Want to get your kids ready to head back to school?
Regardless of the grade-level, Erin shares some tips for a smooth transition:
1. Help your kids feel comfortable by ensuring they have the proper and necessary tools for learning. ✏The school should be able to provide you with a list of needed materials from the welcoming teacher at that grade-level.
2. Make it a point to meet your child's teacher(s).🙋 School-to-home communication is a strong indicator of student success. Keep an open mind when communicating with teachers. Believe it or not, they want the best for your child, too.
3. Set routines at home that will support them at school, and keep those routines consistent as much as possible. Examples of this include:
⏰Homework time, location, and expectations. Homework is review and should be completed independently and checked when completed. If homework continues to be completely incorrect, contact the teacher for solutions.
💤Bedtime...Ensure your child gets adequate sleep. Shut down electronics an hour before bedtime, check on your kids after they go to bed to make sure they are asleep or at least trying to sleep. Too many kids tell teachers they do what they want and their parents are none the wiser.
🔔Be prepared! Set out clothes, packed book bag, and lunch, if applicable, the night before. Nothing throws a student off like the anxiety of not being prepared.

@erinflaherty818, for now no, but I'm going to follow you
I love the school routine. All of it. I'm so excited for the new school year.
@smilingwithmyawesome4kids, I know I'm not the one that is leading this chat, but I'm a new mom and a 6th grade science teacher. Routine is best and especially for a 6th grader. Let herknow that if they follow school and classroom procedures the way the school expects her to then they will be fine. As far as social and emotional go, make sure she is aware of her surroundings. Don't bully others, but speak up of you see it. Even if you have to speak quickly and quietly to someone so others don't know. Stick up for yourself and always keep an open line of communication with your parents, they will always fight for you! Let her know all of that and he'll be fine!
@smilingwithmyawesome4kids, she sounds a lot like my daughter! My girl is starting high school this year, but we did two new schools with her in middle school and it's a special time, but also a time to keep it real and be aware.
You look absolutely gorgeous 😍😍😍😘😘😘 mama @erinflaherty818, I wish you big winnings
I absolutely appreciate your awesome advice . I was like how can I prepare her for middle school. I watched YouTube videos and I asked other friends with older children. But they all just told me to not worry. It's hard to not worry especially when it's a different school . She has anxiety issues and I don't want her to get overwhelmed . She is a straight A honor student . It's not hard for her to associate with friends since she's not into boys or parties she's into her studies. She wants to a special needs teacher and own her own clothing line @erinflaherty818,
@smilingwithmyawesome4kids, ok so first, be very real with her. Let her know straight up that there will be gossip girls, cliquey girls, and she will probably find her best friends in middle school. Teach her the difference between true friends and acquaintances. Stress the importance of work before play. Do frequent organizational checks. Middle school kids get very easily disorganized due to the new routines of multiple teachers. Let her know you trust her but that you understand it can be hard and stressful transitioning to middle school. Keep the lines of communication open, you will get frustrated. Her behavior will get so goofy and sometimes, sadly, annoying. LOL just roll with it and don't allow her to stray too far.

@isatorres1127, Awesome! Do you have any questions?!
@smilingwithmyawesome4kids, middle school is HARD. Is your 6th grader a boy or girl? That info will determine my advice!
Thank you mama @erinflaherty818, I appreciate your advice I am definitely going to do that #mombassdorchat
@smilingwithmyawesome4kids, I have that issue with one of mine and we find that if we implement a very structured schedule a week before the school year begins, mornings run smoother and we have less resistance. When they FEEL more prepared, they act more prepared. Also, shut down those electronics at least 30 minutes before bedtime, preferably an hour.
I love this soooo much!! Thank you for sharing!!!
@lovelily, After he is settled into his classroom, go to the front office and ask to speak with someone from their academic support team. Different schools and districts call them different titles. Be sure to express your concerns immediately and ask questions about the testing and support process. Also, be sure to ask your child's pediatrician for an ASD assessment, where to go, and how to get connected to the correct resources.
@jayraemama, many times, students will mimic the confidence or lack of confidence that their parents show. Stay positive, keep on an excited face, make it an adventure, and just make sure he is prepared so that he doesn't feel awkward. Second-grade is so spectacular and exciting. Getting over the hump of the first day is hard, but after that, he should be fine. Kids make friends so easily in the primary grades. Good luck!!
How do I prepare my six grader for middle school @erinflaherty818, #mombassdorchat
Yes @lovelily, that's absolutely true my son is going into the second grade and he is in special needs classes he gets help with his tests and he won't be required to take certain tests to pass on to the next grade. I have 2 special needs sons.
@erinflaherty818, my son is special need and he doesn't like change how do I adjusted back to a school schedule ?#mombassdorchat
@erinflaherty818 my stepson is showing signs of autism. He is a 2nd grader this year. I have heard they test for special placement in 2nd grade if a student shows slow learning. Is this true?
Transgender children
So I just learned that in my kids school district (my kids aren't in school yet my oldest will be starting kindergarten next September) there are twin boys who identify as girls. They are 5 years old. What's your opinions on this matter given they are 5!!! I don't believe that at that age they really understand the whole thing. So the entire school had to take a course on how to handle transgender children. For example they can't say girls go this or boys do that. What are...
