Locking your doors
We are having a discussion on one of my birth boards from my older kids about locking doors and security alarms. There are many of us (me included) who do not lock our doors at home (I actually don't even have a deadbolt on my house and we don't lock it when we leave either), and others who think that's totally weird. So what do you do? Do you lock your doors? Do you think it's weird that people don't?
I lock mine when I am sleeping, or going to be gone for a day or more for piece of mind. But if I am just running errands, or whatnot, my front door is usually unlocked. If i am home, my door is unlocked. My car is unlocked 90% of the time, usually with the keys still in it and the windows rolled down. My neighborhood is pretty safe, and we have really nosy old neighbors who look out for each other. We live in a US town.
My friend has 4 dogs, one of which is my very well trained 85lb Doberman. Someone kicked in her back door and took a tv about 2 weeks after I gave him to her. He was sleeping in a separate building but jumped through a 9ft high window and bit whoever it was. Initial snap then the techs said sunk in every last tooth for a full contact bite and they were very impressed. None of the other dogs even woke up though and she's so thankful I let her have him because she's scared what would have happened had he not been there. I always lock my doors. Just too crazy out there these days.
I lock at all times. There are way too many crazy people out there. You hear horror stories of child abductions, home invasions etc. I could never forgive myself if my family were hurt because I didn't lock the doors. Ps when you hear these random stories people always say "we never thought that would happen here"
we lock it at night and if we will be gone for more than an hour. we have dogs and the 90lb one does not Like strangers. growing up my parents never locked the house, we didn't even keep house keys on us unless we were out of town. it just depends on where you live and what your comfortable with.
I grew up I'm NYC... and we never used to lock our door when I was little. always lived in pretty safe areas, I guess... but times have changed now, and now I definitely lock it. but you need get through a security gate and a downstairs door before you Vann even get into my building. and there's about 100 apartments so I don't think it's a big deal to leave it open every once in a while if I need to
I grew up mostly on my grandparents' farm and we never ever locked our doors. Now town encroaches on rural land, so the doors are locked. Makes me sad. We live in a metropolitan area near mass transit lines and have some nefarious individuals for neighbors, so we always lock up, home or away.
I lock my doors and my windows. I think people who don't live in a fairy tale land. Yeah ok you live in a small town where nothing happens but anything could. Sometimes I think I'm crazy for sitting in my living room with my door open knowing my storm door doesn't lock. People are crazy out here the world is crazy. If locks were not meant to be used they wouldn't be on things.
I always lock our doors. We live in a safe neighborhood, but I worry about the "what ifs". I know there was a really nice and expensive neighborhood in town that got targeted because so many people left their doors unlocked, cars unlocked and garage doors open. There was something like 15 robberies in one night.
I used to always have mine unlocked as well.. even when we left. But with all the stuff going on lately.. I even leave them locked during the day unless my Dh is home or we're outside. My worst fear is someone taking my kids. But I also have a gun. Mine is a protective measure I guess. Its gotten worse with this pregnancy
Me to PP about First 48 & all the crime shows hehe also, crime is considered low in my area when it comes to rape & murder..but being in a rural area, meth & prescription drug addiction isnt low so therefor robberies are constant around here so thats my main concern. Ya still never know though! What pisses me off is that if someone grabs you & you KNOW they have bad intentions..you technically cant do s*** til theyre already in the process..so i have to already be being raped before i can defend myself..which would make it more impossible. I learned this when i got stopped walking at night & they searched me (since lots of drugs\robberies in area) & they questioned why i had a knife..i said too bad, im small & my only shot is gonna be my first one! Lol
I am big on locking doors..but like my gma says "if someone wants in, theyre getting in..you can lock all the doors & theyll break a window" but my argument is it atleast makes it harder & there will be a noise..i also keep a knife on me all the time. I guess im paranoid! Atleast i can stab a mofo if needed lol
I cannot sleep in peace without checking to see if the door are lock. I sometimes do it twice. I even grab the door to make sure it's shut all the way. I don't trust people. I also make sure the Windows are locked too.
