Sleep Training !

So I went ahead and hired the sleep consultant. I was at a loss with how poor Davis's sleep was, and because I was suffering from PPD, the sleep deprivation was making me not be able to cope with daily life. Davis had no idea how to put himself to sleep whatsoever.. I would nurse him to sleep and then rock him and then carefully put him down in his crib fast asleep. If he woke up when I put him down I would have to repeat the process.. Sometimes it took 2 hours to get him back to sleep. On top of that he is such a light sleeper so ANY tiny sound would wake him up and because the only way he knew how to sleep was to be nursed or rocked then that's what he would expect. We tried bed sharing and his sleep and mine was even worse.. I just didn't know what to do anymore. I went to a seminar on baby and toddler sleep and I decided to take the leap and the cost ($480) to hire the sleep consultant. The first night and day was so so hard.. He cried a lot and because it's not the CIO method, I was there beside him the whole time patting his back and rubbing his belly, giving him kisses and picking him up for some cuddles (which I think made it worse). After that first awful night and day.. He has already begun to sleep through the night and nap for 1.5 hours + during the day.. He actually has gone down for naps now without crying and falling asleep in under 10 minutes. He slept 11 hours the past two nights in a row.. I honestly can't believe the difference especially in him ! He has been so happy, calm and not fussy like he was before throughout the day. I'm still not sleeping as well because I'm constantly staring at the monitor but I'm hoping in time I'll feel more comfortable with him in his crib and on his tummy (I hate it so much).

Try waiting the 15 minutes before going in to get him. It might work for ya !

That's the thing. My son falls asleep on his own for both night and naps and I follow a schedule. I put him down completely awake. He wakes at exactly 45 minutes and every night at 11, 2, and 5. It's like he has a clock set!

@mrskiddish. She makes me set a timer on my phone and wait 15 minutes before going into the room. She said that most babies, If they're going to fall back asleep it would be within 15 minutes. How does your LO sleep at night ? Do they fall asleep on their own? Because babies sleep cycles are 45 minutes, If they can't self soothe then they can't transition into the next sleep cycle. Davis was like that prior to this

@toughlove I bought the angel care monitor for the pad but my LO moves so much I don't know if it would work for him.. I ended up spending the money on the owlet monitor

@safiyah yes it's done for both naps and bedtime. It has to be consistent for him to learn to fall asleep on his own. for bedtime you actually stay in the room until he falls asleep. You start by sitting beside the crib and every minute or so giving them some back rubs and talking and if they're inconsolable you can pick them up and give them a cuddle, but they have to be put back in awake

Ok I have to ask. What does she say to do when he wakes too early from nap? I have a chronic 45 minute napper on my hands

I have the angle care monitor with camera on it , the quality of video sucks but that pad under his mattress keeps me sane! The first few nights i watched it like a hawk now i sleep just as sound as he does!

@beth. It starts with a consistent routine for both nap and bedtime that you complete every time the same (e.g., for bedtime you could do bath, Pajamas, sleep sack, bottle/nursing, song, book and into bed awake). Yes I put him to bed between 6-7pm every night and when he wakes up from his nap I put him down 1.5 hours later. I follow a wake-eat-play-sleep routine now

You will get used to him sleeping on his stomach. My daughter has been sleeping on her stomach for 2 months now and i love it! I had to start putting her on her stomach because she was more comfortable that way and I desperately need sleep. She started waking only once the first night.

So you basically just put him in his crib when you want him to sleep and pat/soothe him until he falls asleep? Is he on a napping schedule now?

@nicole my LO did this a couple of times too so that's what really freaked me out lol. You're right you can't really control it so I'm trying to just let it happen lol

@shawnaway oh no I didn't think you were being negative ! Yes my Grandma has even said the same thing about them being on their tummies. I have support from her for 2 weeks !

Once they start rolling over onto their belly there isn't much you can do.

When my son stated doing this, I didn't sleep much the first two nights because I kept checking him.

I was also told once they start rolling over in their sleep, they can easily turn their head.

My son however put his face right into the mattress so I would have to turn his head

That's really cool!

And also I wasn't trying to be negative about the sleeping on belly thing. My nephew is 7 and when he was born they told us to put him on his belly. Times have changed! Also every baby is different an if they don't want to do something then they clearly have more patience than us to hold out haha!!

How long will you keep in touch with the consultant?

@shawnaway yes it's recommended they sleep on their backs but he immediately flips over to his tummy (I always put him down on his back). At first I was flipping him back over every 5-10 minutes but he would freak out and immediately roll back to his tummy.. It's something I can't really control unless I prevent him from rolling by putting something in the crib, but that's also not recommended. I hope I can get comfortable with the idea of him sleeping on his tummy. I've even considered buying the owlet monitor or an angel care monitor. The sleep consultant just gives you the tools to be successful. She writes you a sleep plan based on your baby's health/ weight / sleeping patterns and you follow the sleep plan. I track everything (routines/ feedings / play time / nap / awake / bedtime) and send it to her daily and she gives me feedback. We also have 4 phone calls throughout the week to talk about everything. She only does what you're comfortable with. My initial appointment was a 1.5 hour Skye session with her. You can do in person but it costs more money.

That's great mama!! You'll get used to it and this will be the new norm soon so rest is on the way!!

I'm a little curious about the sleeping on belly thing, I get its more comfortable/soothing I guess, but isn't the back the "safest"?

Is the belly just more soothing or keeps their attention from wondering off and staying awake?

Also how did it work? Does someone come in every night and help put him down? Does she just coach you or does she show you how first?

Sorry for all the questions, this really intrigues me!
