reduced me to aunt-status because I look young....never mind the dark circles under my eyes from lack of sleep (she sleeps through but not mommy!), nevermind the crumbs on my shirt from her dirty little hands, nevermind the milk stained bra and the engorged breasts, nevermind the loose skin, wider hips and stretch marks, nevermind the fact that my daughter looks a LOT like me, and she holds onto me like a lil monkey, always wanting mama when she is hurt, tired or hungry and no one else....I wish I could have corrected her, it sounds dumb, but it got me! End rant...thanks for the post Preggie!

I can completely relate. I myself got pregnant with my first child at the age of 13 and gave birth at 14. the biggest judgement I had at that time was from the people that attended my foster parents church. I was told I was a disgrace to the community and I should be ashamed. as I got older I received the stares and rude comments as said above and now that I am pregnant at 24 with my second child people ask if its my first and when I proudly say no that I have a 9 year old daughter, which turns 10 two days after my due date, they always look at me and say there's no way because I don't even look old enough to have a 9 year old. I have come to know in these past ten years to just let it roll off of shoulders because I know and the good Lord knows that even though I was so young my daughter is and always have been well taken care of. I am proud to say I am young mother of two. :)

My job when my son was in kindergarten was very laid back jeans and t-shirts type environment. When I would pick up my son which was about 3x a week from school. I would get letters from them, and they would say, "give this to his mom sweetie, your such a good big sister. I would just laugh, finally I was like I am his mom. I'm 19, married and have a beautiful little girl. People look at me with strange looks or side comments. I usually just smile and say "yeah I'm young but I wouldn't trade being my daughter's mother for the world." To me age doesn't determine what type of mother someone will be. Some young mothers are amazing moms. To me people staring or making comments doesn't bother me because I know my daughter is well taken care of and loved more than ever by me and her dad.

I was 21 when I found out I was pregnant. There are always gonna be those people who have rude things to say. For example; when a family friend found out about my pregnancy they gave my mom a big hug and basically acted like someone had just died. This reaction makes me very angry! Yes, I wasn't expected to get pregnant at this point in time, but it's a blessing, not a death sentence!? I'm only twenty with about 4 years of college credits. I work two jobs and have three step kids that I claim as my own. I am constantly told that I am growing up too fast or that I am not going to be able to enjoy my life. Truth is, I had to grow up fast, fending for yourself from age 4 you have to learn to take care of yourself. But as for enjoying my life, I couldn't ask for a better one. I love my jobs, my kiddos love me and always are happy to see me, I have the best fiancé a woman could ask for and me and the baby are healthy. What more could I ask for in life? Nothing. So yes I am exchanging the party life for a working mom and soon to be wife, but the party life was never meant for me. I love what my life has turned out to be, from having nothing to having everything I could ever hope for.

it was my first pregnancy , I was a newly wed spouse we were military. Being my first pregnancy I didn't know much about being pregnant. I was really sick I ended in the hospital for a good week. I had a kidney infection. So fast forward to my induction date (she stopped growing at 28wks) I was 36wks , So I am getting all the paperwork filled out for epidural and all that good stuff. I have this older nurse walk in and tell me I can't sign my paper work I need my guardian. So they can release me and my baby. its such a shame to have a 12 yr old having babies. I looked at her and I said I'm sorry ma'am but I'm 19 and I'm married. she double checked my chart. She simply said I look underage . I'm 28 and I still get carded .. It's stressful enough with planning a wedding and having a baby- all at 18- I don't need the added stress of wondering if people will judge me or how my child is going to be treated by having a young mom. I go home and cry some days because it makes me feel so self conscious. I wish people would realize how rude it is to go up to someone with a child and ask if they're theirs. To tell someone they look 12. My pregnancy was a shock but I embraced it and I love my daughter more than life itself. I'm going to be 22 in August. We got married in March and had our baby last week. So far we haven't had too bad of reactions from people. But I do notice looks of disappointment and disapproval, especially when my hands are too swollen to wear my rings. Even if they are on my chain around my neck. We are young, but we are proud of where we are (we got here on our own, leaning on each other. No help from his family and no support from either.) I am proud to be a young mom and him a young dad. It doesn't mean our life is on hold or over. It isn't always easy, but we are so blessed. 😍 I enjoy reading articles like this because it reminds me (especially on days that I'm struggling) that it is worth it and I am not the only mom who is going through it. I'm 22 but had my daughter at 21... And she was planned! My husband and I were just ready for a baby. We wanted to start our family and we're both glad we did! And for being young it's ok! We both support each other and our daughter and we have the energy to do it!

I had my first son 4 months before turning 18 and had my second son 4 months before my 19 birthday ( I'm still 19 lol ) . Being a young mother doesn't define you , what you do as a mother is what defines you . (Like not being responsible )

I look twelve without makeup, and sometimes even with! I can't imagine the comments I'll be getting. I'm 19. When my boyfriend told his grandmother she said "well you better get married soon before she starts showing! Imagine how bad the family will look!" I cried.

I'm 20 turning 21 with my first on the way (and have the height and face of a 12 year old, even with all my piercings and tattoos I still get the "oh! I thought you were in middle school!" And everything else stupid to go along with those comments) and still living at home, I found out I was pregnant at the beginning of the second semester of my junior year of college, only about 4 months after my 20th birthday, and it was definitely a shock because I'm "one of the good ones" (as a lot of people try to "nicely" put that I'm not the statistic they expect girls my age in my town and race to be). I wasn't able to finish this school year the way I wanted to, and unfortunately can't even register for my fall semester because I'm due around the time we'll start midterms and probably won't be finished healing and able to fully function again until around finals time, but I'm definitely going to go back to school. I don't look at my baby girl as a burden or the end of my life as I know it, I just look at her as a new chapter of my life and I'm beyond excited; no she wasn't planned and I didn't imagine my life like this, but I'm beyond grateful for where my life is about to go.

i was 14 when pregnant delivered at 15 i was very young, we married and had 3 children together until he passed from cancer He was my first love , we never were on assistance or lived in housing and the only reason I say that is because that's what people assume right away when they know you were or are a young parent. I'm 36 years old and still get that to this day if I'm on assistance or if I live in housing and I never have been on either my whole life. I'm proud to say that I never was being such a young mom.my oldest is 21 and im 36.You can make it we don't have to end up being a statistic.