You think your neighborhood is safe until a predator moves in, or The Anderson's out of control nephew come to visit and all of a sudden there are break ins happening . U never know what can change in your neighborhood and make it unsafe. I mean what will it hurt locking your doors? Better safe than sorry I always say! I'm sure people who been victims of home invasions or murders from some one entering their home had no idea it was going to happen.
I have three locks on my front and back door. I don't even live in a bad neighborhood and those doors are always locked. If my big front door is open then the glass door is locked. I don't want anybody coming in my house without my knowledge since I'm alone most of the time with my two small children (SAHM) homie don't play that.
And yes, I think it's weird when people don't lock their doors. My sisters boyfriend literally never locks his doors...all night they are unlocked. Creeps me the fück out!!! Lock yo s*** t!!
I have my doors locked at all times. When I lived with my parents, we didn't lock our doors. We lived in an upper class neighborhood with virtually no crime. Then one day our house got broken into. They stole everything of value, and they beat our dog. Now the doors always get locked.
Uhh, yeah mine stay locked even when I'm home.
It doesn't matter where you live, some dumbass can still walk up into you're house at any given time. Even if cops live in your neighborhood.
We used to never lock our house when I was growing up cause we lived in a safe neighborhood where we watch each others houses, then someone broke into mine and my moms car and tried stealing my grandmothers. That hit too close to home. If they'll do that they'll do anything.
I never used to lock my door I would leave my car keys in my ignition but that was when we lived in the country middle of no where now that we live I. The city I lock everything the deck door has two locks then the door to go in the house has two locks car is always locked we don't live in a bad area but its not the country lol
In the house I grew up in we never locked the door and it's still not locked. I don't even have a house key to my parents home lol. My friends and family who lived in the same neighborhood didn't lock theirs either. We also just walked in each other houses if we went to visit someone without knocking lol.
I lived in the city of Detroit for 5 years so had to and got used to locking my doors but I always hated it. I felt like it was an extra step that you shouldn't have to do to get in or out of your house.
I recently moved to a nice city and have been keeping my doors unlocked besides at night.
So no I don't think it's weird that you don't lock your door but I also think it depends on where you live. In some areas you need to lock your doors.
This bothers me. Especially because I know alot about criminality. My doors are ALWAYS locked. Let's not even touch the obvious thievery risks.
OP and those that do not lock your doors: have you gone on your local sex offender registry? In my area the numbers are frightening... That might make you rethink locking your doors.
I think it depends on where you live. I live in a small town, it's technically considered a village lol, there's only about 200 people here. Our side door doesn't even have a lock on it and we never lock our front or back door. I just don't feel the need to.
Besides, they would have to be brave enough to get past our dogs, a Rottweiler mix, Pitbull mix, and the meanest one, our chihuahua lol.
Canadians dont lock their doors. Are you in Canada? That filmmaker guy Michael (forgot last name) made a movie about how dangerous America is even though we have less guns then Canada which is a hunting country. He was talking about how paranoid Americans were in Canada when he just starting walking to randoms houses to see if people doors were locked & they werent. Total shocker for me! Im from New Orleans. We lock doors round here!
We live in a very small town and almost never lock our doors. We have a good sized dogs who barks if people come too close to the house and are armed and ready with guns. :) in the last 30 years there has been one murder and I have not heard of anybody having their home broken into. Of course this all could happen anywhere anytime.
I never lock mine during the day even if I leave, but that's only because my neighbors will walk up to someone they don't know and ask them what the heck they're doing if they're walking around someones house, and always tell me if anyone came by while I was gone. My neighborhood watches out for each other so I feel safe enough to not have to. I do lock them at night though, just because I know none of my neighbors are going to be up at 2 a.m. to question someone lol.
We live in a small town where my nextdoor neighboor leaves her windows and door open during the summer.. as for me I grew up in a big city where leaving your door unlocked or open is just a invite to criminals.. im too safety conscious when it comes to stuff like that! Id rather be safe than sorry! Iv seen way too many crime shows and I would rather not end up being a nightly news special.. for me its door locked when home, windows shut at night, and when we buy a house im def getting a secuirity alarm!
