Florida has approved arming teachers
And there goes that final nail in the decision to homeschool my kids ? ??♀️
I wish this law would pass in CT but that would never happen. We have some of the strictest gun laws in the country yet still had one of the worst mass shootings occur. I would PAY to have my child attend a school where teachers were armed. To the people saying "most teachers don't want to be armed"--ok, that's fine. It would never be mandatory. But if you've had proper training, are comfortable, and want to carry--they should be able to. If a gunmen were to come into my son's classroom, I sure as hell would want him to be met with firepower than nothing but sitting ducks & easy targets. Even if that gun gave that classroom a small 1% chance of survival versus having zero chance, I'd take it. Without being armed, nothing will protect a classroom of students hiding under their desks.
Tipsy, I went there for my freshman and sophomore year ???
I agree I don’t believe anyone is bullying u for asking for stats on what u original said. Which was something to the effect that “most” home schooled children are affected negatively. That does require some actually stats to prove your point. And when people asked u became very rude in your responses after the your reply. I’m not patient enough for home schooling I already know that and I know my kids wouldn’t do well with me as a teacher. They hardly listen to me as it haha!! Its not uncommon when people make a broad statement that they are asked for proof of that statement. In no way was anyone bullying u. In fact I think u were quite rude In your other responses. Just my opinion though
If you had read my comments, you would see where I clarified stating lawmakers approved teachers having guns, it’s the first step of a long process.
Phoebe that statement you provided is not one that came from me. And there is nothing personal going on. I don’t even know these people. It’s a public post. Anyone can comment. Seems to me that she really really wanted me to do her work for her and she really didn’t like what I had to say. Which is very common when you are on the internet. Anyway I have to return to real life ❤️. Looks like this app isn’t for me. No way the world is this worth spending my valuable time. And that should go for all of you. Life is short.
I do agree with you @lissa that there are instances on here where I have seen bullying. I don’t think what happened here was that at all.
You made a broad generalization about homeschooling and when asked to produce your facts, could not and began attacking those who asked. Not sure what happened between you and @yaya but it seems personal.
I would never in a million years think I could post a comment like “most children in public schools end up abusing drugs” and not be asked for credible sources.
Lissa, you're absolutely right. There are days when I am online more than I should be. I have taken many breaks over the years when I see it happening. I'm probably due for another one very soon.
Today, however, was not one of those days. Our Friday's are short school days. We read together, they read independently, they did their math work, they practiced piano and then we filled out our weekly learning report to turn into our "school".
Thank you for that. Don’t act like you didn’t imply we’re part of the cause. I WAS bullied in school and I can assure you, we are not bullying you. You must have pretty thin skin to think us asking you to back up your words is bullying.
You are the only one here being vehemently rude. We’re asking for backup to your research, while at the same time saying we’ve done our research. Nice try implying we don’t know how to use the google machine though. When you call us bullies, it trivializes actual bullying that goes on. Don’t even think to compare us calling you for extra information to bullying and school shootings.
I’m sure you’re a very important person with very important people to meet, and very important things to do, so I’ll let you at it.
Tipsy, what highschool did you go to?? Tell me we weren’t at the same school ?
Didn’t know women asking you to prove your point on how it’s damaging to children is labeled as bullying...
Telling people that already know and did their research is not an opinion. Maybe you should practice what you preach.
Schools don’t just get shot up because of bullying. They get shot up and people get killed because crazy loons are able to buy guns legally because the system is failing us.
Under the sea
Yes I was not referring to homeschooling as a whole. I was just saying it can be very damaging in most cases. Not everyone is “ya ya”. Not everyone can school their kids with such passion and be on their phone all day. Most parents lose their temper during homework time, let alone teaching them a full curriculum. Also a lot of parents that homeschool will not ensure that their children have a schedule and have a social life which is very important. Kids need to learn to function from a young age to function on a schedule so they can live successfully and confidently as an adult. Like I said there is so much more to it. I’m sorry to anyone who felt like I was attacking them or their children. If it works for y’all then good for you.
Our school day was done hours ago. No need to worry about my child's education. And as far as researching goes, your condescending attitude leaves much to be desired. I have done the research: good and bad. It's not bullying to say that you're statements are inaccurate. Most homeschool children do not suffer.
