Hey guys. It's been a while since I've really posted anything on here. My husband and I are in the middle of a divorce. My 4.5 year old son just got diagnosed with ADHD. He's also been in therapy for about a year. I was just told today that they started him on meds without informing me this. My husband said the teachers recommend him be medicated and so did the doctors, of course the teachers did, it makes their job easier. I was informed months ago medication was an option, but like I said I was just informed today that he has already started. The medication they gave him, it is called Quilivant. So basically Adderall. Did u guys know there is Meth in it?? 🥺It's the generic brand, it's liquid and it's extended release. Why do I feel so horrible about this? He's still my baby and they put him on drugs already. He's not even 5 yet. The side effects scare the crap out of me, Especially the ticks he can get from them. My best friend's son was on meds and had bad symptoms, and has some life long ticks because of it. I'm so worried about him now, not being there at home with him and my other kids. Can anyone give me any advice if you have been through this and what did u do?

I also wanted to add, with adhd kids also deal with impulsive behaviors and aggression. At first I didn’t want my son on medicine because I thought it would really change him. I didn’t understand how difficult it was for him to control everything going on in his brain. It really affected him in all aspects of his life. Especially school. It’s not about making the teachers job easier, it’s about giving your child the resources to succeed in the classroom setting. I do a combination of in home therapy, out patient therapy, case management and medicine for my son. He needs all resources available to him to help him succeed and to help him in his daily life.

Totally agreed. As a kid it was so hard for me to focus in school and by middle school I became withdrawn. In high school I became impulsive and started failing classes. Being medicated would have changed my life drastically. Children that have ADHD are at greater risk to suffer from depression and/or anxiety among other things.

depression is one of the side affects, and serious depression if he ever goes off the meds ☹️🥺

the depression side affect usually happens if you're abusing it. And I said risk. Medication effects everyone differently. ADHD is typically comorbid which means that it usually coexist with other disorders, depression being one of them

Just like previous posters said. It makes a difference educating yourself about the drug. If he truly has ADHD then the benefits of the drug along with therapy will certainly help him in the long run. The slow release is a better option for him because it doesn't have as many as many withdrawal affects. I'm actually on adderall xr as an adult. I wasn't diagnosed until recently and I wish my parents and teachers would have stepped up and treated me. My childhood would have been very different.
As far as the legalities of this. Does your ex have sole custody or is it shared. In my court order my ex husband and I have shared responsibility (aka custody) but if we disagree then I have final say.
I will say if the doctors, teachers, and your ex agree he needs to be medicated it will be an uphill battle for you to get him off of it.

aww girl, that makes me sad that you had to battle that for so long without the help that should have been given to you. I’m happy you are now able to have the help.

@dontblockmesis-imjustspeakingfacts no worries 😊. I function so much better. I trump it up to many factors that were not in my favor...it was the 90s before the ADHD became something to diagnose, I'm African American (children of African American parents are less likely to be diagnosed with a mental health disorder and I'm female (teachers are trained to look for the symptoms in males, the symptoms for females are much different) ... ADD definitely explains so much of my personality when I was a child, but I happy and thriving now that I'm on medication.

Divorce process just started, there is nothing in writing yet. So I should be told of everything that is going on with my children regardless. They are my children too. This is just so upsetting I was not told they made a decision.
Mandy··
that's such a gray area because there's nothing legally binding that forces him to tell you. ask your lawyer maybe

I will this week. He uses my kids against me as a weapon. He says why should I have to know anything about them if I'm not helping pay for them. Ummm because I love them and they are my children too and because I left his drunk ass and came to live with my friend because I had to get away from him and I don't start my new full time job next week and I still need to get off my feet and if he wants child support I'm more then happy to do it and agree to it in court. I was a stay at home mom for almost two years.

sounds complicated.
