The day you leave hospital do you bring car seat up to room and strap them in and bring them to the car or do you leave car seat in the car and carry your baby in arms to car and strap them? Lol might be a stupid question...
We're having mixed emotions about the new car seat...is it just me or does it seem too loose on her stomach...the straps are tight on her shoulders and the chest clip is right up against her chest BUT the straps are about an inch from her tummy...is that ok ?
Share pictures of you littles in their car seats for a CAR SEAT FIT CHECK 😊 I am a CPST (Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician) and would be more than happy to help you double check that your seat is fitting your little one correctly - proper strap placement, chest clip placement, strap tightness etc. plus any other questions you may have! You can also send me a private message if you prefer 🙂 Other helpful info would be if your child is rear facing or forward facing, their age/height/weight, and the name of the car seat you’re using. I’ll share first! My littlest is 18 months, 28lbs, and 30ish inches long. And she is sitting rear facing in a Diono Rainier. 😊 The straps are coming from below her shoulders, her chest clip is at nipple/arm pit level, there’s no slack in her harness, and there aren’t any aftermarket products attached to her straps or added to her car seat! ✅ 🙂 *please no bashing or mommy shaming for being “overprotective” or for any misuse you may see - it’s more common than you think 😉
Do you remove your child's coat before buckling them in their car seat?
Here’s a visual for you. My little girl is buckled into her car seat correctly. Her straps are over her shoulders, coming from below her shoulders, her CHEST clip is armpit level, and I can't pinch any slack above her shoulders. My little boy is buckled in incorrectly. His CHEST chip is between his belly button and chest, his straps are VERY loose. If we were to get into a car accident he would most likely be ejected from his car seat and flung forward. If you do not feel confident to flip your child upside down in a 5 point harness, THEY ARE NOT STRAPPED IN CORRECTLY. It is your obligation as a parent to make sure your tiny people are safe. It is not an opinion. It is an obligation. And it is the law in Oklahoma to rear face your BABY till 2. *** NOT MY POST**** just felt it was definitely worth sharing here🖤

Ugh, really? You'd think they'd have some sort of suggestions at least.
Do you have a fb? You can contact car seats for the littles and see if they have advice.

I actually did call them. They said it's not a manufacturing error that he can push the chest clip down. All they could do was send me another chest clip that will do the same thing?
deleted-user·
Call your car seat manufacturer and ask for a tech and their opinion.

Yeah I told my husband about the police thing and he said the same thing. We are not going to do that. The problem is most of the time it's just me and my son alone. My husband works full time. So I am the one driving around with him, so I can't drive and sit in back seat at the same time lol. And the safety pin thing is not a good idea either. He will get those off and hurt himself
deleted-user·
Agreed about the police thing.
deleted-user·
The police thing is a terrible approach.
deleted-user·
I just had to comment.. everyone, please DO NOT tell your child the police will come and take them away if they are doing something bad. All that does is scare them into thinking police are bad people. Say they get lost and a police officer tries to help them find you (their parents) and they won't cooperate because they're scared of the police! It's really not a good idea to scare your kids like that.
deleted-user·
Also at this point of you think turning him ff will keep him in his seat then I'd do that. Him being properly buckled in his seat ff is safer than him unbuckling himself but rf.
deleted-user·
What do you do at home when he's not listening or doing something unsafe? Can you put gloves/mittens on him, the ones with the Velcro around the wrists so it's hard for him to take them off? If he'll be able to figure out how to take them off it will at least buy you a little time before you have to pull over. Is there a toy he really likes? Maybe distract him with a toy? My kids LOVE painted rocks, if I need their hands busy I'll tell them to hold onto their pretty rock. Maybe if you tell him you'll take whatever toy he's holding away if he messes with his seat he'll stop? Idk, but if all else fails he definitely wouldn't be allowed to ride in the back alone, and that would be a huge pain in the arse I'm sure. We have two Chicco Nextfit car seats and my kids can buckle the chest clip, but can't unbuckle it and they can't do either for the other buckle. It's not easy to unbuckle the seat, sometimes it's even hard for me to do it.
deleted-user·
You could just sit in the back with him and stop him in the process. Eventually he'll stop.
Short term pain, long term gain.
deleted-user·
Honestly, at this point, I wouldn't let him ride in the backseat alone. This is way too dangerous.

