I found that what worked for my son is that while we're already at the airport and getting ready for the flight, I try to keep him awake and active and I try not to feed or breastfeed him in that 2-3 hour timespan. Right when the plan speeds down the lane and lifts into the sky, that's when I breastfeed him. He nurses and immediately goes to sleep and during the flight, I and everyone on the flight doesn't have to worry about a crying and fussy baby. Nursing also helps pop his ears right when we get to the sky, too.

What have you found is your "secret" to making a happy and fuss-free baby while you travel? Did you let your son crawl around the airport when he was a baby (I haven't done it yet but I figure that if I sanitize my son's hands afterwards it would be alright but I don't know because it's the airport and they're gross)?

@evonne, if you wanna be a flight attendant be prepared to be away from your kids for a while cause I use to be one before I had my son and it was hard.

@awilder7, both of my sons did not do well in a traditional infant car seat, but when we took the plunge and bought the big transition car seats that go from infancy all the way to 60lbs, it made a HUGE difference! There is tons more cushion in these seats. You may want to look into that. Really! Night and day difference!

@mommywifelifestyle, ok yea we have the donna it's a carseat and a stroller n one so it's very very compact but we have considered getting a mcclaren umbrella just bc we have heard good things and now it gets pretty hot for baby to sit in the car seat with all the padding for the normal long outing like the park etc. as for the toiletries well I need those things with me bc we use cloth wipes so I use a bottom spray and a water bottle at each change. I know I can refill the water once I'm past check point and plan to do that but I hope to take the spray and cream along n diaper bag. So I know I can take one just wonder if they charge for a second. I will give them a call. We got economy car so hopefully it's nice we're just used to a roomy space now that's all so in a car it feels so cramped. Thanks for the info

@txyogagirl You would need to double check with them I know I checked the stroller at the gate and car seat at check in but have flown different airlines and they have different stipulations regarding them. I have taken an infant car seat and another car seat and both fit in the cars I usually get economy. Depending on size you would want those in your checked luggage as not to deal with the hassle of security and having wrong sizes.

@mommywifelifestyle, we just booked our first vacation with our 8m old son we didn't purchase him a seat and got a direct flight. 3 hr I called and was told about the car seat. So what ur saying is a car seat and a stroller can be checked at the gate for free. We're flying American. My husband is nervous about the rental car bc they a usually a cheap quality car and small we won't know what car until we arrive at our destination to pick it up. We cloth diaper so we will have extra bags bc of that. So his soaps creams etc can I take all that? He doesn't eat table food so no worries there. But he may have snacks by then 9m.

@jen95 I actually just took same distance drive from Texas to Louisiana. Bring snacks, toys, try buying two or three new ones plus their favorite, bring a cooler for cold water unless plan to stop to refill their sippy cup. My son basically played most of the way then napped at his usual naptime. We also stopped for lunch and went in to eat and let him walk around to stretch his legs.

We are driving 6-7 hours from Louisiana to Florida in July for our wedding. What are some tips for such a long car ride with a 13 month old?

@smilingwithmyawesome4kids Also flying at night and early in the morning had the least amount of people on each flight I have been on during the day there are more people and are more crowded. Try going at naptime if you do fly during the day that way they are sure to sleep through the flight.

@smilingwithmyawesome4kids I found flying with a baby was easier then with a toddler. They are a lot easier to entertain versus a toddler who wants to explore. Really it just depends on you I flew with me son at 4 months since he had his shots. I do not recommend before shots though as airports are filled with all kinds of things

@rhomiilove412 if they are under 2 they do not have to. They can ride in your lap.

@awilder7 sit in the back seat with him if you can or your spouse. That way you can entertain him if you need to. I prefer traveling during bedtime since my son will sleep majority of the time if I do. Really distraction is key. When you stop to get gas even though only takes a few minutes get him out and walk around outside that will help so he is not restrained constantly. Then plan to take some long breaks. When you are hungry instead of going through drive through go inside.

@muva_of_2 they have to be in your lap. You can purchase a separate seat (I wouldn't waste the money)but then have to bring their car seat on and it has to meet certain height requirements as some seats are small.

@muva_of_2 I would wait till she at least has her shots.

@cschwartz2010 I always make sure to bring toys, snacks, and sippy cup. Bring extra clothes since accidents do happen. Also don't stress if don't bring enough wipes or diapers you can always buy them. We actually just bring enough to get us to our location then purchase some when we get there so don't have to bring as much stuff. Don't forget your stroller I made that mistake once when we went to Las Vegas yikes. It's also a good idea to bring 2 or 3 new toys as that way they are interested in trying the new toy out versus getting bored with her same toys.