I know you’ll make it a joke because I’ve been on babybump since 2011. Off and on. Every time I get on here I see the same people thinking they are the only ones who are right and who are allowed to have an opinion. Here’s something. Y’all are bullies. Y’all get on here and time and time again bully other memebers. This is why schools are getting shot up. This is why. Bullying. Online bullying. Y’all can act like this isn’t some type of bullying. But it is. I made a statement and you are telling me I have to back it up to make you happy. You want to tag my name and point me out specifically and cram it down my throat. Idc. I’m just trying to be happy and say hey my research showed this. Just lighten up. I do not have to prove anything to y’all. Prove it to yourselves. Quit getting on this app and acting like you are higher or better or smarter or like other people can’t be right just because you don’t want to be wrong. You wonder why all of these kids are killing theirselves or shooting schools up but you ass mothers are the first ones to jump on the internet and be hateful and then play innocent. Make the world a better place and if you see something you don’t like keep scrolling. Oh wait it sounds like you do that on your research. Why not on here?
I am so inspired by y’all. Y’all have all day to be on BabyBump. You must have so many more hours a day than me that you’ll be able to teach your children and give them a social life with the amount of time you spend on here commenting and posting. I get on here from time to time. I don’t know y’all. Why do I have to back myself up. I made a statement and y’all were begging for me to prove it to y’all like you can’t do it yourself. Here’s a quick how to research for dummies. Step one: get off of babybump. Step two: research the things you’re so passionate about and look for not only the good but the bad. Congrats.
I’m not happy about teachers being armed either.
Saw yesterday on the news they’re trying to pass it to allow it in Oklahoma and another one where people don’t have to have permits ???♀️. Haven’t looked much into it but they said they did a survey or a poll and 70% of oklahoma teachers want to be armed. Not sure if that’s the entire state or just local in okc.
Everything is about money in the United States. Sad that the nra held a conference and guns weren’t allowed but yet they’re all for guns being in schools.
The nra members count as 1% of the United States. Why in the f*** are we allowing 1% of this countries population to let this keep on happening?!
It doesn’t matter what your opinions are but it takes action to make a difference. Call your state representatives and tell them.
Attend the pta meetings at school. Sign petitions. There’s so much we can do to help prevent it.
What is my one story? My personal experience of homeschooling was negative. Ive chosen to look past that and have actually changed my negative outlook on homeschooling to a positive From my own research. I wasn’t specifically trying to prove to anyone that it was good. I started out not wanting to like it because I didn’t want to homeschool my kids when Dh did. Not sure what you’re trying to argue here. Don’t act like everyone is flipping out and you’re the one staying calm, your responses seem to be quite the opposite.
?♀️
ETA, my passions don’t include kids getting wet from a little rain.
Does anyone else feel personally victimized by my comments either? You remind a lot of the people who get so offended over everything they see on the internet. There’s a whole other thread going on about a Mom playing with her kid in the rain rn y’all should go check out. Tell me about your passion for that.
I don’t see anyone losing their heads. You made claims to something, we asked for sources, you came back telling us to do our own research and that you were stating your opinion. Opinion doesn’t equal fact, so next time don’t present your argument as factual.
Cssavy cool story. Sounds like you’re all about your one story. I don’t owe y’all anything. It’s an app. You want the stories and the stats. Search for it. Since you can homeschool, you should be able to do full extensive research yourself. Read my comment before this one. Lighten up. Don’t tag my name in a comment and act all above me because you think one way and I know another. It’s not that deep. Do what’s best for your kids girl ????. And you can go glen coco too!!
Look you’re passionate. That’s really cool. But you are the one coming at me like I personally offended you. It’s not that big of a deal. Lighten up. It is what it is. What I’m saying isn’t based off of just my opinion. And it clearly doesn’t matter. When researching you will find what you are looking for. And like I said it’s not always the case that it’s a bad thing. So congrats to those who had an awesome experience. I love happy stories. That’s really good for you. My comments weren’t toward any of you personally so by all means don’t act like I called you out personally. And yes me saying you go glen coco!! It was a joke. With all the free time spent on baby bump, you might go watch mean girls. It’s hilarious and might help loosen some of y’all up. Jesus Christ I’m not beating you with What I said at all. Seriously LIGHTEN UP. Life is short.
Xavier’s, I agree. We need better gun control, but instead the government’s answer is to put more guns into the mix, right into our children’s classrooms.
Shootings can happen anywhere, true. It’s best to teach our kids how to handle themselves in such a situation, but school shootings are something I have the power to protect my child from. Lots of decisions are made out of fear, the important part is making sure a plan is in place and the decision isn’t rash. I would never homeschool my child if I didn’t think between my husband and I we could provide a positive and enriching learning environment for her. Luckily, we have a few years to figure it out. I think most parents wanting to homeschool feel the same way.
