Maternity leave and insurance payment

How will you pay for your insurance while on maternity leave? I have AFLAC which will be sending a check directly to me, but my concern is my continuation of benefits. I am the first person to get pregnant where i work, and they don't know the policy. They are telling me I am going to have to pay $500/mo for health insurance when I typically pay $55. According to them, while I'm not on the payroll, I don't get the employee group discount. That does not seem right....and according to my research online, I should pay the same amount. Can any of y'all help me with your experience?

Thanks y'all!! I knew it wasn't right and everybody in that department is new so they are no help. I went straight to our insurance rep and she referred me to our HR person, which isn't really an HR rep. She is our newest account payable rep that took on insurance responsibly when our HR person left. I asked my CFO to make sure their information was correct and sent them a link to the Department of Labor, showing they were responsible to pay for their normal contribution. She later replied that they would pay their normal contributions. They want me to leave them blank checks which is a little scary. They are also making me use my 2 weeks of vacation before I even use FMLA. sucks, but it's better than paying $550/mo.

You should only have to pay what you regularly pay out of each paycheck. My insurance is covered by my job but I do have to send a check for the dental and for them to continue to pay aflac.

You might have a representative in the insurance company that can help if your work is new at this.

Doesn't sound right to me either! I just had a baby last January and although I still had to pay insurance while on leave it was the discounted price. When I returned back they set me up on a re-payment plan.

If you are in the US, legally they have to cover your insurance as it is currently covered (if the company has more than 50 employees) for 12 weeks. So you'd have to pay whatever you normally pay out of your paycheck, nothing more... assuming you qualify for FMLA- meaning you've worked full time there for at least a year. If you don't qualify then they don't have to cover your insurance or even hold your position.

Defiantly doesn't sound right. You should contact your HR department and who ever your disability will be paid through to identify how much you have to pay per pay period while on leave. You shouldn't have to pay $500 and technically you are still an employee.

That doesn't sound right. With my job the company pays the benefits while I'm on leave and once I return to work they deduct what they've paid from my check (this is being there less than a year). If you've been there a year you then are eligible for short term disability payments in which they just deduct whatever you would normally pay straight from the payments.

That doesn't sound right. I'm on temporary disability for maternity leave but I'm still an "active" employee. None of my work benefits are effected because I'm still employed.
