Squishy, can you pm me the persons info? Even general website. I know a lot of people in my area were looking into getting meat and such like this. We have two vendors at our weekly farmers market but this might work for the rest of the yr.

I was wondering. We have the same deep freeze and had a chance to buy half of a grass-fed, organic cow for $3.89 a pound, prepared! But we passed because we thought it wouldn't fit. Maybe we'll try to get in if it's not too late.

We eat almost exclusively beef and buffalo. Chicken grosses me out and it's hard to find uncontaminated fish.

I'm sure there are co-ops? We found the farmer through a family at school and he has his own butcher he takes it to and we pick it up.

Is there anyway to find something like this in my area? Is this like a co-OP? I would love to...

We eat canned sardines and tuna, plus frozen Alaskan salmon. So it's not too bad. During the summer we pig out of fresh wild salmon as long as we can get it. Costco sells it for $8/lb. The buffalo I get shipped from North Dakota. There's a huge local meat thing going on here, which I love, but it's super expensive.

And the cuts it really depends on us. We get to choose what we want. Last time I asked for lots of stew cuts because we wanted to use for soups and kabobs. But we usually ask for lots if stakes too

I'm in Canada, and we get the cow from a farm/slaughter place. We usually get about 300ish pounds of meat, and we pay more or less $1000. We've been doing this for 5 years already and because we always return with more clients to them, they usually give us a discount or throw in some extra treats such as beef and turkey pepperoni, eggs, and some stakes. And because they are not to close and not easy access we go every summer. So the meat lasts from summer to summer. Right now we are running low. We have stuff for BBQ and lamb. We will be ordering again by June. My husband gets to go there and choose the cow and lamb.

I would LOVE to order buffalo instead, but there isn't anywhere local we can do that. We eat other things too, but we'll be eating mainly beef for at least 1 but probably 2 meals a day. Plus BBQs since it's getting nicer out. Fish is sooooooooooo expensive here that we rarely buy it. Maybe once a month do we eat fish at home (I love sushi). Some chicken and pork, generally I get ground turkey for meals calling for ground meat...but I'll just use ground beef instead now since I have all this beef. It'll be nice to have half of a pig plus the beef. I wish the husband liked lamb so I could get a lamb. They had those....and a rack of lamb if I go to Costo is like $100!

Wow, I can't imagine eating all that meat! 2lbs for 6 people is still almost 2 servings of meat per person. And every day? I don't even know how is manage to cook that much meat constantly. Seriously, how do you all cook that much beef?

I order buffalo instead of beef. I got 17 pounds recently and that will probably last my small family 4-6 months. But we also eat some chicken, fish, and a little pork.

My husbands parents are farmers in Iowa we live in florida. Twice a year they drive down with a quarter of a cow packed in dry ice for us. I think our freezer is more square then yours and it is always filled almost to the top with the 1/4. I showed my husband the pic he says it looked like a smaller cow. Ask for a fat cow next time lol!

My parent bought a full cow and it was around $1700 that lasts a year. They eat beef 6/7 days a week at least! I couldn't tell you how many lbs but they got like 40 some roasts! That's for 2 people.

@charlies definitely not! I'm just saying, that's how much meat we eat total. Doesn't matter what it is. My family would get 100 meals out of this freezer, but squishy's is double the size.

We'll be eating beef at least 1 meal everyday...probably 2! Lol I can't wait to get a pig. All the bacon I'm going to eat.

Ответить

@wishing you eat beef for dinner every single day?

Ответить

We're a family of three, and eat about 2lbs of meat per dinner. So double that, 4lbs per meal, 200 lbs would last us 50 meals.

It really depends on the individual cow and its size. We slaughtered our pet cow Delilah and gave half to my mom. It filled our 7 cubic ft freezer. We got a really large chest freezer for our pigs and lamb so it'll all fit. We raise pigs and sheep and some cows and sell them all locally. They're the closest thing you can get to organic and its very very cost effective for everyone. I sell my pigs at a flat rate of $150 even though we could easily make more off them. I like the idea of good food being affordable for everyone. We send them to butcher at 200 lbs plus. The butcher charges 60 cents a lb and a $40 kill fee. It ends up being much cheaper and is so much tastier and healthier.

Lol my family eats beef maybe once every other month. My kids only eat chicken and occasionally turkey. I'm a vegetarian so I have no idea how to cook any kind of meat for my hubby or my kids.

MS.....um I dunno? We ended up with like 4 briskets (3 lbs each), 4 roasts (4 lbs each) 6 flank steaks, something called an arm roast (no idea what that is), a bunch of steaks and 10 lbs of ground beef I think? I dunno my DH did all the ordering...but I think I will next time because I want some things he didn't get.

Paris.....we go to a local farmer for the cow and he brings it to a local butcher after slaughter for processing. It's 100% grass fed organic! no antibiotics or growth hormones beef

I too, like MSAnderson, am interested in some prices-I know they may vary in different states but a ballpark figure will help me get an idea. I even have gone to surf the net to find a local butcher in my area.

The pig sounds good though! I love some BBQ or carnitas like pp said.

We buy a whole cow once a year. We are a family of 6 soon to be 7. Much cheaper then buying beef through the store.

Ответить

We do this too. We buy meat once a year only. The first year we got a quarter cow and a half lamb and didn't last long. Now we buy a half cow and a whole lamb. It really lasts a year for us. The cool thing is that we get to customize the cuts (the amount of ground beef, beef stew, pieces to roast, stake etc). We also get sausage, pepperoni, and parties for BBQ summer time. I don't eat pork, so lamb it is