The worst argument I've heard is "criminals will get guns reguardless of the laws". .
Well why do we have any laws? Why do you have to be 16 to get a driver's license? I mean criminals can get ahold of cars. Why do you have to be 21 to get into a bar or buy alcohol? When criminals will do it reguardless of laws??? Come on
...
There are teachers kidnapping or raping/molesting these children why should they be able to carry a gun this is a huge disaster. The teachers doing these types of acts noone would have ever thought they would be the ones now they're being equipped with guns they could very well be the danger to our children rather than protect them..
I have British and American citizenship and my dh works for an Australian company. I want to move desperately until America gets their ish together. I know we won’t though because dh parents are not able to travel easily and we love them so much. But I can barely stand the thought of my babies going to school and my oldest starts kinder next year. I have so much anxiety just dropping her off at preschool two mornings a week. I am so upset by the state of our country right now, really I could cry all day. It’s so depressing.
Yes teachers just like every other human being can have mental disabilities can't have defects can have psychological issues. That's why I think that it would be good for teachers to be required to take a gun safety course to have psychological evaluations to be tested on their knowledge of the gun and their ability to use it properly because then you would know if somebody does come into the school shooting those teachers have a way to defend themselves and their students. I don't think that teachers teachers aren't any more of a risk than the people that are walking around on the street with illegal guns or kids who have been going through a lot and being bullied with guns at home and bring them to school at least if the teachers have the ability to defend themselves they can get in there and control the situation while the police are on their way
Why couldn't the teachers be given the training that they would need to be able to properly use a weapon in a situation where they would need to I'm not saying teachers could all just have guns and not know how to use them and not know anything about gun safety and just pop a cop off whenever but what about when somebody's in the school shooting and the none of the teachers can do anything until the police get there
Teachers get stressed easily. Over crowded rooms full of kids is a hectic environment. Teachers are NOT trained for this...the f'n NRA saw dollar signs and saw an easy solution. Disgusting and disturbing, indeed. Forced homeschooling is also concerning to me,as Yaya explained. Hopefully the parents are willing to give it all they got to ensure a successful future for their kids. Shootings don't just happen at schools.
I think there should be guns in a school, in a very secure spot but idk about every teacher having one. Maybe a few guards who are specially trained and are throughout the school. Only reason why i agree in some ways is because i truly believe that would be the only way to stop someone with a gun who is planning on killing. With another gun. Not like we can predict which schools we see shootings happening in so all schools should be treated that way.
Or every school should have metal detectors.
My local schools were built around 10 years ago and I've never seen a school so secure before. Every door is locked and there are cameras at every entrance and around the school. Inside and outside. More obviously has to be done in all schools to protect our children because this is the one place children should feel safe at. Its really a shame and i dont feel bad for anyone who decides to target children.
We live in Florida, and I absolutely won’t send my son to a school where teachers are armed. So, yeah, we will homeschool out of fear. I don’t feel like there is any other option for us in that scenario.
I’ve had many family members who homeschooled their kids and the parents checked checked out, left it up to the kids to do their work. I have two nieces who didn’t graduate. Just fell off the radar. If you are going to be that kind of parent, you need to figure something else out. It can be a total fail or really successful. It’s all up to the parent and how much they put into it. I hope that one thing that comes out of this is more homeschooling resources since the demand is up.
What happens when an 17-year old 180-pound male senior overpowers a 120-pound teacher and takes her gun? I’m sure some will argue he can go get a gun illegally if he wanted, but having more guns out there the school environment is 100 percent not the answer. It’s a disaster waiting to happen. I wouldn’t allow my son at a friend’s house with handguns. Absolutely not allowing him in classrooms with handguns.
Why can’t we get some metal detectors and lock these places down?
Yaya, yeah he graduated the year before I went to highschool, but my sister saw him around fairly often on football practice days
I think the glencoco comment was more of a “good for you, you go glen coco” type of idea, not from the actual user. I haven’t seen her in months
Lissa, don’t come here making claims and then refuse to back them up with any credible sources. From my own research, homeschooling has come across as nothing but positive. Parents have to take initiative, but those who don’t are not the norm. Sounds like you talked to one person who was homeschooled and made a broad over-generalization.
Also, homeschooled kids are allowed to participate in school sports for schools in their district. Tim Tebow was homeschooled and played football at my highschool. He had a lot of friends there as well, he just learned in a different setting.
