Induction

Now, I doubt I will need to be induced. But it's still my fear that I will need to be because of an emergency or if I go too far past my due date. My question is, has anyone ever been induced and been able to do the rest med free? All I hear is horror stories from induction that end in back labor, or contractions so painful and long that the mom needs an epi and sometimes C sections. My goal is med free but I realize that things can change.

I've been induced 5 times. All due to preeclampsia. Ive had no problems until my 4th when my epidural became disconnected.

I had back labor with my 1st son (natural) and no back labor with my 2nd son (induction)

The thing about inductions is the pain goes straight to a 10 and stays there until you give birth - with natural labours your body takes time to build from a 1 to a 10 - 10 being the worst pain and is only when you are almost at full dilation and ready to push - because with natural labours your body has time to respond with the appropriate amount of beta endorphin (the body's natural pain relief) it doesn't seem as bad - but when you are induced you don't have time for the body to react with this natural pain reliever - this is why it is known to be so painful!

So with this in mind when I had my son I was so scared of being induced - but had to be because there was meconium in my waters and I was only 1cm dilated. I just took the epidural straight away - as it turned out the epidural failed - and i remember it being very sore - but an exhausting type of sore - if someone had been able to give me a time that I'd be done I think I could have done it med free - but because there's no way of knowing I was panicky - so I took some of the diamorphine - which definitely helped take the edge off!

I'm praying so hard that I don't have to be induced this time because like you I want a med free birth ❤️ fingers crossed for us! But don't be ashamed of taking what's on offer - the main thing is you and baby are happy and healthy and have a safe delivery ? xxx

@Shaina... I went in for contractions, they did a swab for my water breaking it came back positive so they did another one to double check moved me into labor and delivery my doctor came in and was like we might as well pop the water all the way, and literally 2 min after he did it the hospital nurse came in saying it was a false positive my water didnt break it was actually semen, and at that point it was to late so they gave me pitocin.

I'm like you. Ftm and I really want to go natural and I REALLY don't want to be induced. I hear stories about how drs induce just bc you are past your due date, well I want more of a reason than that if I get induced. I've already decided I'm 90 percent sure I'm going to get an epidural if I get induced. While I want a natural birthing experience my ultimate goal is to have a good birthing experience and of everything I've heard induction makes your labor a lot worse and I'm pretty stubborn when it comes to pain so I'm afraid that will get in the way of making the right decision. But that's where I'm at. Hoping both of us can have our natural birth tho, we can do it :)

Thanks for sharing your stories! Don't know why I'm so worried about this. I guess as time gets closer it becomes more of a reality that anything can happen or go wrong. Praying for an easy, smooth birth that is as close to our birth plans as possible for all of us!

My induction was great. I had the option to go med free once my Water broke but I opted for the epi because I had already been in labor for 13 hours. Induction isn't always bad. All that matters is our babies get here safely. Everything will be okay, I'm sure your birth plan will go as planned because you are at least thinking about other options.

I was going in for an induction and my body ended up starting itself after I got to the hospital! Hoping it happens this way as well. My hospital doesn't allow inductions unless it's truly medically necessary until you are at least 41 weeks. I went a week past my due date with my first. I'm curious to see what happens with this one. Everyone says you don't want pit that it's awful! So hoping my body does this again.

Now I am anti pitocin unless absolutely necessary. Before I am given pitocin my contractions are like period cramps but after the pain can become unbearable.

For two of my children's births I was given pitocin which is sometimes used for inductions. I was given pitocin to make contractions stronger and speed up dilation. I felt like I was progressing fine but at the time I had a doctor and not a midwife who felt I wasn't and once the pitocin is given my contractions hurt a lot but by the time I could even think about pain meds it was time to push. So I have been "induced" twice with no pain meds.

I was induced with my first for oligo and the first few hours of labor weren't bad but once the pitocin was started, contractions become unbearable. They gave me demerol but I immediately threw up as the nurse was still pushing it in my IV line. It didn't help at all. I remember telling my mom in tears that they couldn't let me suffer like this any longer because the anesthesiologist was taking a while to arrive. I was only at 4cm then. Once I got the epi, I slept for the first time and progressed quickly. I had to watch my monitor for contractions because I couldn't feel a thing. It was honestly the best decision to get the epi because I would have been physically unable to deliver as easy as I did with the pain level I had. It was exhausting and worse than I ever imagined.

I'm praying that I don't have to be induced this time so labor isn't as intense. We shall see...

