Supplementing

Just had my boys 6 month appointment. His weight went from the 50th percentile to the 16th. He asked if maybe my supply is low which I have no clue. I'm wondering if I should start supplementing. He has only gained a pound in two and a half

I just went and my boy also gained only a pound since last appt. I asked if that was bad and she said not at all. I ebf. She told me to start solids but didn't say it was because of the lack of weight gain.

My lo did the same thing went from 55(2months) to 36(4months) to 9(5 months).

I was told to start solids. But if your little guy is reaching milestones, happy, and active I see no cause for concern. Mine doesn't sit still so no wonder he doesn't gain weight. He hasn't even doubled birth weight yet at 6 months! Also if you and your husband are both thin/lean have trouble gaining it could be genetics.

My son is 6 months and only weighs 16 pounds. I exclusively breastfeed and the doctors didn't seem concerned.

My two year old was slow gaining weight. From 2 months to like 9 months, she only gained 3 lbs. Our doctor was never concerned, even though I expressed my concern. He said "does she seem happy?" And she was...she was always so happy. It really put my mind at ease and made me stop stressing out.

Both of my older kids weight gain slowed down between 6&9 months. That's when they start moving more. They are healthy 4 yo and 22month old. Dds growth seems to have slowed down recently too. She's got a well check next Friday so we'll see how much she has gained.

Something I have tried to increase my supply is pump for 10-15 min after baby eats. Even if not much comes out during the pumping session the stimulation tricks your body into thinking baby needs more milk so you produce more. It has worked for me very very well.

Great! You should be able to. Growth (weight) naturally slows down around six months, when they become more active. And one neat thing about breast milk is that it becomes richer and adjusts to their needs, so they don't necessarily need an increased volume (unlike formula), so don't get too hung up on amount. If you take fenugreek, you can even go up to three pills three times a day (you'll smell like maple syrup, and just watch to make sure it isn't upsetting your little guy's belly), or try blessed thistle, more milk plus, etc. breastfeed first every time, maybe offer an ounce or two of supplement after if he acts fussy/hungry. You could try to include a pumping session in the morning and supplement with that. You very well may catch up with him that way. And if he's not in a growth spurt, you may notice he won't want the supplement.

I've been taking fenugreek once a day so I'll probably up that to twice a day and I would still breastfeed every feeding but give a little extra afterward! I've always wanted to try and breastfeed till at least a year so I hope I can make that possible!

Please try to find a lactation consultant to speak with! They can help so much.

They can help by weighing your little one before and after feeds to get a sense of how much he's getting. They can also suggest pumping tactics and supplements to help boost/enrich your supply. True low supply is not that common! Chances are your little one's growth is slowing down naturally, or it is artificial based on measurements. Hard to say without more info. It does sound like a somewhat significant change in weight percentile, but you don't need to jump to supplementing right away. And if you do wind up supplementing, that's ok, too! There are ways to do that while still giving your little one as much breast milk as possible.

I agree with Diana, is your little one acting fussy/hungry? Listen to him, he'll tell you. Trust your instincts, Mama! Make sure you're eating enough calories (try oatmeal and/or lactation cookies) and drinking tons of water, too. Good luck!

He does fuss for a little bit after. He weighs 16 pounds and is 26.75 inches.

Does he seem cranky after nursing or does he cry a lot? If he seems totally happy I don't think your supply is low because my baby lets me know when she is still hungry. Also I heard they can stop gaining weight or slow down if they become very active! What is his weight and height?

Yesterday I went out with my boyfriend went to watch a movie, me and him don't live together yet. but point is yesterday when he was dropping me off his like sleep over at my house witch the mom and dad lives. I said no, his response was why is everyone deciding or making choices for you and their going to do the same with the baby, when I know that's not true. what he thinks is that my mom tells me not to sleep over. So he left all mad. and I felt in my heart that he went on and cheated on me and did something else with an other girl.... and it's 10:51 am now and he hasn't texted me at all. and after he dropped me off I texted him saying what I felt and nothing. I don't know if I'm over reacting or what or what should i do. do i wait until he text me?

@itsamemario, you deleted your post before I could hit send but this is my comment: I don’t know if this answers your question but this is my answer. My son is 7 and he knows race and color. Why? Because he himself comes from a family that is multi racial and because he has already experienced racism. I also believe as his mother it’s my job to teach him color and the cold hard truth about society. He knows what’s going on in this world. I’d be hurting him if I allowed him to blindly walk outside without this information. Children of color are being targeted and killed too. It’s not just adults. I let my son know we treat everyone equally and with respect. I let him know that we love everyone for their differences. In every aspect. Color, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual preference we love everyone.
