I wanna get my son a fish tank a small one but what kind of fish should i put in it and what breeds and types go…

@elijahsmom yeah theyre a lot of work. And the setup is pricey. I spent nearly $250 on the 10 gallon tank setup and way more on the larger one

@chadandtanya14 ive had goldfish throughout the years. Both the fancy ones and feeders. Weve had them in 10-20 gallon tanks and they required a lot of cleaning and water maintenance to keep them healthy. I wont be going the goldfish route again. My personal favorite are cichlids. Theyre insanely awesome. They need the works for the tank to run smoothly but theyre sick!! Ive fed them raw frozen ground beef and they swarmed like piranhas, they used to chase my finger and each other. All day you can hear them blooping out of the water chasing each other. Ill get another setup of those someday

Do not do gold fish, they are the messiest fish out there. I would do a Betta tank or a fresh water tank. You will neat a filter and heater for both. Rule of thumb is one inch of fish per gallon. I have a 10 gallon fresh water. It's pretty easy to take care of. If you do fresh water you will need a bottom feeder and an algae eater to help keep tank clean along with other fish of your liking. Just make sure you go to a good place with knowledgeable people so they don't mix community fish with aggressive fish or don't give you fish that get to big

@vvrobinson ya. My gold fish didn't die and still 2 years later are alive in my girl friends tank with her 2 gold fish she had before mine joined

@chadandtanya14 yes ive seen those too. But one healthy happy fish is better than buying a huge set up with many fish that require more upkeep and will cost more in the long run. Its a tank for a kid for petes sake. Betta is a good start. Im so sick of hearing goldfish are an easy fish. No way!!! The ammonia they release, the filth they make... they die so easily and need so much work. A betta is the easiest way to go

@vvrobinson yes beta fish are easiest for sure but u can only put 1 in a tank. They actually have beta tanks that is separated and hold 2 beta fish

A small fish tank wont hold many fish, they will die off. Best fish for kids that is low maintenance and can live in a small tank is a betta. Goldfish require plenty of maintenance because they release ammonia into the water that kills them. Also they grow very large, even the feeders and youll need a filter for sure because they're fucking dirty fish. What weve found that works best for our toddler is a single betta in a 1.5-2 gallon tank. We bought a set at petco so the tank has a filter and light that came with it. We also bought a heater because we bought a baby betta that needs warmer water and he has bubbler that we had in a bigger tank years ago

There's so many types of gold fish that go well together. Ones with big bubbly eyes that are so neat and come in different colors. Easiest fish to please and put together. But.....the fish tank itself is a heck of alot of work. The smaller the tank the more work as weird as that seems. I got my son one for Christmas and the amount of cleaning it needs is just ridiculous so needless to say it's been sitting empty for 2 years in a closet
