Not pooping on the potty

My son was 3 in November he's been potty trained (pee) for almost a year now (he still wears pull-ups to bed sometimes he's dry other times he's not) anyway he never has accidents during the day ever. But he won't poop in the potty. He poops in pull-ups. When he has to poop he asks for a pull-up I ask if he wants to poop on the potty and he always says no. So I put the pull-up on him cause I want him to poop. How do I get him to ditch the pull-ups and poop in the potty?!?! Please help

My ds did the exact thing. 2 weeks before his 3rd bday, I stayed home from work to work on this issue. I told him no more pull-ups for poops. He held his poop in for 3 days & then he finally did it on the potty & got his M&Ms. No issues after that. Sometimes, I think it's a battle of wills.

Thanks I guess I'll just keep talking about pooping on the potty and one day he will get there. In no way shape or form have I ever shamed him because he poops in the pull-up. When he asks for a pull-up I simply say do u wanna try pooping on potty. He says no thanks so I put the pull-up on him and he goes. I'll just keep talking about it and when he's ready he will do it. Thanks for the responses ladies

My friends son was like that he was 5 and still not popping in the potty the pediatrician recommended not putting on a pull-up and to give him fiber or apple juice/prune juice if he held it in to avoid constipation and force him to go it worked for her since he really wasn't able to hold it this time like he normally would

My oldest is 5 and has the same situation. So he got his own pull up & put it on himself & he had to stay in the bathroom to poop. In the spring he turned 4 so I decided that when pre school was over he was going to work in going in the potty over the summer. So I told him that when the pull ups ran out he wasn't getting anymore and he would have to go in the potty. Honestly, he held it in for a week. I was so worried. But I truthfully didn't have any pull ups in the house. By the end of the week I felt so bad that I bought some and told him he could go in one but he refused! The next day he went in the potty but he wanted complete privacy. I left him alone. And there was so much poop in the potty. The next couple days he wanted to poop in the potty but wanted me there to comfort him (it takes a while to get used to the feeling I guess). And I did have to help with his penis. Now he goes all by himself but still needs help with wiping and I'm trying to work with him in night time training. The best advice I can give is lots of patience & lots of talking & preparing ahead of time if you're going to take pull ups away. My 3 year old is following in the same footsteps-pee trained but no poop. It frustrates my husband but it just takes lots of patience. And have him be in the bathroom when you poop too and let him watch it go down the toilet.

With my son I just had to wait it out, some kids are weird about pooping. Finally before his 5th birthday I told him he was a big boy and he had to start pooping in the toilet because 5 yr olds don't poop in their underwear. It actually worked, he's only had a couple accidents since then

Eta- DO NOT force him to poop on the toilet, with kids like that it doesn't work. They can stretch out their colon and create life long digestive issues. Also, shaming him for it will create psychological and trust issues that will only make it harder. Love and patience is the ONLY thing that will work

As a mom of a child who developed a psychological issue around pooping, my advice is to not force the issue! Dd ended up refusing to poop at all, potty or diaper. She would withhold it with all her might. She did this for about a year, it was awful! She was also fully potty trained with peeing during this time. One magical day, while she was peeing on the potty she pooped as well and has been popping on the potty ever since. Just wait till he is comfortable, he will get there!

I thought about not putting a pull-up on. My husband did that once then he refused to poop and got constipated to the point we had to give him a suppository. I talked with his dr about it and she said some kids are just like that they are afraid to poop on the potty. That one day he will use the potty. I just feel like it's a little ridiculous at this point. Thanks for the advice I'm gonna just make him use his potty next time and see what happens

When he asks for a pull up, don't give it to him. Take him into the bathroom and sit there with him for however long it takes. You're enabling him by giving him a pull up when he asks for one when he has to poop. It took my son a while to poop on the potty too, but I used to bring his training potty out to where we all were and he would sit there until he pooped but wouldn't be isolated from everyone else. Once he consistently pooped on his potty, then it was to stay in the bathroom at all times. Now he's a pro. Good luck to you!
