Question for formula moms

How much do you spend a month on formula and what brand? I think the thought of spending the money is the biggest deterrent for me to switch. I do think breast milk is best but I also think formula is great since I was a formula baby. I'm just getting exhausted and frustrated with pumping all the time until we can get his tongue tie clipped and hoping that will fix his latching and sucking issues. They're taking forever to get me the referral. Gotta love Tricare.

My baby drinks similac pro sensitive. She loves it plus the website advertises that pro advance & pro sensitive are the closest formulas to breastmilk. If u sign up for similac strong moms online they will send you 3 nice sized sample cans for free & coupons!

My LO is drinking Enfamil Gentlease and it's $40 for the large box. She go through it in about a week. She's always hungry!

Exactly Shaina! As long as you tried! At the end of the day, you've got to make the decision that makes you a happier person so that you can be an energetic happy mum to your little one! I stopped breastfeeding because it made me unhappy and I didn't want him picking up on those vibes. Xxx

I just do regular similac advance! So far I've only gotten 2 tubs ($52 total) then I got 6 of the cans, they usually $20 for each one, but I got them all for $60 off some lady on swap & shop. So $112 & my daughter is a month old today.

My son has a tongue tie, too and getting the referral has been a nightmare with them being booked up at choc, too. It's frustrating and he's eating and gaining fine, but my nipples hurt so bad and he's swallowing extra air during feeds which i believe is causing him to get reflux . I'm not sure if I'm going to try to start pumping a lot more, or supplementing with formula. I'm just concerned about the money because I feel like once I start supplementing, my supply will die. It's so stressful exclusively breastfeeding. I feel like I'm barely holding it together to do what's best for this little one.

My daughter drink Similac Alimentum RTF and it costs $10.28 for 32 oz. she drinks 25-28 oz per day... So we spend roughly $300 monthly on formula.

@Bensmomma bottle feeding is a time for bonding for us too I think. He likes to hold onto my hand or to rub my hand/arm. But yes pumping is frustrating! I'm trying to power pump to build up my supply because right now it's just enough to feed him and freeze 2-3 oz here and there. I would probably make more if I wasn't always getting clogged ducts lol.

I remember reading about the putting the parts in the fridge, idk why I never did it. I have a handsfree bra and sometimes I will feed him at the same time but he prefers I hold him close when I bottle feed him.

@shaina - just wanted to offer a time saving tip since you mentioned pumping and washing pump parts in the middle of the night, you dont have to wash pump parts after every pump, just place them in the fridge between uses and wash once a day. I didnt know this when i was pumping with my first, what a time saver!

Baby's R Us and any general grocery store has great generic brands of Similac Advance ? my son has been on it since birth, and a huge tub at BRUs is $25. Makes about 80 4 oz bottles.

Kgoff, I hope it works out for us but if not at least I can say I tried! Just like you tried :) I was wanting to try Similac Pro-advance or pro-sensitive if I switch completely because i like how they have added immune system support but I will also have to be thrifty and choose what's best for him and budget.

Carly, your experience sounds a lot like mine! I was so determined to breast feed too. I'm still going to try to give it a go with the tongue tie clip but if that doesn't work out I'm going to start pumping less and more formula as well. It's so miserable to wake up in the middle of the night, change baby, feed baby, pump, and wash parts/bottles. I can't feel guilty if I tried to make it work at least.

Also, my son had a severe tongue tie. They told me he would do better after it was lasered and he did for a few days but then started cluster feeding like crazy. I switched over to formula completely. He is flourishing.

EMC3, I called today and the office told me they don't accept children under 12! What a mess. So I had to call Tricare back and they moved the referral to a group of 6 ENT doctors so hopefully one of them will have availability soon. I'm calling in an hour or so to give them time to process it. I'm so sorry you have to wait that long :( I hope things get better.

I use Similac optigro sensitive. Purchase the huge can at Sam's club for like $35 each. Right now he drinks 4oz bottles every 2-4 hours (he's a super hungry baby). He goes through a can (40oz of powder) every 7 or so days.

@shaina -- I just got my referral for ENT as well and they're booked out to 8/7/17! ? I hope yours moves faster. This baby is quickly turning into a colicky mess and won't even take a pumped bottle properly. ??#whyisthiscrapsohard

Shaina my little one had tongue tie too and breastfeeding was just horrific for me. Even when I got it clipped I was too traumatised and sore to carry on so I pumped less and less until my milk dried up and now he's solely on formula.

I'm gutted that breastfeeding didn't work out for me but I'm so much happier now that my boobs are small and soft again and I can wear whatever I want. I'm not leaking and stinking everywhere and I feel like I can enjoy him more.

I'm from the UK, I use Aptamil and I spend about £10 a week on formula. All worth it to keep my sanity and happiness!

I finally got the referral letter in the mail for an ENT doctor out in town so maybe I can get his tongue tie taken care of and we will try nursing again. I'm so sick of having clogged ducts and now I have milk blebs. So painful.

@ Bens mom. That's a great price. 48 oz of formula that's about 300 oz of made formula. Which is about 10-12 days. Great price.

The Gentlease is $37 at my target for 22oz.

With how she's going through right now im looking at spending about $150+ on formula a month getting it at special price of $30 a can.

He's done great with Enfamil Gentlease as a supplement. I don't need supplementation anymore really but I sometimes still give him a bottle at night and just pump to make up for it. He sleeps a little longer with formula lol. But if I do make the switch I wouldn't mind trying out cheaper brands like Kirklands to see how he responds. I don't know how long it will take for my child support to come in since dad is deployed and won't be back until next month. Being a single mom makes the budget tight.

Shaina, I would call your CDC and ask but at base in CO, they definitely did! I didn't do formula with my last kiddo so that was about 7 years ago.

We have used Kirklands brand (Costco- Generic Similac option) which has worked for us... I also have some friends that use Member's Mark Brand (Sams Club- Generic Enfamil option ) that have had great luck.

You can read reviews and see pricing on their websites.

I feed my son enfamil gentle ease and it's 33$ for a tub and 50 for a 2 pack of the tub refills and he goes through a tub about every 6-7 days

With some smart shopping and looking around we are at $100 a month for Enfamil Gentlease.

A large tub lasts us about 5 days and retails for $37. But we bought of eBay and look at your local Facebook Marketplace. People offer their samples for free and sometimes sell unopened cans they have leftover for half the price.

We also traded our unopened samples of Similac for Gentlease.

It requires some planning and working but I think it's worth it. We have little over 2 months of formula stocked and spend exactly $205 for that amount.

Tricare is the WORST!!!! I hound them when they don't get back to me. I used to work in the med group before I cross trained so I know it doesn't take that long for a referral. For me, formula wasn't that expensive since I pumped a ton, especially when going back to work. For a couple of months, my girls would drink the formula provided by the CDC and nurse/drink expressed milk at home. When I got my milk stash up, I would send milk to daycare. So I would MAYBE go though a can or 2 a month. It's not better than free but it wasn't more than $50 a month or so.

Yesterday I went out with my boyfriend went to watch a movie, me and him don't live together yet. but point is yesterday when he was dropping me off his like sleep over at my house witch the mom and dad lives. I said no, his response was why is everyone deciding or making choices for you and their going to do the same with the baby, when I know that's not true. what he thinks is that my mom tells me not to sleep over. So he left all mad. and I felt in my heart that he went on and cheated on me and did something else with an other girl.... and it's 10:51 am now and he hasn't texted me at all. and after he dropped me off I texted him saying what I felt and nothing. I don't know if I'm over reacting or what or what should i do. do i wait until he text me?
