That's kind of unfair, I can agree with that. It's not like it's an iPad that YOU bought and are allowing them to use, they're being forced to use it..yeah I don't know if you should be responsible for it exactly, cause iPads are not cheap, even the least expensive model is up around $5-600. If he doesn't have to do homework on it id say every time he gets home take it out of his backpack and put it up high somewhere

@emkasting, I know they would be for learning but I don't understand why he would have to bring it home. That im not comfortable with since I have a monster one year old who touches everything lol. That's what I mean by I'm unsure what they will do on it & how long. When I met with the principal he mentioned that he would be bringing it home with him every night & id be responsible for it.

When I was working for Apple and putting what's called "image software" on the iPads for use in classrooms, the software was preloaded so it wouldn't allow any other apps other than the learning apps to be installed on it. So most likely your child's school is the same way, they're for learning only

@emkasting, right now I'm unsure if they have cases (I sure hope they do!) I'm unsure of how much they will be used and I'm unsure what they will be used for. But in going to find out at the time I meet the teacher. Right now all I know is they get them and he will be bringing it home with him each night & I have to get headphones for him lol that's all I know right now. I just think it's crazy for a kindergarten class.

@ciaramarie oh well yes i do agree with you there, they shouldn't expect parents to pay for something that is VERY easily breakable especially around young children. I'm sorry, I guess I did miss the point :/. They should at least have life proof cases on them to prevent that type of damage. Unfortunately though school will probably be the opposite of a "break" from technology. Pretty soon a lot of the learning our children will do will be technology based.

@emkasting, I think everyone missed the point of this post. I get that technology is a big part of our lives. I have an iPhone & an iPad. My son has a leapfrog & a kids kindle. I'm not going to not allow him to use technology, it's too late now that I already introduced him to it. What I'm saying is I don't think it should be in a kindergarten classroom full of kids who don't take care of things then expect the parents to pay for it. Most kids have these things at home with all the learning apps so I don't get why they also need one at school. I'm friends with a girl who has a daughter. She doesn't play on any type of technology she's just a few days older than my son. She is so advanced. She was brought up reading a lot of books & exploring while asking questions. I'm not saying iPads are bad to have. I'm saying I don't believe they should be in a kindergarten. School should be the time away from all the technology.

they could be telling you to limit screen time for him because it tired your eyes out and that could be painful for him and in the long run make his condition worse. i apologize i thought you were trying to tell me the screen made his eyes go bad.. Idk i like the idea because it helped my niece and she is a really smart girl because of some of those apps. she says big words for her age and fully understands the meaning and i don't think many schools would teach that content if she was old enough to go to school. she isn't on it all the time but when she is and it's for recreational use i notice she is watching television in spanish and she knows what they are saying. it really is awesome what they teach on those apps! @ciaramarie

I will say though that my child will learn to write and socialize with other kids. His whole life won't revolve around technology but I'm not going to fool myself into thinking I could rid it from his life

Technology is going to play huge part in our children's generation. There's no way around it, it's always going to be in their lives so it's best to embrace it. My SO and I met while working for Apple and part of my job was to image iPads for school use and go to different classrooms teaching kids about how to use them. They can be a really great learning tool as well as recreational. Obviously you don't want it to take over your young child's life but stripping them of technology would be taking away a big part of their generation.

@naomiedgd, I know it won't be all day. And I'm going to ask more about it when we go to meet the teacher. I just hope his homework isn't on it! They need to learn to write by themselves. No on an iPad. I just personally think kindergarten is too young for that in the classroom. & he has 3 eye Drs. And they have all told me to limit screen time because of his eyes. And they don't work in the same office or even the same town. All 3 are in different towns. The one I mentioned earlier was the one who actually did the surgery we recently had a 1year follow up and he told me that.

I don't think they will be using it all day. I feel like it would be for a few minutes a day and the kids will think it's play time when they are really getting some brain juice. I think it's a great idea actually cause i know lots of children don't like sitting and listening all day. & The eye thing is in fact a myth. You should probably invest in a new doctor if they said that to you. I also don't think they should be letting them take it home & have it like they do in the apple store where you can't remove it from the little stand they have it on. that way no breaking! (I'm so sorry if this comes off rude i suck so bad at words i mean this in the nicest way) @ciaramarie

If they are going to place an iPad in front of my child to learn, I might as well do that at home & just homeschool him.

