struggling with adhd

For any mom's with children struggling with adhd, I have found something that helps. I had been on adderall for a year, but when I got pregnant I had to stop. I'm not ebf and can't continue my medicine until I stop. I was struggling more recently. However, for lent I gave up fast food, candy, and soda. Since then I've had a much easier time managing my adhd. I'm not 100% but the diet change has helped. It's not a cure but it might help manage if you're for medication.

I will do more research on medicating/ not medicating. And more research on the gifted part. I was looking up first grade homework and my barely 5 yr old got 80% on it. I think that is a factor in his being bored with kindergarten work. Thanks for all the feedback and different perspectives I really appreciate it.

@ smoosie, look up gifted child like pp mentioned. They tend to have high responses to emotions.

I believe ADHD is highly linked to food we consume. Especially dye.

I took Adderall before pregnancy too. I don't know what it is, but I swear cutting out red dyes helped so much! As well as cutting out junk. I feel like I don't need meds anymore. Exercise helps a ton too.

@Smooshie, my youngest brother was like that as well, I was just talking about that with my parents about an hour ago.

Yes patients I have lots of. It is very hard mostly because of his odd. That's what gets him in trouble at school. I had a parent teacher conference yesterday due to his getting sent home 5 times in the last two weeks. His teacher said he is very very smart. She had to bring in 1st grade math because the kindergarten math was way to easy for him. He had things done on his evaluation papers that no other kid in class knew. He is just very disobedient and will not listen to an authority figure at all. He is bored, he acts out. He is angry, he acts out. He is happy, he acts out. Right now short of pulling my hair out I don't know what else to do.

I have ADHD so does my husband and we have 3 children with ADHD all 3 present differently. The first is angry (gets rages often), the second is emotional (cries when gets in trouble for her impulsive behaviour), the third is ADHD/ADD combined type with odd (she is just all over the place). We don't allow them to have much sugar (unless it's natural like fruit ect) and we watch for things that have tartrazine (dyes) and they are now medicated but only for school. I can say there is no real blanket approach with ADHD children as they are all so different and will respond differently to everything. I suggest trying different types of parenting styles to see what works for you and your family. I know my house gets quite hectic at times but it's always interesting and never gets boring lol :)

Besides patience and lots of it lol I advise keeping him occupied with activities that require he be present. That helps keep their mind from wandering which is what tends to get adhd sufferers in trouble. Make sure he gets the concerta at a pretty consistent time and whatever you do do NOT stop giving him the concerta unless the doctor okays it. Im sure you've already been advised of the medications side effects and the withdrawal. We've had one heckler of a struggle with our son since he was 2. He's almost 9 now and every day is still a challenge. Feel free to message me if you have more questions!

@ smooshie patience. The best thing my parents did was tell him I am adhd but that means I have to try harder, it's not an excuse to slack of. Repetition is another thing. I thrived with routine and consistency

I have add and have never taken meds, I just stay away from processed foods.and get plenty of excersize.:)

It helps tremendously.

When I was little my.mom would make me run around the house a few times every time I got distracted, it cleared my mind and helped me focus

The dyes are kind of controversial. Some doctors say that they cause certain people to get hyper and some say no. The dyes are just additives and have no nutritional value so we try to avoid it.

Thanks! Good to know! My boy hasn't been diagnosed, I think his is Tourette's. Runs in my family but Cant be diagnosed with that until he's older. ADHD, is one that goes with Tourette's . But trying to find different ways to help him without meds.

I'm down to 1 cup of coffee. I've never heard of the dye.

You could also try avoiding red dyes especially number 40. My son has adhd an we avoid refined sugar, caffeine, and certain dyes. He however, still has to take his medicine (concerta).