I was 18 turning 19 and a second year senior when I was pregnant with my daughter...because of some bad situations I ended up moving with my parents and oldest sister to Texas from Indiana. By the time my baby's father came down, she was already 5 months old, and we moved here to cali. My daughter is now 3 years old and I have a newborn son who was born on 5/18/16, I have been married to my highschool sweetheart and father of my children for 9 months. We both may be young (me:22 him:23) but we have made it work, we both are highschool graduates, own place, own car, and my husband has a well paying job. We don't get government assistants except ssi for my daughter because she was born with mental and physical disabilities. The entire time I was pregnant with both my children I always got the "your just a baby" "your so young" "I bet they weren't planed".....my respones is always a smile on my face and saying yes I'm young and that just means that I get to spend even more time with my children than what I would have it I had them later....this also means that when my children are grown up my husband and I can retire early while still young our selves and enjoy the world.

I was 15 when I got pregnant & delivered my baby girl. Next week she will graduate high school. But I remember when she was in elementary school it was conferance week & her teacher thanked me for coming to the meeting but next time she would like for my mom to come in. I was like why does why does Gabis (my daughter) grandmother need to be here? Im her mother. Needless to say her teacher had a major case of foot in mouth. To this day people think I am her older sister. I dont let it bother me any more. I love being a young mother.

I'm 22 with my 3 month old daughter, I'm also a lesbian so that raises questions and I'm even married to a woman, she and I are separated because she was emotionally and physically abusive and I got with my current girlfriend a year and a half ago and we planned on starting a family. I get told I look 14-16 and so I get PLENTY of weird looks.

Married, first time mom, and recent college graduate. All at the wonderful age of 21💗 I've been told I'm too young to have been with my husband for as long as we've been together, and that I'm too young to be a mom. OH WELL. My life, my happiness💗

@twinsmama16, yeah, I know how that is too, I'm 36 and my oldest is a junior in high school, I still look like I should be a student sometimes depending on how I'm dressed and my hair/make up. But like you now I take it as a compliment! :)

this mothers day actually! I didn't have my son with me, and they gave out roses to all the mothers at the restaurant we ate when we finished our meal. they gave everyone a rose except me, and my mom pulled the waitress to the side and said, "she's a mommy too. she has a two year old and is expecting!" the lady replied back while looking at me like I killed someone, "OH you look only like 17. way too young!" she brought me a rose and we went on our way but for a second I felt sad because I have TWO babies and apparently I look way young. I can only imagine what strangers say behind my back 😂

I'm 20 and just had my first baby (a girl), when I'm out with my baby it's usually for a walk or grocery shopping. I'll never understand how people can give such judgmental looks to someone they don't know. People in the store scoff and give me a disapproving look... I'm a good mom and I love my girl more than anything in the world, when people find out I'm a single mom they get even more judgmental "your 20 AND a single parent? That's why you should have waited"

i am 19 I'll be 20 in July i have a little boy born in March 31,2016. I completely get were you are coming from I had just graduated high school. when i found out and i was in the beginning of my there'd term of college when he was born my first day of one of my classes i had to miss because it was the day of my discharge from the hospital. i do online and quick courses. and I'm getting my AAS in Early childhood development. I bring him to my quick courses classes and every one is surprised at how yong i am and every one tells me how good of a job i am doing as a student /young mom. but i still get those looks in the store. some of it is because of how yong i am and some is because im with a man twice my age.

I had my first born at 19 I hated when asked are you his sister when taking him to school or teachers asking me my age. Now I get you look way too young to have a 12 year old. I'm 31 and older women still give me a disapproving look like she's pregnant... I have good genes but I'm far from teenage early twenties lol

I'll be turning 24 next week and just recently had my first son in April...I've gotten looks in the stores. The only comment I've received though, is from my sister's father in law "No way, I didn't think you were stupid! You just threw your whole life away...say goodbye to the happy days" I just replied "oh, but they've just begun. My son is my happiness" 😘

I had my first young luckily no one did you're to young stuff with me, they just thought I would make a wonderful mom. But believe it or not now that I'm a mom of 10 new people I meet say, oh my God how old are you I thought that was your sister or brother or them thinking my son is my husband, oh yeah and I get the don't you watch TV thing, but the worst thing I've heard is don't have no more. I always think to myself why do you care I not asking you for your help nor is my family on welfare. Most people older then us don't even have a house and being a young mom I wanted to have something to call ours own, so I brought a house free and clear we never have to worry about a place to stay or most things people have to worry about and for that I'm thankful. I may have had my kids young and have a lot of kids but my husband and I never miss a beat and our kids are all straight A students and my teens also have full time job and are very Happy. And no it was not always easy but we are all happy. I think some people are not happy with the life they chose and just have to find something to say about other people, just enjoy yourselves and your babies because they grow up so fast.

I'm 23 almost 24 and have 2 boys (2, 5 months). Idk if it's where I'm from or what but I've gotten some looks but never any comments. I know I look younger then 23 cause I'm always ID'd when buying tobacco or alcohol for the hubby, but I take it as a good thing!