I'm not sure if these are allowed in the US but there are car seats on the market here that have an impact cushion instead of straps. It may be something for you to look into if you are going to change car seats rather than spending money on another one with straps he can also get out of.

My son does not even know what police are yet, he just turned 2 in May. That will not work. He will not understand
deleted-user·
The one time I caught DS1 doing that I repeated what I'd heard others say.
'Oh No!!! If you unbuckle yourself while the car is on the police will come and take you away! We will never see each other again!' Then start crying.
Within moments he was crying too and begging me not to let the police take him away. He re-clipped his buckle and readjusted it correctly too.
He has never undone his clips or buckles since unless he asks first AND I say yes.
(This method took 3 tries with one niece and 2 tries with a nephew)
Note: he is not afraid of police, but he knows that they enforce rules.
Edit to add: he's 3 now and his only incident occurred a year ago (while he was 2).
Also the more dramatic your response the better! I saw/heard him unbuckle. Then I immediately pictured a severe wreck to upset myself. As I pulled over the car I had tears rolling down my face. Then once we stopped I cried out the Oh No statement. I got out, opened his door and finished with the police statement. All the while crying dramatically. It really helped that a trooper drove by with his lights blaring.
He was crying 'mommy, he's not coming to take me away, please don't let him take me away.'
I responded with 'as long as you Never undo your straps when the truck is on the police will let you stay with us. I love you honey! I don't want to lose you. Can you promise me?'
He promised and we went on our way.
2-3 year olds are a lot smarter than you may think.
deleted-user·
My son went through this. He knew how to loosen the straps on the bottom then get out of the straps. Now that he's older he's grown out of it and stays in his seat. I'd constantly have to pull over and he'd get in trouble.
deleted-user·
There's a thing for sale called the Houdini stop. It's made for this. I don't have one so not sure if it actually works.
Andy·
Мама сына (2 года), беременна (17 нед.)
I could try that but I think he also knows how to unclamp the chest clip
deleted-user·
Put safety pins through the straps below the buckles. They will lock the buckles in place so they can't be slid down. Old fashioned diaper pins have a locking mechanism to make it harder to open the pin https://www.amazon.com/Child-Infant-Diaper-Safety-Locking/dp/B009TO9VJY
Andy·
Мама сына (2 года), беременна (17 нед.)
Yes I did put them back on. He can still push down chest clip. I think we have to go look at new chairs. It's IUr only option anymore. Its just crazy that my husband's aunt's and uncle have car seats for him in their cars and he does not get out of them they are a different brand then what we have
deleted-user·
Did you put the strap covers back on? Ours barely moves with those things on. Our Diono Ranier is pretty tough, my 3 yo has figured out how to Buckle our Chicco, but not unbuckle yet.
You can always go to the store and sit him in a few to test it out.
Andy·
Мама сына (2 года), беременна (17 нед.)
Yes we even tried positive reinforcement
deleted-user·
I know you aren't supposed to use them but if nothing else is working you might need to try it. Unless there's another car seat he can't unbuckle. My DD hasn't ever tried but we have the Chicco Nextfit. It seems pretty challenging to unbuckle.
deleted-user·
You're right, no after market products.
Habe you tried positive reinforcement for when he leaves the buckles alone for a while trip? That's the only other suggestion I can think of.
Andy·
Мама сына (2 года), беременна (17 нед.)
I heard you are not supposed to use after market products on car seats. Also my son is way too young to understand if I told him the cops would not like it lol. He just turned 2 in May. We tried the pulling over everytime he took it off and told him no, it's not safe. After a month if doing that after every 5 mins, it gets old and does not work for him. Thanks guys

A friend of mine has had success with this for her 2 year old who escapes her car seat regularly. I don't think she's been able to escape since they started using it.