@naomiedgd, it's not the fact of having an iPad. My son has a kindle. It's the fact of it being school. I don't believe a SIX year old needs one for school. Like I said before they are not gentle with things, they are clumsy so they are bound to break then they expect the parent to replace it. I don't think they should have iPads in kindergarten. When I was in kindergarten we did so many hands on learning and exploring. And I think that's how it should be. And actually the screen thing isn't a myth my son had eye surgery and his eye surgeon told me to limit his screen time because it can make his eyes worse again & he will need the surgery again. But I'm not saying iPads are bad. I get there are learning games, my son has a bunch. I bought that with my money knowing that it would possibly get broken and if it did I'd have to make the choice of fixing it or not. I'm 21 and I accidentally break my phone all the time. But the school my son will be bring this iPad home (I have an almost one year old) so if it gets ruined I have to immediately fix it since he uses it every day. My problem is they don't need that in kindergarten, maybe in a older grade but not kindergarten..

I don't really see the problem with using the ipads. There are educational apps and parental settings you can put on it. i live in a really bad area so i will not be encouraging my child to go outside and play. I'll take him to the park in a nicer area when i can but he sure as hell won't be outside here. I'm not saying let them become ipad zombies but times are changing and thats what kids are interested in these days. as long as he isn't being bad i don't see the issue. also, the eye sight thing is a myth. screens don't do anything to your eyes except tire them which can be "cured" with a nap. :)

It's honestly sad..like i said I'm a young mom so technology was around when I was growing up but my mom didn't allow us to have it. Only reason I had a phone was because I was in cheerleading & I couldn't even do much on it lol. I had fun outside..until I got pregnant lol. I don't want technology to take over. I want my son to be the kid who still takes a lawn mower and goes and mows lawns for extra money..no sir at home playing call of duty. @phasion

@andiryan93, so true I remember when I was younger there were so many kids playing outside riding bikes, scooters, playing football now you don't see that anymore . And talking about this I need to limit myself on the technology .

@phasion, I have a limit on it. It's a kids one. It shuts off automatically. I set the timing he can be on it. He also can't get on it until a certain time I think I have it set at like 10am and he can't play past a certain time I believe I have it as 7pm. I encourage him to play. We just made something for my mom the other day with his hand prints. We do stuff. I'm just saying there's nothing here to go do.

@andiryan93, yes! My SO is a big gamer and he said the other day "I'd rather him play video games then run the streets" I said uh no. I don't want him to "run the streets" and get into bad things but he's also not going to sit in front of a tv or computer or iPad or any screen all day.

@ciaramarie, wow yes time to either take it away or just have him use it for only an hour. Perhaps a when reading bring the characters to life like you have create masks or costumes together get his hands dirty and messy a little kids love that! I have ideas for days so let me know if I can help !

@andiryan93, good thought! Getting my son a kindle was the worst thing I've done as a mom. I have abc mouse and learning games but it's created too many problems. I'd rather my children play and explore. Ask questions or read a book.

@ciaramarie, I totally understand !! But as far as technology we have no choice but to keep up with the times because this is all the government . And I will give him an hour or set a schedule then take it away and be like ok that's it lets go outside so even if your son screams and cries let him start making outside interesting to him I'm in Florida so pools , water guns kids love!

@phasion, my son only has learning games. But I don't think a six year old should have an iPad at school. School is the time for learning and adventures not sitting on an iPad. And six year olds are so clumsy, they are going to break. Then they expect the parent to fix it. I never had any kind of technology growing up (and I'm young lol) I'm only 21, and I'd much rather have books & take notes not be on an iPad. I just think kindergarten is way too young to have that in the classrooms.

@phasion, I won't allow my daughter to have a tablet this young. I prefer her to play outside and interact with other children. I will teach her what she needs to know. I would rather her learn by books instead of an iPad.

I could understand maybe middle/high schools having them. But a 6 year old!!!?!

@phasion, I don't think technology taking over is a good thing. I got my son a kindle for Christmas put learning games on it and he's lazy now. Never wants to play outside he wants to play his game I have to put a limit on it. And I feel like if he is on one at school he shouldn't be on one at home as well. And he already has messed up eyes looking at a screen all the time can't be good..

@andiryan93 I'm going to find out at the meet the teacher day what all they do on those. But I do know I'm not replacing it if it breaks! That's their own fault for giving them out to a 6 year old lol.

@andiryan93, then that's where you come in as a parent and limit iPad usage at home. But me personally my son uses his iPad he's one and is learning a ton and knows some of his colors already so it's isn't about the iPad it's about what you have your child opened to on the iPad .

I understand middle school and up but not lower

This is good because technology is advancing daily. In order to function in this world now and days technology is needed . Soon libraries won't have books they will be all on computers almost like how it is now . We have online classes, everything is surrounded by technology

I would be complaining and telling them I don't want my child using one!
