I feel like there’s a difference between being a single mother and just being a mother who is single. If the father handles his responsibilities and helps you financially you aren’t technically a single mother but just a mother who is single. I don’t know... my friends and I have debated about this. What do you guys think?

I agree all the way. But in my circumstances I know all the way I am a SINGLE PARENT! I don't get no child support or any type of financial support from either one of my kids fathers. I am my kids sole provider & head of household all my kids really know is me 🤷🏽‍♀️ sure they know their dads but their around me more I'm the one that provides all their needs and wants not their dads at all.

Honestly I don’t care who wants to be considered what. All I know is I don’t get a break. My kids don’t get visitation with their dad and barely any financial help. Maybe a phone call here and there but that’s it. I’m doing it all and I am a single mother. I don’t get every other weekend off it’s all me all the time. If a mother who has her kids only on weekdays feels just as overwhelmed and tired then that’s not my place to say whether or not she’s a single mom. It doesn’t affect me.

I think it's levels. In a sense I agree that if a man is taking care of his child, but he's not in a relationship with the child's mother, she's just a mother who is single, i.e. not in a relationship (I guess period 🤷🏿‍♀️.) If the dad arranges baby sitter, has his child as much as possible, financially supports the child, shows up to the child's extra curricular activities, shows up to curricular activities... she's just a mom that's single

If dad just throws money at his child, only can take his child on court appointed days, doesn't participate in his child's life, doesn't show any interest... then she's a single mother, doing it all by herself. And funny, I know married women who would fit this description, and I tell them they are single mothers, the father is just in the house for show

I agree if the other parent is contributing 50% of everything financial ,time ect. You are not a single parent. You are a parent who is single.

Why is it just about finances though. Emotional and physical support be much more beneficial for a child in the long run

I disagree. I’ve seen many different situations through my years and guess what. They were single moms. One had her son go to his father’s every other week, but it didn’t mean that the weeks she had him were any less difficult than that of any other single mom. One had financial support but he lived across the country, that didn’t make it much easier, helped cover essentials but that was it. A single parent is a single parent. Case closed.

I like your perspective and how you put it.

My ex husband contributed financially but that's it. I was 100% a single mom. Everyone's situation is different and I could careless what and why a person wants to be called a single mom.

Unpopular opinion...those that have never been a single mom shouldn't have an opinion on what defines it. Period.

I get this because kids don’t only need the financial aspect. Like yeah helping financially is great and all but what about time? Appointments, school meetings, being there for them. Ect

I like what you are saying. If the father is involved in the child’s life then you are just single. If the father isn’t involved and you are paying for everything etc then you would be a single mom.