So going back to this, it's been about 3 months and now at only 2 years old he knows how to unbutton the shirt we use when he's in the car seat. So now it's back to square one with this problem of him getting out of car seat. Now we are really thinking about getting another seat, but I'm afraid he will get out of it to. Anyone know a good car seat that a toddler cannot get out of and undo all the buckles and clamps? Or a seat where they can't push down the chest clip?
deleted-user·
Good luck! Surely one of those options is bound to work. ?
Andy·
Мама сына (1 год), беременна (4 нед.)
Ok I will try that for sure then. Just have to go get a button up shirt. They are also sending me a new chest clip, but I dont think it's going to do anything
deleted-user·
He's not even 2 yet there is PLENTY of time to teach him not to touch the chest clip, the shirt trick is a great way to keep him safe while he's still learning.
deleted-user·
That will help him learn. With it being covered up it stops him from touching it. If he can do it with your current car seat buying a new one isn't going to fix it. Any CPST I have talked to will suggest the button up shirt thing. I would rather use a button up shirt then have him get hurt.
Andy·
Мама сына (1 год), беременна (4 нед.)
We don't really want to do the button up shirt, we would rather teach him that he is not supposed to do it. That will not help him learn. But I may try it because I really do the wanna spent another 200+ bucks on a car seat
Andy·
Мама сына (1 год), беременна (4 нед.)
The straps are very tight
deleted-user·
Have you tried the button up shirt, OP? Sounds like the best bet at this point. I'd hate for you to buy two new car seats and have him do the same thing.
deleted-user·
Get a button up shirt & button it over the clip.
deleted-user·
make the straps tighter........

