Public transportation stress during pandemic

Anyone feel stressed out taking public transportation since the pandemic? I feel like things have been worse within the last 2 years. The trains are a nightmare to deal with because there are more people who are mentally ill on the trains not getting the help they need. I deal with this all the time now especially on my way to school. Yesterday a guy was screaming non stop and threatening to attack people. He made everyone flinch. I felt like I wanted to cry. It’s draining and stressful to deal with plus I hate the feeling of being trapped on the train with nowhere to go, not knowing what will happen.

Today there was an attack on one of the trains where a man had a smoke bomb and started shooting at people. So far luckily no one was killed but about 16 people were injured. Some of the injuries were people stepping over each other as the chaos unfolded because they couldn’t see where they were running. The perpetrator is still on the loose. It’s horrible. People just want to go to work, school, home or visit family and how can they do that when someone can disrupt their commute? 😩

It is painful to know that this happened so close.
It could have easily been any one of us if we had still lived there in that area. I used to live in ParkSlope and my stop was 25th street station.

Just hits me in my soul. I am mentally trying to process all of it.

@icebergahead, they just caught the guy! 🙌🏻 hopefully they won’t let him out because of the bail reform. I’m crossing my fingers. The mayor has stated not that long ago that there are a lot of loop holes so he’s hoping to eventually have everything fixed where criminals don’t get out of jail easily. This mess was created by the previous mayor and governor where people that did violent crimes would get released when the bail reform was actually supposed to be for people that committed non violent offenses.

@icebergahead, I’m so glad that my classes were canceled today. I didn’t feel like taking the train to the city especially after all of this chaos. I hope that things settle down more and that there will be more police in train stations. I wish that there would be cops in train carts as well but I know it will be almost impossible to have a cop in every train cart.

I don’t live in NYC I’m in CT about 45 mins away but I’m always saying to my friends and SO that I would not feel safe on the subway. I used to go into NYC by myself all the time but wouldn’t go alone now. I read about what happened in BK today and I can’t imagine how those people must have felt 😣. And that lady that was pushed in front of the train…just devastating and senseless act of violence.

@itskarina, I used to deal with some people like that randomly but now it seems to be an every week occurrence. I would usually try to ignore it but now I feel like I get claustrophobic and the trains are bad lately as well with signal problems or delays. I was stuck on a train recently that had a delay for about 20 min with a guy running up and down the train screaming and he threw a glass bottle on the floor. I was expecting him to start hitting someone but I’m glad it didn’t get to that point. I was having anxiety and getting stressed out. 😔 I hate having no control of a situation like that. There should be more cops around.

@bigfatpigswithakingkong, Ugh I’m so sorry. I’m always seeing random videos of people acting up on the subway pop up on tiktok, and people comment “true new yorkers are used to this”. It’s not okay. People shouldn’t have to deal with that.

@itskarina, yeah exactly lol. I was born and raised here and while I try to get used to it I can’t. I never know what to expect.
I used to love taking the train far and going around the city but now I have to be on alert when I go.

I found out that a little while ago that one of my professors I had last semester was on that train attack today. I don’t know yet if she was in the same train cart as the attacker or on a different one but I heard that she is pretty shaken up. I am glad that she is ok.
