Yes that fine to ask what he likes or what they need or would like you to get. I have asked if they wanted toys or clothes or even if the kid likes to go by there on toys.
Yea it’s okay to text and ask. I do that as well and moms text me and ask what my sons likes for his birthday. I always let them know a gift isn’t required. I’ve had a child who couldn’t attend still send in a gift. I thought that was really nice.
