This is my 18th year working in public education. In the first 12ish years of my career, I never ever encountered students saying deeply offensive and racist remarks about a group of people or directly to a student who is a part of a marginalized group.
Despite growing up in an extremely progressive and diverse area, I have mostly worked in schools/areas that are predominantly white since I’ve spent all of my career in rural areas. I’ve now lived in my community for 14 years.
Sadly, things started shifting slowly over the course of the last 6+ years to the point where I am now dealing with racist remarks on a semi-regular basis. The fact that this shift occurred during the first few years of the first Trump administration and has ramped up significantly since then is not lost on me or my colleagues.
Children learn through observation. And the adults in our country are leading our children down a deeply disturbing path. It’s so incredibly disheartening to watch this behavior in our children. I’m thankful for my upbringing because it helped shaped me into someone who has zero time for overtly or thinly veiled racism. Not happening on my watch. Period.
Schools are not perfect, but do you know what they are? They are a reflection of our society as a whole. And what is being reflected is abhorrent.
Our children deserve better than this. If you’re not alarmed then you’re not paying attention.
If you’re not paying attention then shame. on. you.
Yaaay we have a virtual evaluation with early intervention later this afternoon to see if my son qualifies for speech therapy. Wish me luck on getting him to sit in one area for an hour and a half so people can watch him play over the interwebs! 😂🫣
UPDATE: It went pretty good! They said he’s only at about 12 month age range for communication, so he qualifies for that, and he also qualifies for social emotional therapies (which doesnt really surprise me since he’s never around other kids), and for some fine motor therapies which I had no idea he’s a bit behind in. So now we play the waiting game of waiting for a call about starting all of this.
I need to vent. I have a friend that has been my friend for about 13 years. My grandfather passed away last year and he left myself and sister a very large trust. He was a multi millionaire and put everything in a trust to be split. The day I found out about him passing and the money my friend was with me and was a part of the conversation so she knew. Life has changed some for me but honestly not a lot. I basically live the same way I was before, I’m still renting, I do plan to buy a home in the future but nothing crazy. I still work but not as much as I was m. Honestly I haven’t done much with my trust or even started investments yet because it’s just a lot to process. Anyways, my friend is constantly making comments like ohh how much did you pay for that?, or she’ll question me about how much money I have in an account because I told her I was broke. She’s constantly saying well you said you were broke how do you have money for this or that ? The other day she asked me where I was going and I said on the way to the store, she said ohh yea you go to the store every day. Mind you I go to the store for basic stuff like groceries or household items. I go to kroger and target. Nothing fancy. She asked me before did I plan to change or was I going to stay the same. I said of course I’m not going to change. The other day I said I wanted to do the 21 and me dna test. She asked me how much it was and I was like oh it’s not a lot like $89 or something. She said oh I’m starting to not like you, you’re bougie now. Ummm how ? I’m not splurging, Im
not out here swiping and being reckless. Idk it just makes me feel really uncomfortable and I purposefully try to not let her know any time I spend money because I don’t want her to treat me differently. I don’t even like talking about money. We have gone out to eat a few times and I’ve paid. One time she paid for us and another time we paid our own way. When her daughter made a comment about it she said I don’t need my friend to pay every time we go eat, I’m not that big of a bum I can’t afford my own food. That actually bothered me. Because Any other time I usually pay for us. I don’t know y’all, I don’t want this to affect our friendship but I feel like it is and in the end she’s going to treat me differently.
I don’t understand why people have kids if they can’t do the bare minimum of decent parenting - making sure they brush their teeth, spending some time reading or doing homework, eating dinner together most nights, talking to their kids and taking interest in them as humans.
I see far too many parents making lame ass excuses as to why they should sit in their bedrooms all day while their children are running amok or are glued to screens. What’s the point of having kids if your version of parenting is the equivalent of mediocre pet ownership?

At what age did you start letting your kids watch Disney movies? Like the traditional princess cartoons( Cinderella, beauty and the mulan,moana,etc) and maybe even the pixar ones the toy story, finding nemo, or the incredibles,etc??
A friend of mine has a 3.5 year old that loves Belle (pretty sure it's mom that loves her) and hasn't seen any movies. My friend says they're too scary with the villian scenes and what not. With my oldest I honestly didn't give it second thought, she never had an crazy nightmares or was traumatized. I'm cautious about what my little watches but she has been exposed to Disney movies. She mainly doesn't have the attention span to sit through and watch to the "scary" parts yet.
To me even if it is scary expose the child to it as they seem interested. Fast forward or turn it off if it's too much but it teaches them to feel something other than happy or sad....but maybe I'm wrong and exposing my kids too damn early to these movies.
My biggest upset is when people talk over me and I have to wait to talk or yell over them to be heard…. I’m so sick of being talked over and patronized and treated like I’m so small. Mostly my kids, which I’ve tried correcting so much in the past, to no avail. Now my husband is doing it too…… I actually pulled out our suitcases tonight. Didn’t put anything in them, but it got my kids to sit still and quiet long enough to listen. Hopefully this time they heard because I’m so disrespected that it makes me feel so small and sad. I don’t know how much longer I can keep this up. Only place I could go to is my mom’s in another state, but she downplays everything.

Havent been on here in 2 years. after losing my Grandma back in 2022 i kinda lost myself and went through alot mentally. wondering if anyone i use to talk to is even on here anymore hope all is doing well!
but anywho life been a crazy roller coaster the last two years finally got divorced, met an amazing guy over a year ago, gettin our first house together, gained an awesome stepson, and just found out we got another lil one on the way due in August.
The girls are doing great. Jerri is in 2nd grade and bout as big as me now. Emma and Emily started pre-k this year and loving it!!!

Haven't been on in a while. The ten year old is basically getting her periond at any moment. She's got quite the attitude but she's living her best preteen life. The baby isn't really a baby anymore. She's sleeping through the night, fully weaned from the boob and an absolute rock star at her Montessori School.
Hubby and I were finally branching out again having date nights, planning a big vacation for just the two of us next year to celebrate ten years
....but I'M PREGNANT... we're happy and anxiously awaiting our first appointment next week because this was not planned and completely spontaneous. We're still shocked after doing all the iui/IVF treatments with the last kiddo. We were so close to having the best sleep of our lives again and amazing get aways oh well. I hope its a boy!!🤞👶
So, not to long ago my 87 years old grandma fall down the stairs and was hospitalized. She have dementia but keep coming to philly to see her BF. My uncles are the ones who drive her here which she stay for a few days with her BF. I dont like it because they be leaving her and this is the reason she fall in the first place. She was left to be with her BF and try to walk up the stairs without help.
Idk why they think this is ok. So, when she get hurt I am the one who have to do everything because im the closest.
