what are your thoughts?!
My 16 mo old is 19 pounds 2 oz and i keep stressing that he runs around all day and eats alot but they send us 2 in a half hours away to children's hospital of Philadelphia to b examined by a team of gastroenterologists. Like i feel that every kid grows differently and he has a fast metabolism. Hes all clear for all kinds of tests they ran on him nothing is wrong internally. Like its annoying to me that they are just prying where there's nothing wrong at all. I've cooperated this far (it's been 5 months of going up there each month) but im ast my wits end. Im yo the point now where hes not on formula but hes on pedialite 3 times a day and water is the only other liquid he has. Idl guys what do u think?!???????
Thank u soooomuch @sofie thats EXACTLY why im so frustrated lol. The whole theyre Drs comments is a load of bs becasue dr are pp and ppl make mistakes like a pp said and drs can have bad days and overlook something and all kinds of stuff
You are his mama! I would trust your instinct! Yes they are doctors but imo you would know if there was something wrong with your baby! I know I would and I would be persistent in finding out what it was if I thought there was something wrong. Both my kids are small, my 4yr old maybe weighs 26lbs my 2 yr old weighs 22lbs. Always have been on the small side. No one's ever expressed any concern. If labs and test came back fine I would express to them that it's a lot for you to come there and unless they find something wrong or if you feel something is not right you will schedule an appt.
My 6 1/2 year old only weighs 37 pounds. She is perfectly healthy, strong, fast and active,
just tiny. Out doctor suggested a dietitian at one point, but we never followed through. I studied nutrition and child development and knew that they would tell me exactly what I was doing already. I’m not saying don’t go to your appointments but sometimes you go with your gut.
Lol @ you signed up for it when you became a mom...
My daughter is tall and skinny. Always 90+ percentile for height...but for weight very low...can't remember exact percentile...maybe 5? Thank god my doctor would always reaassure me that she was okay and she might just take after her dad (which she does)...she's turning 2 next month and she's only about 22/23 pounds the last time I checked... She's always been a snacker, does not eat much at a time. Pediasure, and all the other foods and "potions" (lol) that a lot of moms suggested for me to try to "fatten" her up never worked. It really sucked because I was a ftm and kept thinking something was wrong when people kept giving me this kind of advice or remedies. But nothing worked, because NOTHING was, nor is, wrong with her. Now when people give me tips for her to gain weight, I just tell them she is just built like that.
My son is 2 months and about 16 pounds possibly more. Will probably outweigh her soon lol.
@2sweetie he eats pork chicken beef rice potatoes fish cheese greek yogurt fruits and veggies avacadoes guacamole like literlly has a good diet. Idk what im doing wrong or if im doing anythin wrong all
My 23 month old ds barely weighs 22lbs. At his 12 month appointment he weighed 16lbs, his pedi sent him to get a blood panel done. Everything came back normal, so she just adjusted his chart, to go with his own rate. Hopefully your doctor's will just accept that he is going to be little and let y'all be!
I definitely know the struggle of a skinny kid, OP. Keep doing the best you can. I’ve found the more active they are harder it’s been to get them to gain. My four year old and two year old are basically the same weight right now, or the last I checked. Lol. So I’ll be thrilled if both have gained more.
In the end if nothing is medically found wrong it’ll be documented, hopefully, just like if something being found would be documented. So if it’s ever a concern (if a new doctor as example) they can read the file. My two year old has Mongolian spots and it’s in her file. Don’t need people thinking my child is covered in bruises lol
Parent life can be so frustrating and stressful.
@c.r.a thank u so much that means alot!
Oh i know serena's advice was well said and so were your thanks alot brunch! Im frustrated. But i know its best for my son to be carefully looked at
@diamond yes!!! I mean it totally pisses me off cuz if he was overweight then it would be a problem there too so idk why ppl cant leave well enough alone when hes passing all tests and weve been complying with everything theyve said thus far
They may be trying to check every single thing out. If he’s being marked as failure to thrive they want to see what the cause is. Could it be something with his thyroid?
My oldest is almost four and has always been in the 5%-10% for weight. She was skinny at birth and still is. She’s never been marked as failure to thrive, but her paediatrician did express concern. She is slow to gain, but does gain weight.
