My insurance told me the same thing . Just take your prescription to a medical supply store and they’ll do the work to see what the prescription covers and will call you when it’s ready to pick up. I wouldn’t spend out of pocket if you don’t need to. Just make sure the medical supply store you call takes your insurance . There may be a copay depending on if they are in or out of your network. Still a lot cheaper than buying out right on your own

My hospital gives out free Medela hand pumps after you give birth. I liked them but they are the only ones I have tried. You should see if your hospital gives any for free too, so you can at least try before making a purchase.

I have to call and they do everything over the phone and mail the pump but I just want an idea of a good brand that might be covered by insurance but I will need to buy a hand pump while in hospital and when I get home because it could take a few days to be mailed to me

Have you tried going to the websites areoflowbreastpumps.com or edgepark.com my insurance (over the phone) said I could get one through insurance with a prescription after baby is born but I ended up getting mine 3 weeks before my dd was born through Aeroflow

ETA with my first I rented a hospital grade pump through WIC, I’d call your local office if your insurance isn’t approved through the above websites

@leahthebaddie, no I haven’t the guy said it wouldn’t hurt to try and call and get everything set up and I may get it before baby born but they are doing it now that after baby born you order it because women don’t breastfeed and sale it that’s what they guy told me

@madalynnelenamom2016 oh I'm sorry to hear, you could see if there's a breastfeeding consultation department too, they might offer some? I don't know if WIC will but I do know they are very strict with their actual pumps because you have to be working or in school to get them. I would try Amazon for purchase wise and Google free hand pump samples to see if there are any possible to get

My insurance was the same... I had to have my doctor send in the prescription but they wouldn’t fill it until my baby was born. It was a pain the ass to leave the house with a newborn to pick up my pump, but I didn’t use it until my son was 3 weeks old anyway. I then went on to breastfeed (and pump at work) for 14 months. Are you planning on exclusively pumping or pumping in addition to breastfeeding? It’s inconvenient to wait, but not the end of the world if you’re breastfeeding.

@ek620, pumping and breastfeeding i pumped and breastfed my 2 year old til she was about 20 months old but my milk didn’t come in til like the 4th day at the hospital but I’m leaking at 35 going on 36 weeks pregnant so i figured I may have milk come in during the hospital when baby is born so the guy said it could take a few days to get it delivered to my house so I want to just be prepared to have a hand pump one til mine comes in the mail and plus I can pump milk in car so when we go somewhere I have milk ready

I bought a evenflo hand pump because I was so engorged when I got home from the hospital. I liked it. I only used for a couple days. But honestly it was easier to express the milk into a bottle because my nipples were so sore and the hand pump made it worse. But my nipples were sore my whole pregnancy so I think that’s why it was worse.

I got the evenflo for like 20$ at Walmart btw

@aileen_west, my insurance wants me to call and get mine after baby born so when I call it will take a few days to get delivered do wic give free hand pump ?

madalynnellenaismommy20162018

MoMMyOf M&E&J 2016/2018/2021

@dinamarie1995, omg my nipples now are so sore and hurt since I breastfed my daughter til she was 20 months old and she just turned 2 in June so they are dried and have little holes and looks scabby but when I pumped the first few months it felt easier than giving her the breast because she has a lip tie

@madalynnelenamom2016, Sorry I didn’t read your original post closely enough to see you were asking about insurance covering a manual pump. I used the medela manual pump. It looks like it retails for $30. Do you have a Health Savings Account (HSA)? A pump would be reimburse-able.

mamaof2babes

I just read that your milk took a few days to come in, while I was in the hospital my hospital encouraged hand expressions into a little medicine cup and syringe feed the colustrom to baby. They said it can help your milk supply come in by 130%. My milk was fully in by day 2 I would ask for that to help as well!!

