19 kids & counting
So I had no idea they only allow their older children to text if they (the parents) are included in a group text. So they are allowed to see everything their children talk about with their boyfriend/girlfriends. And they are only allowed to have a private phone call for an hour each night.

I don't think that enforcing strict rules means you don't trust your children. Teenagers have a lot of hormonal changes that they may not always be able to control. (Heck, I'm 27 and pregnant and going through hormonal changes that I can't always control...hubby doesn't seem to mind...) Not allowing them to be in a position where they will be tempted (such as allowing them to be alone with bf/gf) can help them to remain level headed and avoid anything they'll later regret.
The Duggars are more strict than I would be. I personally probably wouldn't be THAT strict. I wouldn't have a problem with my children hugging their bf/gf or even maybe pecking on the cheek after they been dating a while and are older teens, but there's no reason that teens need to be completely alone unless they have intentions of doing something they wouldn't otherwise do in front of others.
As far as the phone stuff, I agree with Squishy. When they are old enough to get a job and pay for it themself, they are more than welcome to get one. Until then, they can use the house phone, JUST LIKE I HAD TO lol and having a cell phone will not imply that their conversations are any more private. Just like I wouldn't be secretive with my cell phone with them, I would expect an open and honest situation with their phone too.
I believe in giving your kids some privacy, but not to the point where I don't know what's going on. No, I'm not going to go snooping through my future teenage girl's diary, but you better believe I will enforce my right to look at her phone anytime I please.
