5 year old dd

I'm getting very frustrated and don't know what to do. I've had her screened at a learning center where they did some testing for like an hour long. She had to get 3 wrong in a row before they stopped. Basically they said she screened at a 7-8 year old child. I can't get her to learn her letters. I've gotten so frustrated, I've put letters in the wall, she has them on a big mat where she can stand, I've gotten games for her, writing, reward games. And she still won't learn them. I notice she confuses the letters that sound the same like D,T,P, or S,X. Any advice? What else can I do?

What about using the letters in real life situations, i learned because i wanted to read the titles on my vcr tapes, im way old. Like asking her what she wants for dinner and teaching her to spell it or dessert. The idea of letters may be too abstract for her if she cant relate it to something.

I used Children Learning Reading. It is a program that I learned about on YouTube then ordered. My son started reading(not memorizing word shapes) at 3 using the program. He could see his own progress so he enjoyed doing the program. He knows uppercase and lowercase letters and sounds. He confuses lowercase b and d as well as p and q occasionally.

Ivy is three and speak delayed so I like to do a lot of one word games to get her speaking. One of the games we play she calls "ABC game" basically letters for the fridge and we line them all up and then she take them off one at a time and gives them to me. As she gives them too me I ask her what one she has. She then either tries to answer or if she seems stuck I step in and say "that a C" and I have her repeat C back to me. If she tries and gets it right we get excited and clap. If she gets it wrong then I act the same way I would if she got stuck and couldn't answer, but I still keep the tone very light and happy to keep it fun. Doing it out of order actually seems to help a lot. She knows all her letters but mixes up the ones that are similar. I feel like repetition is key. Don't worry mama, I'm sure your little one just needs to play around a little more and explore the letters. Learning the alphabet it actually really tricky. Especially when you're only five. Are teachers worried?

My dd has a very hard time recognizing letters too . She knows a lot of their sounds but not the letter name. I'm not going to worry yet though since she is only starting kindergarten in the fall. Learning in a school setting may be different than at home.

Also , when we did an early school learning program, they drilled into our heads that we should teach lower case first since when they are reading only the first letter of a sentence is capitalized and the rest are usually lowercase.

How about metallic letters on a board? That's how my little one is learning. She's only 5 though, make it fun. Don't show your frustration or stress. It's fine if she learns slowly. Concentrate on one letter at a time. Maybe do 2 letters per week, like A and B. Go slowly; she might just need more time.

She's only 5. Honestly, I would take a break from it. She's too young for drills. I suspect she knows more than she's letting on, but it might be starting to cross over into a power struggle. Taking some time way from it might help her come around.

I would try matching games. (Tons on Pinterest but I can send some links). So give her a pile of letters and a way to sort. (One way I've seen is a muffin tin labeled with the letters). Point out the P and ask her to find a P to match in the pile. That would probably help. There are also a number of worksheets focused on each letter on Pinterest that you could print and it asks them to find the correct letters on the page.

One of my student teachers did a similar activity with an alphabet mat and magnet letters in a rice bin with the matching. It worked well. I would try to focus on certain letters at a time and not all of them. Perhaps even focus on letters in her name or family members names first.

I'm working before school starts and doing uppercase.

Are you working on uppercase and lowercase or just one? Upper case is generally taught first in school.

Are you homeschooling or just working before school starts?

@xaviers they screened her for that too and said she was fine. She did have speech therapy before though.

All I can think of is getting her speech therapy. Not sure if her learning center helps with that?

You're trying to get her to recognize them? Or write them? Or say the sound? Or all three?

Personally, if there is nothing wrong. I would just say practice practice practice. She's only five, it takes time ? what's only a little issue for us is such a big issue to children. My daughter is five also, but gets confused with j and g. And c and k. Letters that can make the same sound, just sound different in different words! Good luck!

I was in speech therapy for long time at that age. I had problems with everything you described.

is it wrong to be frustrated that my daughter acts like she can't do certain things with out my help. she plays dumb a lot and I wish I could be like no girl show what you know. she acts like she can't trace or match shapes so shes ask for "mommy finger" to help her so I barely hold her hand and she magically can do it but if I dont hold her hand she just scribbles and acts like she doesnt know the pic is how she traces when I'm "helping her" otherwise it'll just be scribbles all over the page

Dad's FB Video!! Did anyone see that video a dad posted on his daughters FB page? He saw a post she made where she bashed her parents and cursed them, called them lazy and told them they should pay her for stuff she did around the house... So he called her out on it and put the video on her page!! Sorry if I missed a post already about this already, but I just saw the video and IT WAS AWESOME!!! Hahahhaa!

FTM problems... So I've made it pretty clear that I want to buy my daughter her fist Halloween costume. Her babysitter/nanny keeps saying she wanted to make her one. I told her yesterday that I wanted to find her something that my SO and I could dress up as a family. So I told her I am going to get it. She just text me and said 'not trying to step on your toes but I bought her two costumes'. She does this all the time. Anytime I want to do the "first" things with her she immediately does it. It's making me sad. Like I wish I could quit my job and be home with her.

Tell me if I'm wrong here.

Tell me if I'm wrong here. My husband's sil has covid. She's obviously quarantining in her house but is still loving on her kids and husband. I'm sorry but if I had it I would lock myself in a room. She hasn't gotten her kids tested... they're obviously doing the whole remote learning and quarantining for two weeks but she plans to send them back without testing them on the Monday after Thanksgiving 😬😱. My husband thinks I'm overreacting but I told him I don't want to see them on Christmas. I'm in the middle of iui cycles and don't want to risk this. Besides I don't think I could sit in a room with her knowing how irresponsible she has been not only with her family's health but those that are coming into contact with her and her family.