Well I didn't do it naturally but I've been induced both times. And got an epidural. My first I went in at 12am didn't get the epidural until 1pm, pushed for over an hour (he was looking up so the back labor was God awful! ) he was born at 6:59pm.

My second they started the pitocin at 730am, got epidural at 11:30am and at 2:30pm she was born after 3 easy pushes. I slept through all the laboring, no pain felt what so ever and I was up walking around within 3 hours with both afterward.

Perla, I'm sure you will do great if you go into labor on your own! I understand wanting an easy experience though, I've thought about how I would want to look pretty after giving birth but I know that's not going to happen with an all natural birth. I've accepted it lol.

Mrs. Bowers, how were you induced by accident?

Mommymaile, I feel like that's the common story with inductions! The epidurals being needed because of exhaustion from long labor.

I was induced for both my babies. My doctor induced bc I'm so petite and he didn't want me to be miserable. So I got induced at 38wks.. now there's a law saying mother cannot be induced any earlier than 39wks, UNLESS there's a legit medical/health issue. And I'm so scared to go into labor on my own. ?. With my last two it was scheduled ahead of time. With my first I waited until I couldn't take the pain any longer. And my second, I got it as soon as I could. I was very relaxed and well rested, I even asked for a mirror so I can see my daughter coming out..

Both my inductions took over 40 hours from start of cytotech, to pitocin, to birth. So my body pretty much won't be told what to do. I did end up with epidurals just out of sheer exhaustion. But the epidurals were done at like hour 37.

My water broke on its own with my second but I wasn't progressing at all so they gave me the meds to get me dilating. It sucked but I had her completely pain medication free all 9lbs 9oz 22 3/4" of her :)

I was induced and I had a all natural birth. I can say that the back labor was horrible, but bearable! I honestly didn't even really feel contraction because the back pain was so intense! You have to go in with the mindset that you can do it! ?

Pchamp87, I agree! My friend was induced a day past her due date because of her GD. And she had back labor and was in labor for 43 hours. The doctor told her she needed the epi to relax and get some rest if she wanted to deliver vaginally. So I know I can plan on not getting one but sh*t happens. But I think induction should be avoided at all costs if possible. It usually just leads you down a path to more meds and possibly C section.

I'm also very nervous my Doc. Will start pushing for an induction if I go past my due date. I really really want my body to decide for itself when it's ready. I don't hardly see any positives from having an induction, especially if it's already a low risk pregnancy.

I'm trying to keep an open mindset, but I am still scared of things not going my way. I'm sure in the end I will just be happy he's here. But I want the full, natural experience so bad.

My induction was what you described...

Induced on Wednesday night and she was born on Friday afternoon via csec. These contractions are harder than med free contractions and many didn't give me recovery time. To make matters even more painful, I didn't get an epi until Friday morning so it was just so much pain for so long.

My induction was pretty painful as a ftm not having any experience.. I had gas and air (uk) and diamorphine which didn't really kick in in time as Baby was born. Labour lasted around 12 hours and contractions were very painful ? but I only pushed for 5 minutes and he was out!

My water broke on Friday morning at 2 am . There was meconium so I had to go into the hospital right away. Turned out I was only a finger tip dilated and think and high. Meaning my cervix wasn't really ready . They then basically induced me to get things moving . I went 24 hours without any pain relief methods. I had a dual with me and really wanted a medication free labor . After 24 hours I was only 1cm !! So I got a epidural. It allowed me to relax and get some rest . Honestly I think in my case it helped me out . It took another 24 hours to get to 10cm. By that time the epidural wore off, so I still felt everything. And that's what I wanted .

My best advice is just go with . Happy and healthy Mama and baby is all that matters . I am going for no medication this time around, so excited about it .

My induction ended in a c-section but I also had an over sized baby that was stubborn and never engaged to dilate me.

As someone who has had a natural birth and a medically induced birth, I can't possibly understand what the appeal is in being induced. Especially if you haven't even hit 40 weeks yet. I was induced on the exact day I turned 43 weeks with my 2nd child. The only reason I was induced was because I was 43 weeks and not dilated, not effaced, and my cervix was hard as a rock. I'm here to tell you induction is not a walk in the park. Inductions tend to be longer. My first labor was 6 hours, induction was 16 hours. Inductions end in c-sections a lot because the pitocin makes your contractions so strong, it can put the baby into fetal distress. So, I can't understand asking for an induction if you don't MEDICALLY NEED one.
