Offensive or not?

I know this is old news and disney has already pulled the costumes off the shelves but it's new to me. I don't think it's a big deal it's a costume portraying the character from a Disney movie. What are your opinions?

@ for.fox. A fictional story inspired by legends, people or actual places or by referencing logistical or cultural facts doesn't make it non fiction or a biography. The whole glowing diamond...shrinking etc. to me is as magical as the game of quiddich. This is my view. I'm sure it's not a common one.

This crap is getting old and in my opinion.

Now a days it seems more and more people are always offended by something that is not actually offensive and they're not happy unless they get their way. It's sad and pathetic.

Нравится Ответить

It also said they were annoyed at how comical he was. Something about humor and brawn being more important than smarts when thats not true to Maui.

@ging it's not a fictional story like Harry Potter. Maui is based on a "real" demigod.

??‍♀️ I don't think the costume is offensive. I think if they have a problem with the costume they should have a problem with the movie, but some do have a problem with the movie and that I can kind of see. I don't think it's brown face because the skin color. They needed a skin for the tattoos so they chose Maui's because it's a Maui costume.

It's a story. A fictional one. Like Harry Potter. Needs no political correctness. Even the costumes. If you are teaching a cultural class.. debate it or don't show it. Don't even get me started on kids seeing incorrect images 90 percent of the children's images are depicted of fictional occurrences like talking animals, getting hurt without consequences and zero manners. (Back talk and name calling) I'm more offended when they say stupid in a kids show than what "outfit" kids will chose to wear afterwards. PS..I think Ariel shows too much skin. >> Filter what you let your children watch and use that to develop interest and spark real actual fact based conversations to learn and research about different cultures.

As soon as they come out with another Disney character with brown or black skin there's another problem just like with princess Tiana they where not selling her costume in a lot of places like party city smh it's more of the color of the skin than anything

People today r humorous! Its a costume! They get offended for no reason and love to make a "show" about it.

Нравится Ответить

I think it's stupid. Moana was a big movie and kids loved Maui. My son would've enjoyed that costume. People are so overly sensitive

So what I gather from that is if they didn't portray him obese would they then still be offended? That seemed to be the main concern. Oh well I see he is seen as a very sacred figure in their culture. Disney then shouldn't have made the film at all then.

So I did some reading and found this from when the trailer came out ссылка

I see. I just don't understand why they are upset over a child dressing up as their favorite Disney character. They aren't making fun of it. If people have such a problem with the costume as far as him being an important role in their history then why haven't I heard anything about people being upset over the movie. They made it into a kids animated movie. According to their reasons wouldn't that be offensive too?

@thisisfeeny from my understanding, they heavily researched the Polynesian culture for authenticity to the movie, straight down to the costume that Moana was wearing herself. Even the girl who voice acts Moana is a 16 year old girl from Hawaii. I think majority of their voice cast are actually Polynesian.

So I would be interested as to why someone would be offended over the movie unless they somehow went completely way off course of their actual history and interpreted it in a completely wrong way.

As for the costume, I wanted my DS to be Maui this year. I was wondering how to do the "tapestry" as part of his costume, and haven't figured it out yet. ??‍♀️

Its hard not to be offensive today

My question is then why didn't people get offended when the movie came out? There are costumes for every Disney movie character pretty much. was it not expected that there would be costumes for kids?

Нравится Ответить

I think the offence might come in when you consider that Maui was an actual figure in their culture. It's not just a Disney character. It'd be one thing if it was like with Hercules, where the culture and beliefs are long dead, but Polynesian culture is alive and well, so it's something to consider.

Personally, I'm not offended, but I'm not in a position to say whether or not it's offensive.

Нравится Ответить

I think it's insane.

Don't dress your kids up as pocahontas either, also maybe avoid the cat costumes your cat may get offended and has no way to express it to you. ??

I'm not sure what to think of the costume. I don't find it offensive, but I'm not of that culture. I can see why some would be though. I'm half Native American and there's always been a debate about having those costumes out too. My family's expressed their reasons why they don't like it and it's cuz their roots go a lot deeper. I personally don't feel strongly one way or the other, but I don't think this was intended to be offensive. If anything they're just ignorant to the culture.

Нравится Ответить

So they should pull all the Geishas, Indians n everything else from the shelves too! Goodness, crying over spilled milk.

Нравится Ответить

I don't think anyone has a say really unless it's part of your culture. I didn't fully understand this until I saw Kim K stealing and mocking something very sacred from my culture/religion and selling it for a ridiculous amount of money.

Нравится Ответить

Gosh, anything n everything will offend someone today. Smh

As a person who lived in Hawaii for almost 10 years, there isn't a thing they won't protest over. Want to build a telescope? You're ruining their culture. Want to alleviate traffic by building a train? You're ruining the beauty of Hawaii. Ferry between the island? Nope - ruining the reefs (although somehow the giant cruise ships are fine). Hell, they protested a Walgreens for years in front of the store. One 5 mile freeway took 20 years to get built because of all the protests. And it's like that with literally everything. If it has to do with the Hawaiian islands (as this movie obviously does), it WILL be protested, so this doesn't surprise me at all. You could probably say "island men are hot" and they will tear you down with how racist you are by calling them island men and how you need to learn to respect their culture.

That is why we stick to Star wars! Lol jk, honestly its a costume to me. But hey.. what do I know? Offensive-2017.

Нравится Ответить

I know lots of Polynesians and don't know a single one who cares. But there are probably some who do.

Нравится Ответить

Oh my gosh, people will be offended by anything these days. ?

Нравится Ответить

Every year there is a Halloween debate/debacle. Last year I was told that my son's police man uniform and my burgler costume was offensive. I guess I'm in the "I don't get it" boat, because I'm wondering how else would a kid get those tattoos all over their body if they didn't have the printed skin? I know parents don't have the patience or time to self apply removable tattoos like that. People would be just as offended if the "skin" with tattoos was white instead of brown, because then Disney would be white-washing their culture. I hate that we can't let kids be kids anymore, that parents have to really think on a costume before it's bought, in the name of political correctness.

From what I've read most islanders don't have an issue with it. But there are some who do. And people that are not islanders also were offended.

Нравится Ответить

I'd like to say it's not offensive. It's just like buying my kid a Cinderella dress, a darth Vader costume, etc. It's designed to resemble a specific character. If Polynesian people don't like the costume then I would think that it would be paired with not liking the actual character otherwise it doesn't make sense. And I haven't heard any complaints about Maui or Moana as characters.

Нравится Ответить

Honestly, I'm with skate in the sense that I'm not the kind of person that can have an opinion on this. I'm not an islander and I'm not part of that culture so I can't just brush this off as not offensive

Нравится Ответить

I get people getting annoyed/offended the fact they've said it'll be suitable for holloween, but the costume in general isn't offensive I don't think ?

Нравится Ответить

If it was a costume for a general island man, then yeah I would get it. But it's a specific character, that many kids love and would have liked dressing as. However, I'm not a part of the culture that inspired this character, so how I feel doesn't matter. What matters is how the people who inspired this character feel.