I definitely understand your frustration. As hard as it may be, definitely be thankful they are wanting to make sure nothing is wrong. In the end they may rule everything out.
I hope you get some kind of answer soon or that it’ll all be resolved soon. It’s definitely frustrating to have to deal with all of this constantly. Do your best.
Serena said it very well. This is motherhood. My oldest has always been very, very underweight. He has an abnormally fast metabolism that makes it hard for his body to absorb all of the nutrients and fat that he needs. We've been through all the doctor's appointments, hospital visits and high calorie supplements. He's 6 now but if you saw him, you'd think he was 4. Being underweight is actually a big deal, being malnourished (not bc we're not feeding him properly but bc of his metabolism) is a big deal. The doctor's aren't trying to drive you crazy or make you go to unnecessary appointments. They're trying to make sure your child is healthy. I know it's frustrating op, but please don't shrug off their advice. Extra medical monitoring won't hurt him and they may catch something that needs to be corrected.
@babynumberfour theyve been sending us back n fourth since august! Like im all for trying to find out if something is wrong but idt there is.
Well Pediasure isn't much better in my opinion. It's full of sugar and doesn't have any "real food" in it. Plus if he knows he can get full from a drink, he's not gonna want to eat a meal, since that requires a lot more effort and time. You'd probably want to focus more on his diet and increase his fat intake. And offer the food before the bottle.
My daughter has always been skinny so we try to include as much avocado, yogurt, cheese, and protein into her diet. I don't give her cow's milk or any liquid meal substitute like PediaSure because I don't want her to depend on it to fill up.
What kinds of foods does he eat now?
I even asked the dr abt steriods and why a child would get them to make them gain weight and she said he doesnt need em becasue theres nothing else wrong and usually kids that have to get sterioids usually have a underlying health problem. So she quickly dismissed that idea since he passed all blood tests.
I hate that doctors want to see huge babies and always want to be concerned with smaller babies. If your child has passed all of the necessary test, at what point will they say he’s just small? There are kids with faster metabolisms and doesn’t gain a lot of weight. I’m sick of people comparing their big babies to small babies. Every baby grow at their own pace.
@hides he was 7 pounds 14 oz at birth. Yeah hes skinny but he gets protein from chicken fish pork and greek yogurt and things like that he also loves fruits and veggies and all other kinds of things. They did a full blood panel already and examined his poop. Nothing came back at all. So im stumped
Theyve been told me hes disagnosed as failure to thrive but could it be anything else?
@soppsa no he doesnt drink whole milk at all the doctors told me to skip that step and go straight to pedisure 3x a day
How much did he weigh at birth? Although all children grow differently they do need tobe compared with themselves to see if there isn't an issue. Endocrine issues can be difficult to diagnose and can have a huge impact on future development. By 1 year they should have trebled their birth weight.
Personally your son sounds tiny to me as my son was always at the other end of the scale and weighed 19lb by the time he was 6 months old. That's why you need to compare with birth weight.
@bmr they sent us to a nutritionist last month and weve been doing everything u just said since last visit.
I understand it's frustrating.. but u only have to see from a dumbo in gp why drs are on the ball when it comes to a child's weight. I think they are covering everythin.. they have ur child's best interests at heart just remember that.. u would soon be concerned if drs didn't give a damn.
It does seem like a low weight for his age and they just want to make sure everythin is ok.
