My fiance is brilliant and does everything for me and our daughter. He also gets upset and defensive easily (not in a frightening way or anything). So it's hard to tell him things sometimes. There's two problems which I've tried to work out numerous different ways even tho the only way it seems is just to come out and say it which I did with point one once and it didn't make a difference. Wasn't even mentioned again!
Point one: whenever I'm unwell, upset, want to vent etc he always compares it to his experience. Normal enough.. it's natural and we all do it. Plus it can help the person who is talking to you. So I wouldn't mind but it's every single time and multiple times during my conversations which hey interrupted anyway. Even if there's no direct similarity he will find a link somehow somewhere. I don't want to seem selfish because I'm not asking him for sympathy or anything. I just need to now and then vent, talk, pour my heart out etc where he will listen and talk without making it about him somehow. Often I forget who started the conversation or the whole thing turns to his problems and I don't get to finish what I'm saying properly
Point two which is the biggest:
When we first were friends we had movies as one of out mutual interests, though I'm more of a gamer which he's recently getting more into. He would always share movie news and links etc online. Over time, especially when we got together and moved in together it began to be clear that it was more than a hobby and an obsession. We hardly watch movies anymore as he works part time and we have the baby. I do miss cuddling up and watching them.
However it's become stale for me. 90% of everyday conversations are about directors, films, actors, box office hits and flops etc. I just sit and go mmm, yeah over and over. He regularly goes over to his collection of dvds and blue Ray's to look at them and their back covers.
If I try to talk about anything I'm interested in he will either seem like he's rushing me off by going mm mm really quickly and not listening so he can talk (hard to explain unless you're there), or he will link it to movies again. Like an example was Nessie which I'm interested in. He talked about the movie loch ness.
And when I do make the mistake of talking about a movie or my opinion on it or something there's gotta be a long convo about it. It's as if he's reviewing it. If there's anything I do like to watch he talks over it anyway, even if it's just a short YouTube video. Many times I've tried taking videos of my daughter and he's been talking in the background about marvel or something

We have had issues similar to this but not the same... I found just sitting down and saying 'this upsets me, I wish you would listen, pay attention and not make it about you. Just nod or don't say anything if you don't know what to say.' actually worked.. X

Thanks, I did say it outright once when id ha enough but it didn't change :( I feel bad tho too cos he hasn't any family or friends here to talk to

I think the only way to say it is to just say it outright. Just don't turn it into a slagging match

My advice on point one: I've had this issue with my dh and my dh has had with me. We've gotten to the point where we've both said "I just want you to listen". We as humans tend to be "problem solvers" so it's hard to just listen. So now before I vent, I tell him "I'm just venting" and he'll just listen.... so maybe just communicate that to him before hand? When I do it to my husband it tends to be because he takes REALLY long to get to the point (I'll admit I'm not the most patient though lol). So if he spends 20 rambling I tend to cut him off and offer my solution to essentially end the convo that's not going anywhere. Which isn't fair to him at all, and I'm working on being more patient. I think we does this to me too when I'm just blabbing in nothing in particular lol. My advice would be to maybe be quick and to the point with what the problem is.
Advice on point two: i think this is a man thing. My brother would go through seasons where he would become "obsessed" with certain things and would ONLY talk about those things and nothing elSe. It drove me nuts growing up. My dh tends to do the same thing, he goes through his season and immerses himself into whatever is fancying him at that time....it drives me crazy too. I've learned over the years how to steer him in certain directions and topics that are more tolerable to me. But honestly sometimes we just have to "mhmm mhmm" along then move onto the next thing. If he starts getting really intense and debatable then I essentially get out of there quickly (go do laundry, take a shower, etc) . I know I can't change him, he is passionate about what he likes, as we all are in some way. 🤷♀️ I'm not into movies or gaming, but my dh is. But we do have common interests, camping, being outside etc, so I really try and put major focus on that when I can. I don't really have much advice and I am now kinda rambling, sorry lol. I don't know if anything is said helped, but I tried. Time for me to sleep lol 😂

Thanks. I don't know how it didn't work last time I said it outright

No it's ok thanks. It's just every other non movie topic or activity he always makes about movies. And there's no quiet time. It's almost constant movie talk in-between wherever little we manage to do non movie related. And I told him loads times too to keep his voice down cos he's really loud

It's not a regular thing focused on just one season, movie or franchise, but constant about all movies

Perhaps a reality check I agree with the others for number 1 and just say I need to talk and I need you to listen you need to hold your tongue. Second point I'd say to him imagine if all talk of anything movie related was banned what would you tall to me about?
I did this once when I realised me and my OH talk about work all the time and I found it so difficult sometimes to find another topic, I'd even start discussing the weather. But for him that might be his safety net, he knows it was a mutual thing in the beginning and therefore it's his go to

I think it's Asperger's as there are some matching signs
