Culturally appropriate Halloween costumes
Now that Halloween is a little over a month away, I've started seeing all the social media posts about costumes. Last year there was a big hubbub about culturally appropriate costumes...and people vilifying others over their kids wearing Native American costumes among other things. I don't get it personally....I don't see anything wrong with it. Maybe I'm culturally unaware but it's more likely that I just think it's completely ridiculous. So with that...what is your take on this issue?
Well my only problem is seeing the little slut suits they put out for kids to wear.
Thankfully I live in Vermont so it's likely to be freezing, raining, or snowing so we get costumes that fit footy Jammie's and a coat under them. So ill be getting something online.
My only advice is to let kids be kids and keep them kids as long as possible with age appropriate costumes.
Arcan- my neighbor and I plan on be "dependas" for Halloween. Lol. Coach toting, Air Force Wife blasting, yoga pants wearing dependas. Should be fun.
***Edit*** we live on base and our base is actually pretty chill with the crazy, so hopefully no one gets offended, and if they do, well, if the shoe fits...
I don't find children offensive in anything they dress up as. They're kids... A little Indian costume to a little witch. To them they're pretending to be something they do not normally get to be.
Adults on the other hand I can see a different story.... They turn costumes into something vile and or demeaning to the cultural aspects.
I personally don't care what people dress up as, but could understand why other people care.
Ugh I remember last year there was a huge thing about kids using "black face" not understanding that it could be offensive to African Americans. I get it use some tact and a few brains and try to see it from another person's perspective. That being said hubby is from Cherokee Indian decent and I'm sure he'd love to see our daughter dressed up as a little Indian a firefighter (he's volunteer...We both used to be but I quit when I became pregnant) a sheriff's deputy, (he's the Sheriff) or even a little farmer (we are also farmer/ranchers) sadly I'm sure she will be Elsa whether we want her to be or not. Sigh first world problems ;)
Gotta love the, "I'm part native American" comments. Anyone who says that had no clue what their heritage actually is.
Yes, your 1/64 percent blood quantum clearly puts you in a position to say what should or shouldn't be offensive to a cultural group you know nothing about.
I also agree with pp that regardless of blood quantum, where/how you grow up has a huge impact as well. Very few people in the US have any clue about history or current issues faced.
@lala I agree with you! It's stupid for grown ass men to get offended by it but I've seen it sadly....
But anyone can take anything offensively. I get offended by my husband sometimes because I'm like half German, I lived in Germany for some time and got closer to the culture, I love cooking German cuisine especially because of kraut ? but my husband mocks me sometimes and says "oh I lived in Germany for a little bit, I'm sooooo German" (in an annoying preppy girl voice) and I always get pissed at him, I knows he's just pushing my buttons but I HATE it. He knows now not to do it because last time I slapped him...I got tired of hearing it.
This has been done to death. I kinda agree with brunch, but go ask a native. I am suquamish but i dont think people will go out and make a full cedar bark regalia when tbey can go buy a fake buckskin smock with neon feather headdress and make themselves look like an idiot. Or the kid not even knowing he looks rediculous.
Halloween is a time for kids imagination to run wild. It's fun. No child is going to choose their costume based on what other people think is pc. If a certain costume is offensive to you, then by all means don't buy it for your child. If my kid wants to dress as someone the way they are portrayed in the media am I supposed to say no because YOU have a problem with it? I get that there are cultural sensitivities. I get that not everyone is going to agree with my parenting choices. But if my son wants to wear a costume that I have no problem with, I'm not going to try to find someone who disagrees with me to tell me he can't wear it. If I'm ok with it that's all that matters. All I'm trying to say is to each their own.
Kids dress up as soldiers because they look up to them. My dad is a twenty year retired vet. My husband is was a fireman for 5. I mean it's a profession, sorry it'd ridiculous that any soldier would be offended by a child dressing up as an army man. I live by the largest military installation, and I don't know any soldier that is offended by this nor should they be.
I don't like people wearing headdresses, especially at music festivals and stuff. The feathers that adorn headdresses are earned through different actions and have a spiritual meaning. I've never seen a kid walking around on Halloween wearing a pope headdress because that would be disrespectful to that religion
I understand that but it isn't a race, yall are going by pedigree not genetics. By you bringing up genetics, It made it seem like you were saying that Cherokee is genetic. That was why I thought it was a stupid statement. For the record, I understand why native Americans would be offended, if for no other reason, than because the injustices committed against them that continue to this day are widely dismissed or unknown. Sorry if I came across as b**** y. Now I'm all worked up about these offended cops Ha
I also live in a state where there are far more natives (Alaska) than Americans and I myself am a little bit Native American. Like I said, I lumped them together because some people take them just as offensively.
I honestly see no problem with the sexy Indian costume or any sexy costumes. I'm still young...I never got to dress very fun for Halloween. Even if I wasn't trying to be sexy my mom was so far up my ass, id like the one night to feel sexy and get away with it for the holiday lol especially since I'll be about a month pp.
@northern well I was saying fireman because some people think those are just as offensive because the costume isn't correct and it's something some people have worked very hard for (like the military ones as well)
@valkery my husbands a little shît when it comes to Halloween, he refuses to dress up and thinks the whole thing is dumb. He also had a friend OD on Halloween so he's just not into it. I try to tell him it's just one night to dress up and have fun and he says exactly, one night that I'm not wasting money on -.- he's such a party pooper.
Really? I consider myself 100 percent American. You cant genetically be American or Cherokee its a tribe. My point is Cherokee isn't a race it's like a nationality, if you get a DNA test done, it will say native American not Cherokee or Sioux or any other tribe. Just like mine would say western european.
