You can do it!!! I was able to quit cold turkey the day I found out I was pregnant with my son. It was hard but easier than I thought with the right motivation. I really liked eating ice whenever I had a craving. I started back after he was born though. I've tried to quit a couple of time since then but haven't been successful. But I'm trying to quit again now. This time I am going to try cutting back slowly.

Don't let him put you down. You can do it!

Regarding Chantix, several family members tried it about 8-10 years ago:

My sister-in-law took it the recommended time and quit. Hasn't smoked since.

My brother took it, got super... unmotivated? He had trouble convincing himself to do anything. Depression, I guess. He stopped after a week or two, but never smoked again and finds the smell of smoke disgusting.

My mom tried it, had the crazy dreams, felt depressed, and maybe quit for a week. Stopped taking the med after a couple weeks and still smokes.

Just be careful with that medicine. Best of luck in your endeavor!

Just do it. Make the decision. You have to really really want to quot, otherwise you will fail every time.

Cut back first. Give yourself 1 week and 1 week only. Get your self down to half of what you are used to smoking. Then when your week is up just do it.

Whenever you get a craving, do something good to occupy yourself until the craving subsides. It won't last forever. The craving will come and go throughout the day. Just get through it one craving at a time.

Even after you quit smoking you'll still miss the habit. Keep yourself into a positive mindset until it is no longer a habit for you.

Good luck.

Before my husband and I started trying to get pregnant,I quit smoking. From the time we started trying to the time I found out I was pregnant I had to figure out what part of the habit I needed or what was a trigger (if that makes sense) did I need something in my mouth? Did I need something in my hand? Was it strictly social? Was it coffee? Is it a glass of wine? Etc. for me it was something in my hand and a nice warm coffee. I started having tea in the morning for a couple weeks and then when I had that want for a smoke I would grab a pen or something I could hold in between my fingers like a smoke and watch tv or do something completely unrelated (luckily it was freezing outside at the time so it was nice staying warm lol). For whatever reason that really helped me! Be strong and think of how much better you will feel! Prove it to yourself first and then your husband will take notice! It's so much easier to quit for yourself rather than someone else!! Good luck!

Chantix works. I used it and after a week had no cravings at all. I didn't have any side affects either. Most insurances cover it because it's cheaper for you to quit smoking, then it is to treat medical problems from it.

Use his negativity for something positive.

Prove him wrong! When you feel like picking one up, think about him laughing in your face and saying I told you so.

I heard Wellbutrin works.

Stock up on regular gum. Chewing gum helped me. I also kept a pack of cigs in the house, but didn't smoke them. Knowing I had them nearby but that I was CHOOSING to not smoke them helped. Maybe it was a control thing for me...like I was controlling the urge rather than vice versa.

Good luck! Gut it out. You are stronger than you think.

Chantix. Is that the name of that pill that's on tv?

Someone said it gave you vivid dreams but that it really works.

I second e-cigs/vaporizers. DH used those and hasn't had a cigarette in over a year. He can also use juice with no nicotine without any issues. Just be sure to look up the amount of nicotine in each product before you use it; some have stupid high concentrations that will make you sick or keep you addicted.

For reference, DH smoked just under a pack a day and started with 16 mg/ml in a pen style vaporizer.

I quit several times and started again. I didn't quit for real until I just decided one day (no idea why) that I was done forever. It was mental for me. No patches, gum, etc. I just decided to finally do it after 10+ years and be done. I had to really want it for myself and not do it for others. Every time the craving came I just said you need to do this to prove you're strong. It was all for me and no one else. I felt like if I could do that I could do anything. It did so much for my self esteem.

Stay busy while you're building confidence. Have something else to do instead of smoking.

And consider getting a more supportive SO .... Also stay hydrated and try not to overthink it too much. Good luck!

ALSO, if you need to sleep/eat/cry/ or run a marathon to get through cravings just allow yourself to do whatever you need to do then move on.

My mother was a smoker for 30+ years. She quit because she had a huge scare from a doctor 8 years ago. They told her they had found a shadow on her lung and for her to prepare for the worst. I was with her when she had her last cigarette. The shadow turned out to be nothing but she hasn't touched one since. It hasn't been easy for her but a few things made it easier such as chewing and other things when she got a craving e.g chewing gum, pens..

She would also distract herself when a craving came on as well and try and get it out of her head.

There's all sorts pf help you can get from doctors and over the counter these days too like nicotine patches, e-cigs, gum that's specifically designed to combat cravings :) it's not easy from what i saw my mum go through she constantly wanted one for weeks but it does get easier with time :)

She has cravings waaaaay less often now.. Like once a month if that. Good luck :)

You have to be comitted. Its mind over matter really. Get rid of ash trays, stay away from other smokers, try the patch nicotine gum.
