Career question!

I'm currently a middle school vocal music teacher and I have been at my school for 7 years. I'm done. It's way too much work, my principal is an idiot, and I just don't feel like it's where I belong anymore. A really awesome position at a great private school is open for next school year. Do you think I would need to tell them about the pregnancy during the interview or conceal it until hired? I hate to do that but this job is seriously great and my kids could go to the private school for very cheap/free. What should I do??

Good luck! I'm a middle school teacher too. I also would like a transfer, but nothing has opened up yet. And, like you, I'm worried that they wouldn't want me. Keep us posted! I'll be praying for you.

Well I will have to tell them before I start teaching since I will be very pregnant when school starts and have to have a sub lined up already. It will have to be a sub that can teach music! But I figure I could tell them after my contract was signed.

I got fired from a company 2 yrs ago after they found out I was pregnant. I was new there and only found out myself a few weeks into working there. All of a sudden they started complaining about me. My mistake was not informing them in writing. When I was fired I was pulled into a conference room and told I was too distracted by my "situation" as my female boss pointed to my belly. Not trying to scare you but please, don't say a thing, take the job, be awesome at it, and then tell them. When you tell them, follow up in an email so you gave written proof of the conversation. In my case I was too new. They weren't attached and weren't losing anything by hiring someone to take my spot bc I hadn't been there long. They preferred a few weeks setback to having to deal with maternity leave. So be careful! It does happen.

I've worked in the hr field for 3 years and legally you have zero obligation to share that information with them. And honestly they don't want you to. if for some reason you don't get hired and you did share that info you can sue them for discriminatory hiring practices...not that you would. Just my two cents

Don't say a thing. If they like you enough to pick you out of all the other applicants than they'll like you pregnant too. Might be bummed to need subs, but they'll still like you. Go after your dreams!

Thank you! That's my thoughts. I just hate to surprise them with it and start off with them not liking me much :(

I'm a HS teacher. Do not tell them! Legally they cannot NOT hire you for being pregnant but they'll find another reason not to hire you. A small school especially might not want the hassle. Remember: you don't owe them an explanation. Do what's best for you and your family. Good luck!
