Shingles- know the facts

Shingles- know the facts

Shingles is caused by chicken pox. If you have been vaccinated or have never had chicken pox then you will never get shingles. Residual chicken pox virus lives dormant in the nerve cells closest to the brain and spine. Later in life it can "reactivate" and spread up the nerve to the skin. It will affect only one half of the body at a time. It will look like chicken pox, but it will hurt, not itch. It is unbelievably painful! If you get a blister near your eye it can cause vision loss. It is usually triggered by a weakened immune system or stress. It is only contagious to those that have not been vaccinated AND have never had chicken pox. It doesn't matter to me if your kids are vaccinated or not. Mine are, so they are safe. I just want to make sure that you know the facts about what you are subjecting your children to later in life if you choose not to vaccinate for chicken pox. This concludes my public service announcement. Have a good day!

Jenn, it is very possible to miss the symptoms if it is a mild case. It would look like a few ant bites. He had chicken pox at some point in his life.

None of his siblings had it either. His mom is a nurse and I'm sure she would recognize chicken pox.

I had the chicken pox vaccine and STILL got chicken pox.

My nephew was vaccinated for chicken pox and he got shingles (not around the same time frame but still).

Booster shots are probably necessary. As I said earlier. I also said that the vaccine protects against the MOST COMMON strain of chicken pox.

except chicken pox is deadly in adults, where shingles is not. if u miss a vaccination then what? I'd rather my kid have 1 week of the itchies than a whole life of shots.

Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus(chicken pox). It is also known as herpes zoster. But it is NOT related to the herpes viruses that cause cold sores or genital herpes.

Then your husband is a medical miracle. Like op said, he may have had a case of chicken pox that went without notice, but you cannot have one without the other. I'm not trying to be mean, but I know for a fact it is how it works.

Jenn. I really wish you would stop spreading false info!!! He had to have had an undiagnosed case of chicken pox as a child. That is a much more likely explanation than shingles appearing on him out of thin air!!! Do your research!!!

Wow. I'm sorry Leslie. I would have picked you! I got shingles while I was nursing my baby. Putting him against me was the most excruciating pain I have ever felt! And I've gone through labor with 2 babies!

The whole virus attacked my eye! Been seeing an eye dic since 4. Lifetime regime of drops, ointments, steroids, and surgeries (cornea transplants).

I forgot to add in my other reply, I also had to wear a patch on my eye in school during elementary years and at home til I was 18. Yea, def got made fun of as a kid for that too. Kids are cruel. No one wants to pick the girl with an eye patch for their dodgeball team LOL

You can get chicken pox as an adult if you have never had it before, but you can only get shingles if you have the chicken pox virus in your system. Not everyone that had chicken pox will get shingles, but it is more common in the elderly. My family gets it early for some reason. I had it at 31. My mom got shingles at 49 and my cousin at 20.

It's NOT possible to have shingles without chicken pox. Chances are your husband had a very mild case of chicken pox as a child that went undiagnosed. And the vaccine is relatively new, so they are now discovering that booster shots may be necessary. The vaccine given in childhood will not protect an adult today. Also, the vaccine is made for the most common strain of the virus. There are other much less common strains that wouldn't be covered by the vaccine. Anyone else...

Hmmm I was always taught if you didn't get the pox as a kid, you were prone to shingles as an adult.

Ответить

You can imagine his surprise when he got shingles. He was always worried about getting chicken pox as an adult and he got shingles instead.

How do you explain my husband then? He had shingles but he's never had chicken pox or had the vaccine and he got shingles. It is unlikely but obviously possible.

They think he was exposed enough to have the immunity but not actually get the chicken pox. Otherwise the Drs don't have an answer.
