In need of breastfeeding advice/encouragement. Babe is currently 3 days old, but he doesn’t feed every 2-3 hours like they say you’re “supposed”. It makes me feel bad, and I will try to feed him but I seem to only make him mad and we’re battling a shallow latch with him) He’s pooping and peeing great. His poo has already transitioned to a brown color. Part of me feels like I shouldn’t worry about the frequency of his feelings, but that he’s getting enough each feed. Am I doing something wrong?

Ok, first, GOOD JOB RECOGNIZING HIS FEEDING CUES ❤️ don’t let the mom guilt set in. Breastfeeding is a LEARNED experience. It takes practice for both mom and baby but the good thing is it does happen and you will get it 😊

If you’re still in the hospital, request a LC and have him/her come in to work with you on the latch. If the boppy isn’t working for you, remove it and find a position that’s comfortable for you and baby.

Baby tummy is the size of a walnut right now meaning so he doesn’t need much but what the colostrum is providing. Babies are born with a lot of nutrients to make up for the first week of mom getting latching together so don’t worry that baby will starve.

Let him feed as long as whenever he wants. Unswaddle him and let him just lay on your chest(skin to skin). The rooting reflex will help him find the boob and you can gently guide him.

The cradle hold works the best for me. Make sure you are guiding your nipple in his mouth the right way using either the “C” hold or “U” hold. I can send you examples if you like?

Don’t let baby sleep pass 3hrs 😊 message me for any questions if you want and definitely keep seeing a LC until you leave the hospital and even after that

The doctors are wrong when they tell you to feed only every 3hrs. Baby needs to feed on demand but definitely wake baby if baby is sleeping past 2-3hrs to feed especially if you’ve had an epidural, any drugs or difficult birth.

Did your milk come in yet? How often is he feeding? How long? If baby latch is off, try feeding in the football hold. Feel free to message me!

No my milk hasn’t come in yet. I had an epidural, but everything was fine. My nurses said I was producing a lot of colostrum for a first time mom. Some feedings he’ll latch in a few tries and feed for a good 45 minutes.. but earlier he was laying across my chest with the boppy and I noticed he was nuzzling into my chest, so I whipped it out and he shallow latched and I pulled him off to reattempt but he just got mad and rooted around while my boob was literally in his mouth waiting for him to clamp down. Then he so tired from that that he passes out for another couple hours. The next time he wakes up its been 5-6 hours since his last good feed. The mom guilt it real right now. I have tried football hold and the regular one.

I had to undress mine and do skin to skin. At the checkup he lost almost a pound. So I had to wake him up to feed. I was doing 2 hours during the day, and 3 at night.