Just wanted to add they will do a full blood panel if it wasn’t done at your docs yet to rule out any vitamin deficiencies. As long as baby looks healthy and they take all these steps to rule out neglect it will be a quick and easy visit. I totally get it though it’s so frustratingi have 4 going on 5 kids so to drag them all out for what seems like nothing is draining but like I said if it saves even 1 child who is being neglected and not fed it’s worth it in the end
Does he drink whole milk? Maybe try changing up the foods you offer. My kids have always been on the top end of the chart, my son is 5 months and weighs 21lbs ? my daughter is a picky eater sometimes she’ll eat the same things every day for 3-4 days. I also have a shelf (the lowest one) with all kinds of prepped fruits/veggies/yogurt/etc so they have some control and can choose what they want to eat. Sometimes I chase them around feeding them. I agree each child is unique, and so are their eating habits. Brain development can suffer without enough calories and fat, but it sounds like your baby is meeting the milestones. Another thing I do is keep snack containers if Cheerios or goldfish out. When they go for that container I know they’re hungry and make them something more nutritious
They did this to me as well but my daughter was 19lbs at 2 1/2 years old. All the gastrointestinal doc is gonna do is ask if they eat a balanced diet, what kind of milk they drink and how active they are. Offer you a nutritionalist if wanted and send you home. I actually had to do it with 3 of my girls. While frustrating it’s to help ween out any possible neglect (which I’m sure isn’t the case here) but if it saves just one child by setting these standards and procedures to me it’s worth it. My girls have always been small in the 2%-10% they are just super short. Maybe try to make it a day trip see if there’s anywhere fun to go around the area where you normally wouldn’t bc of the drive
I don’t know but i think it’s fine for you to feel
Over it. Doctors are humans and humans make mistakes. I think it’s good that they’ve done their due diligence but perhaps ask them at what point to they stop and conclude he’s just little? Or what else they really think is wrong?
I’m not a nutritionist but I would recommend adding some healthy fats to his diet! Coconut oil, avocados, nut butters, etc and see if that doesn’t help. You can mix in a fruit smoothie :)
Im just curious i guess as to what the diagnosis would be since hes passed all his blood and fectal testing and he all there developmentally
I understand it takes time and this isnt my first kid but thanks for ur input i appreciate it ?
I understand you're tired but this is what being a mom is. You signed up for this when you became a mom. It takes money, time, and resources at each and every single appointment. If they feel like he didn't need it they wouldn't be sending him. It's precautionary in case something is wrong. They could be monitoring him at each appointment and recording his progress or lack of progress. Some things take time and trial and error to diagnose.
Like they're saying that he's malnourished because he's off of the chart of what a"normal" child his age should be but to me there is no normal child out there every child grows at a different rate every child has different genetics every child is not going to be like the last child.
@2sweetie I'm sorry I meant PediaSure and he takes three bottles of those a day sometimes 3 and 1/2 he eats in between drinks water he literally runs around all day playing and climbing on things developmentally he's all there hitting all of his milestones he's just a slow Gainer and sometimes it's hard to get him to eat he's sometimes just not in the mood
@sereana I know their doctors I understand what you're saying but doctors can also be wrong I've been Cooperative like I said but there's a huge part of me thinking that this is just the way my kid is eats but he is picky he just has a fast metabolism they friend every test possible and there's absolutely nothing wrong with him he's passed every single test
Wait so are they saying he's underweight? My daughter was only 19 lbs at 16 months and no one ever expressed any concern. She has always been lean and tall.
Also pedialyte won't make him gain weight. Look at the ingredients, it's just sugar water. It's meant to rehydrate after an illness.
How is his diet? Is he picky? My daughter has always been a small eater and gains weight slowly. She's 3 years old and is barely 30 lbs. That's just her body type. She's not a fan of eating LOL
Yesterday I went out with my boyfriend went to watch a movie, me and him don't live together yet. but point is yesterday when he was dropping me off his like sleep over at my house witch the mom and dad lives. I said no,
his response was why is everyone deciding or making choices for you and their going to do the same with the baby, when I know that's not true. what he thinks is that my mom tells me not to sleep over. So he left all mad. and I felt in my heart that he went on and cheated on me...
Starting TWW. Anyone else?
I had a stillborn daughter at 38 weeks this passed Nov. This is my second month ttc. (Last month we only tried for like two weeks though). My last and only pregnancy, I got pregnant the first month of ttc so I hope it's quick this time again.

Thats whay im gonna say next time. They actually made us stay up in Philly for a whole week im sahm and i have a 8 year that needed to go to school and i wasnt gonna leave him uo there and make thats 3 hr commute but they threatened us that if we didnt come up there and stay they would get cps involved ?? so i spoke to husband and we stayed and my mom helped out with my 8 year old. But to have my family split apart for some bs was super hard for me. Becasue all they did was feed him and weigh him for a week!! Lol no extra tests no labs no nothin.... so thats another reason why im hella frustrated with these Drs. Hes really tall for his age in the 80th percentile i think. When i brought this up to the gastroenterologist they said because hes tall he should weigh more.