We don't lock ours either. We live on a ranch where you have to drive a ways off the road to even get to our house. If we go on vacation or something then we lock the doors if we remember. But honestly a locked door won't keep people out of your house who are determined to come in. We have two cow dogs who stay outside and our two labs sleep in the hall way to the kids rooms upstairs. There are guns in several rooms of our house as well. We have just never felt the need to lock our doors.
I couldn't even tell you what key goes to our house on my key chain. Right now ds and I live with my mom on a dead end dirt road that no on ever comes down. If EVERYONE leaves the house (which is almost never because there's so many people who live in the house), then the door gets locked. When ds and I move to be with dh next month I'll have all the doors locked and possibly move furniture in front of the door. I'm really paranoid. The only reason it doesn't bother me here is because our house is so remote and we've lived here so long.
I have heard and seen far too many bad things happen to unsuspecting people because they didn't lock their doors. But I also think as long as you don't ever tell anyone that your house is unlocked while your gone you'll be fine. You can control the people you allow in your house, and who you let know its unlocked. But you never know who the people you told its unlocked to hands out with and may know. Lets say you left something in your house for your aunt to pick up, and lets say she brings your cousin with when she runs in to grab it. Then your cousin knows its unlocked while your gone and who knows who that might hang out with or might accidents say something to? The people that break into unlocked houses aren't always going to be the people you told the house was unlocked. They usually find out in passing. I don't feel secure in my house and out of my house unless I know that all doors are locked.
When I lived in San Diego we never locked our doors, we would leave the door open all night..there was just a sense of safety in that area. This was the same when I lived in Arizona, we never locked our doors, rarely even shut them. Now I live in Washington and our doors are locked 100% of the time, including car doors. We even had to get locks for our gas caps lmao
I always lock my doors and windows. It's a safety thing. If there's an intruder, I'd rather hear him/her trying to break in so I can take appropriate action than having the door already unlocked for them to waltz right in. Im originally from a city, so locking doors are normal and a must.
Also, SO works at night and it wouldn't be a safe move for me and my lo to leave doors unlocked. Even when I take my dog out to tickle I lock my door, I've heard too many stories on the news where a woman is raped or attacked because a man snuck into her apartment or home because her door was unlocked.
I lock mine at night or if we go on vacation. I grew up my parents never locked our doors my keys are always in the ignition when my truck is in my driveway. I only lock them at night so none of my kiddos escape. we live on a huge property where my neighbors are my parents and my grandparents spread over 100 acres. I have large dogs so if you get past them more power to you.
I can leave my front door open (with the screen door closed of course) all night if I wanted to because the area in which I live is pretty quiet. I also got a nice sized PitBull terrior (a crazy b**** ) named Karma that guards my house so anyone who would wanna come in uninvited will think twice about coming in. However, I do lock all of my doors at night but the back door so Karma can come in and go out to use the bathroom as needed while we sleep...and almost everyone in my house sleeps like the dead and I dont want wanna wake up dead one day LOL
I ALWAYS lock my doors. Even during the day. Too many weirdos out there. I live in a nice neighborhood with my neighbors being a police office, a firemen, df's grandparents and another family with a baby. I just know that it's possible for something to happen so fast and you could've avoided it by a locked door. I do think its a little weird to not lock your door, but if you feel safe, good for you. I'm home alone with a baby and don't want anyone "stopping by"
I only lock my doors when we go on vacation or at night... I never lock my car doors either unless it's night and I need to see and it's just a quick lock/unlock (my headlights and mirror lights come on when you unlock my car)... ohhh and I also do not usually wear a seatbelt to just drive up the street! Now I do lock my car whenevr I go anywhere else though!
Our doors are 100% locked at all times. That way if some one is trying to get in ill hear them and they will no longer be trying to get in. I think that people who don't lock their doors are just asking for people to come on in. I've been to many calls where someone stole all their stuff and their doors weren't locked. It's not if but when even in a "safe" neighborhood/town. But that's my personal opinion/observation.
I'm sorry but that is just not smart not locking your doors. You may live in a rural area where you feel safe and know everyone but all it takes is one time for something to happen. Do you not wear a seat belt to just drive a block down the street? It's the same principle. You may think oh it's only a block I won't get in an accident but all it takes is one time. I would never risk my family's well being. Please consider locking you're doors.