I got back in touch with Britax and they said it's not a manufacturers fault and all they. And all they can do is send me another chest clip. She even said he was to young to understand if we keep telling him not to do it. He totally does not understand it at all. We just went out again and he got out of it 4 times before we pulled out of the drive way. So I'm guessing we are going to have to waste money on a new car seat and my MIL in will too because she has the same one. She has barely used hers. Is this not happening to anyone else? My son can't be they only one getting out
Andy·
Мама сына (1 год), беременна (4 нед.)
So it's been 3 weeks and he is still getting out. I called Britax yesterday and the lady just told me if he is in correctly I can't pinch the straps behind the shoulders and make sure straps are at or below shoulders. Umm yeah thanks for telling me what I know already. She said he should not be able to get out of it if he is in the seat properly. He is in the seat properly I can assure all of you that and can even post a picture. This pretty much started when I took the seat insert out. It says to take it out over 22 pounds. So now I'm wondering if I can put it back and will it be safe. It says to take it out at 22 pounds on the car seat itself, but in the manual it dose not say you have to take it out
So I'm confused. I'm gonna have to call again. Do you think they will give me a discount on another seat if we have to get one? It's not even a year old yet
deleted-user·
No aftermarket products are considered safe. I'd call the manufacturer and see if they have any ideas or products they sell for this situation.
Andy·
Мама сына (1 год), беременна (2 нед.)
Would after market chest clips be ok?
deleted-user·
Check with your car seat manufacturers to see if they do something like this. There is a brand here (not sure if they do us version) that sell car seats with these as standard.
5 Point Plus Car Seat Anti Escape System (15-30months) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007FAI2AS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_-ghezbFC09G3G
deleted-user·
I'd buy a short sleeve thin button up shirt (with little buttons) and still put him in it. I'd rather have him be a little hot rather than continue to get out of his seat. Or maybe get one of those portable fans for him as well. Maybe Google your seat along with "kid moving chest clip" to see if it's something common with that seat?
ETA: Your could even cut the sleeves off. It's just for the car.
deleted-user·
Hmmm- this is a scary one. Maybe check around on Amazon? I am constantly surprised by the amount of stuff I have found when faced with a "what do I do about this weird situation?" Maybe really tight barrettes under the buckle portion on each side? Maybe try pulling over and announcing you won't be able to go (wherever it is you're going) if he doesn't stay buckled in? We have had to have a couple Come To Jesus talks with my three year old who thinks it's funny to flip the door handle with his foot while I'm driving. I lock his door just in case!
Andy·
Мама сына (1 год), беременна (2 нед.)
It's funny I was thinking about doing that, but knowing my son he would get them apart and maybe even eat them. He loves taking things apart
deleted-user·
If you take rubber bands or string and tie them on the straps underneath the clip it may prevent him from pushing it down!
Andy·
Мама сына (1 год), беременна (2 нед.)
Ok so he is still getting out of seat. I put the rubber chest padding on the belts and it still does not stop him. The jacket over the belt idea probably will not work because he knows how to unzip. Also I don't want to put to may clothes on him now that summer is coming and my ac does not work as well aymore. So I'm at a loss of what to do. We also keep telling him no dont do that it's not safe.
deleted-user·
Sorry OP. I'm confusing you with another user.
Andy·
Мама сына (1 год), беременна (1 нед.)
I'm not pregnant. And yes I will take a look at this list but we got the car seat sometime last year 2016.
Edit: it's not the Click Tight one
deleted-user·
Hmm. If it was me I would sit next to him and prevent him from doing it for a few days. Then hopefully it would stop it from happening. I know you are pregnant so I don't know if that's comfortable for you now. But I would do that first.
Or maybe give him some toys or something to do on car rides? To keep him busy and not touching the straps.
deleted-user·
Also, what exact seat is it? Make sure it isn't on this recall list. They've had issues in the past with straps coming loose.
http://whnt.com/2015/08/14/britax-recalls-more-than-200000-car-seats-harness-adjuster-may-allow-shoulder-straps-to-loosen/
Andy·
Мама сына (1 год), беременна (1 нед.)
Oh yeah it's on tight for sure. My husband made its pretty tight the last time he got it off again. I was surprised
deleted-user·
My son was doing that too around his age could not get him to stop the clip was just too easy to unlatch. I got him a new car seat and this one he can't undo.
deleted-user·
I definitely scared him but I wouldn't say it was too much. My facial expression and tone was what got the severity across to him. When he calmed down I did more explaing but I needed him to quit immediately so that's why I screamed first.
Eta: You know what your son responds to the best so what worked for me may not work for you. I would try some of the other suggestions first
deleted-user·
Are the straps tight enough? You shouldn't be able to pinch the back of the strap (by the back of the car seat) between your fingers. I have my dd's straps so tight I can't imagine any way she could take her straps down on her own, even moving the chest clip, and she'll be 2 in a few weeks.
deleted-user·
He's kind of little, I'm not sure he'd completely understand why he's being screamed at. I'd try the button up shirt.
Andy·
Мама сына (1 год), беременна (1 нед.)
Wow, thanks guys. You have some good ideas. He is RF. So if my husband yells at him to the point where he is scared about doing it he will stop? Just don't wanna scare him to much lol
deleted-user·
This may be terrible and maybe I'll get judged. But my son did this one time and my husband pulled over and i screamed at him like I've never screamed before. My husband said it was the scariest he's ever seen me. He never touched the seat belt again and it's been about a year.
deleted-user·
If he's FF I'm like 90% sure Britax requires the rubber pieces on his straps.
deleted-user·
I can post a picture if that doesn't make sense. Lol We do it for my son because he gets car sick and that keeps the puke out of the buckels.
deleted-user·
Put a light zip up (or button up if that's harder for him to undo) sweater or shirt on him and zip it (button it) over the chest clip.
deleted-user·
Is he FF or RF?
Andy·
Мама сына (1 год), беременна (1 нед.)
Well today was the worst and only the second day. We told him no dont do that because it's dangerous to have it undone. We say stay in your seat and don't get out. All of a sudden you hear Hi from the back seat, turn around and there he is, sitting to the side and looking at you laughing and smiling. He thinks it's funny. It's scares the crap out of me for sure. I don't like it
deleted-user·
Does he get in trouble when he does it?
deleted-user·
My son started doing that around 18 months and really I just kept pulling over and telling him over and over in a super stern voice that that is a no no ! He hasn't done it in months so I'd say he got the point