@lissa I went to public school then homeschool. Homeschooling was easier for me to catch the information. One on one learning is easier instead of one on thirty. I was also the only one out of all my brothers and sisters (who all went to public school full time) who went to college. Homeschooling is beneficial when done correctly. Every person Iv ever spoke too who has had homeschooling has not had a bad experience. Actually the opposite.
Lissa, you keep using words like "most" and "a lot". Those words mean something. But it seems like you are using them based only on your own limited opinion. I have done the research. I am currently in the homeschool community. I know it can be done badly. I don't dispute that at all. But I can tell you based on actual studies done by people far more qualified than I am, that home educated students, as a whole, are doing fine. They are being sought after by Ivy League universities and they are more likely than public schooled students to complete a 4 year degree. I don't mean to attack you and I'm sorry if I am coming off that way. I have spent hours educating myself about this topic and I am very passionate about it.
Also, did Glencoco block me? ? I don't see her comments
How would y'all feel about trained individuals with a taser gun, flash grenade and pepper spray? Those options are successful at stunning a criminal without the possibility of seriously hurting nearby students/staff, would those measures make any of you feel better about school safety?
Most parents that homeschool are impatient and are not qualified to homeschool in the least. A lot of children endure verbal abuse from their parents because their parents get frustrated so easily. Also a lot of parents don’t keep their children on a schedule and they don’t make sure their kids have a life outside of the home. If you need statistics please do your own research. I never said it was the case in all situations but unfortunately is for a lot. Talk to people who have been homeschooled. Not just a handful but as many as you can. They will tell you how it made them awkward and how they wish they would of went to an actual school. There’s just so much to it. More then I have the time to take here on this app. If you feel like you would rock at it then ?? good for you. I’ll be rooting for you glen coco.
Monkeys, if we could afford a private school I would be 100% down with sending her to one! We aren’t catholic so I have no idea what the legislation is regarding catholic and private schools.
Csavvy, today while I did Language Arts with my son, I learned what an indefinite article is and why it is different from a definite article. Maybe I learned it in school at some point, but if I did, I completely forgot about it. I think one of my favorite parts of homeschooling is learning along with my boys. A good curriculum can make up for a multitude of deficiencies on my part.
I don’t know why, but it doesn’t bother me. If a teacher wants to kill a student they will just bring a gun from home. It kind of makes me feel safer ? idk. I’ll have to research it more. I doubt my school will do because it’s a catholic private school, so they probably don’t even believe in guns.
This probably isn't popular opinion but I don't believe school shooters care if they live or die. A lot of them end up killing themselves or they know going into it they might die. Mentally ill people don't care if by chance they go into a school that has a couple armed teachers that by chance might be close to the shooting. That by chance they don't stay and protect their class room instead of running in the line of fire playing hero.. Teachers didn't go to school to join the army. If you they wanted to save people firing off AR-15's they would have chosen a different profession.
Wishing, the blog linked to other blogs. I understand that not all homeschools are created equally. Not all brick and mortar schools are either. While it is difficult to track all homeschools the way public schools are tracked, the research I've seen shows that home educated children excel in college and beyond. But if there are studies that show the opposite, I really do want to see them.
Yaya, oh ok, I missed that comment! Dh wants to work from home when she becomes school age, he is a math and science genius, has a masters in optics/engineering so he is much more confident in his abilities than I am in mine. I’m more creative, but lack in math skills. I just know that I learned practically nothing from when I was homeschooled and it set me back when I was placed in public school. I definitely will do everything in my power to not let my Dd have that experience. I think homeschooling can be very beneficial to some kids, and maybe other kids do better in a school setting. I’m introverted so my biggest concern is making sure she gets enough social interaction.
Homeschool is damaging if you’re negligent in your schedule and education. That seems to be the exception, not a rule pp.
For those wondering, the bill has not been passed but basically the first step was approving it and FL lawmakers have approved it. There are still hoops to jump through, but I think the senate has voted in favor.
Csavvy, I am sorry! I wasn't directing my comment at you. A pp commented about wondering how many people would be homeschooling as a result of this. That is the comment I was responding to.
As a public schooled person, I didn't know if I was qualified to educate my children. It's scary no matter what your educational background. I have no doubt that you will do what is best for your children.
I feel like a shooter *may* be less likely to go to a school and shoot it up if they think they'll be met with teachers with guns. I highly doubt it will be mandatory. But if a shooter is methodical and plans things out they probably won't want to play the guessing game on whether they'll be met with a teacher that has a gun to defend their kids.
Pp that was not my question. I should have been clear. Users are saying thst teachers might go crazy and hurt someone. Anyone tescher or not could do that.