MoMMyOf M&E&J 2016/2018/2021

@wolfnurturer, o yea they are the wic gave me a electric one the big green one and I had to go in every 2 weeks so thy could check to make sure it working and the wic is like 30 mins away from my home so it was hassle and if I didn’t show up they would blow up my phone even if I had rescheduled but I remember they had gave me a hand pump but I don’t know if they do it anymore??

madalynnellenaismommy20162018

MoMMyOf M&E&J 2016/2018/2021

@its.a.bird, I heard good of madela and spectra I wonder if I can get a madela hand pump and spectra electric pump from insurance

mamaof2babes

Dina Isaac

@madalynnelenamom2016, oh no!! Maybe try putting Vaseline on now to get them feeling better before baby comeS! If they are super sore at hospital ask for a nipple shield literally saved me both times breast feeding for the first couple weeks. My one side is still super sore so I use it on one side still. I hope it helps.

wolfnurturer

@madalynnelenamom2016 I would call them in the morning to see.

madalynnellenaismommy20162018

MoMMyOf M&E&J 2016/2018/2021

@dinamarie1995, I had that one but I had a problem with the rubber thing that made the pump work and then it got loose I thought I was doing it wrong but it was those rubber thingys lol

madalynnellenaismommy20162018

MoMMyOf M&E&J 2016/2018/2021

@ek620, the hand pump are cheaper at Walmart that I seen the insurance covers the electronic one so I wanted an idea for a hand pump brand and a electric brand for the insurance if it covers certain that certain brand

madalynnellenaismommy20162018

MoMMyOf M&E&J 2016/2018/2021

@aileen_west, I remember they gave me a hand pump but I don’t know if they do it still at wic I will for sure when I go to my appointment Wednesday but they let me barrow the electric pump and it was such a hassle with it

madalynnellenaismommy20162018

MoMMyOf M&E&J 2016/2018/2021

mamaof2babes

madalynnellenaismommy20162018

MoMMyOf M&E&J 2016/2018/2021

@dinamarie1995, I had to use it the first few months then my daughter realized what it was for til she took it off of me and then it my nipple she was on but when she had got her teeth omg she left me like cuts and so now they are dried and sore and painful

I had to call the number after birth as well. It arrived two days later—- we were still in the hospital! While at the hospital I was able to use their hospital grade pump and they even gave me a handheld Medela pump for free. For most there isn’t a need to pump early on though. They also gave me lanolin and a nipple shield. Granted, I was having a horrible time nursing and my little one was sick. But if you NEED it they will give it to you.

lulu85_18

Did they give you a medical supply company to call? Mine is coming from Target, but it’s technically supplied by MPCS. They dealt with my insurance for me. They might even mail it to you.

The hand pump I have for now is Medela. (Top right of this pic.) I bought all of this stuff from FSAstore.com. They only sell medical supplies.

MoMMyOf M&E&J 2016/2018/2021

@morganavery3, there is 2 hospitals one is 30 mins and the other 1 hour in a half i ask my doctor since she goes to both and delivers babies she said they don’t so she wanted me to be at least 35 weeks to give me prescription for pump which I will be 36 weeks this week when I see her on Wednesday

madalynnellenaismommy20162018

MoMMyOf M&E&J 2016/2018/2021

@amysbabies, omg the only thing they gave me at hospital with my first daughter was a nipple shield and my milk didn’t come in til the 4th day I got out of hospital and the same day I went to wic and they gave me a electric pump but it was a hassle going every 2 weeks with my incision still trying to heal so they just gave a hand pump but I don’t know if they do it anymore

madalynnellenaismommy20162018

MoMMyOf M&E&J 2016/2018/2021

@lulu85_18, the guy gave me 3 numbers to call edge park eco and some other name so I’m hoping I can ask my doctor for the prescription and try

I would try going through Aeroflow. They might get better answers for you. For me, they called my insurance and I didn't even need to talk to my doctor or insurance at all. They do all the work for you for free. But anyway, I just got my Spectra through Aeroflow. I've heard great things about it.

madalynnellenaismommy20162018

MoMMyOf M&E&J 2016/2018/2021

@aengs2, I need to try and aeroflow to see if my insurance goes through with them it’s crazy that I didn’t know Insurance cover pumps with my first if I new lol

@aengs2, I heard a lot about the spectra I wonder if it is good to ?

Breast pump covered by insurance

Breast pump covered by insurance I've already done what I needed to find out what type of pump I get covered through insurance. It turns out, with my insurance, I can't even get my pump shipped to me until I call them with all the birth details of my baby. So...wth am I supposed to do having a baby and no pump?! I plan to pump exclusively and this REALLY throws a wrench in my plans.