Her statement is stupid.
@Northern I really liked reading your opinions on this topic. Opened my eyes to how some people might feel. I have always had a love for Native American people and items. My mom always told me telling me how sad it was that indians were forced off their land and mistreated and such. Hopefully you don't mind but this sparked a few questions for me.
1. How would you feel if someone dressed as Sacagawea (not sure I spelled that right sadly) for Halloween?
2. In movies like Ice Age and Spirit do you feel the Native Americans are portrayed properly and respectfully? Or no? Sorry a bit off topic.
How is it genetically impossible to be 100 percent Cherokee that's kind of like saying it's impossible to be 100 percent American or 100 percent French.
I am from Southern MS, there are several tribes and reservations in the area. I have some distant native American relatives but I personally know people that are 100 percent Native American. That was a very ignorant statement.
Like most people know my husband is military and we live on a military installation. With that being said of someone were to dress as the alquaeda (spelling?) or as Isis you would get in a lot of trouble. Nazis would be a thin line as well.
But anything else (ie Indians, police officers, fireman..etc) I don't see the big deal. I was almost an Indian one year but only because the costume was sexy ;) lol
Edit: saw someone say day of the dead, I LOVE the face paint and the different costumes for it. That's been the number one costume I have wanted to do for years, along with a pin up girl.
Here in New Orleans, day of the dead regalia is very popular. I think some people do take offense simply because this is a tradition from Mexican culture which still goes on today and not on Halloween. I must say, the costumes are beautiful but just following a trend is not a good enough reason in my eyes. Anyone here of Mexican descent who would care to comment?
I don't do the day of the dead thing because
a) it is not my culture and I have never been to an actual day of the dead celebration
b) its too trendy :)
I don't see anything offense with a native American costume. It actually takes a lot to offend me. Halloween has changed in meaning and the way we celebrate it over the years. It's one day a year to dress up however you want. Children don't pick a Halloween costume to be rude and anti pc..they pick it because that's what they wanted to be, or they liked that costume. I think the whole always trying to be pc thing is getting ridiculous!
I don't like the generic Native American costumes either. There are SO many different tribes with their own customs and dress and their regalia is sacred to them. I wouldn't dress my children as any other culture in a stereotypical manner.
If it were a Disney princess like Pocahontas, or jasmine, or tiana, I'd let dd dress as them but it would be very clear that she was dressed as that particular Disney princess. If that makes sense.
I am 100% Cherokee Native American and I see NO offense in people dressing like "Indians" for Halloween. My children are 50% Cherokee, and 50% Mexican and my daughter was dressed up as a Native american last year, so was my neice. I personally did not grow up on a reservation, but my fathers side did. I don't know any of them and have only met my father once, so I have no idead who they are, but from my point of view no it is not offensive at all.
I have native american ancestry and those costumes don't bother or offend me one bit. Are they a depiction of modern native Americans? Of course not, they're not supposed to be. They're a fun imitation of a historical clothing. It's not going to be perfectly accurate, but I've never met anyone who wore one to be offensive. Most of the kids who choose to wear such costumes are actually very interested or even inspired by native history and culture. I even wore one as a kid, and my native American grandfather never had a problem with it, he just told me stories from his family. Now, the whole "redskins" thing is another issue that does bother me, but that's not what we're talking about.
I also have German and Irish ancestry on my mother's side. Beer wench costumes aren't accurate, but they're still fun, and nobody gets their panties in a wad over them (except the weirdos who hate boobs), and all the little girls with fake red hair wigs and "Brave" costumes aren't going to bother me either. I've never met an Egyptian person who says the Cleopatra costumes are offensive. How many Japanese are complaining about the little ninjas running around on Halloween?
My point is, it's easy to get offended if we look too far into things. But these are kids with no intentions of hurting anyone's feelings. And kids choose costumes because they're interested in something. So instead of berating them and their parents for being insensitive, let's use this as an opportunity to educate kids on something they're obviously already interested in.
My thoughts: if they're dressing up like a character (ex: Disney's version of Pocahontas or Tiger Lily from Peter Pan) then I think it's ok. While neither of those characters are culturally sensitive, it's clear it's a costume from a movie and nothing insensitive or racist is intended. If they're just doing a "generic Native American" I think that's wrong bc there's no such thing as just a "generic Native American" and the store bought costumes that I've seen labeled as such seem very culturally unaware. If that's what my child was interested in, I'd rather he choose a particular tribe and we try to fashion a costume that is respectful of and mimics something that tribe would've worn during a particular time period. I'd use it as a learning experience.
I'd take the same approach for any "real" person that my child wanted to be for Halloween. If he wants to be Buzz Lightyear, that's one thing but if he decides he wants to be George Washington, I'm going to try to be as accurate as possible (within reason) so that it's educational and respectful.
I'm not Native American though, and would love to hear the thoughts of someone who is on this topic.
Yesterday I went out with my boyfriend went to watch a movie, me and him don't live together yet. but point is yesterday when he was dropping me off his like sleep over at my house witch the mom and dad lives. I said no,
his response was why is everyone deciding or making choices for you and their going to do the same with the baby, when I know that's not true. what he thinks is that my mom tells me not to sleep over. So he left all mad. and I felt in my heart that he went on and cheated on me...
Transgender children
So I just learned that in my kids school district (my kids aren't in school yet my oldest will be starting kindergarten next September) there are twin boys who identify as girls. They are 5 years old. What's your opinions on this matter given they are 5!!! I don't believe that at that age they really understand the whole thing. So the entire school had to take a course on how to handle transgender children. For example they can't say girls go this or boys do that. What are...
