So I have a question, and I hope no one judges me but before I got pregnant I was a cigarette smoker...I stopped as soon as I found out I was pregnant. Now that I have birth 2 weeks ago, I have been kinda craving for a cig...Now my question is, if I do happen to have a cig will the nicotine pass thru the breastmilk since I am pumping and feeding her my milk?

It will pass through breast milk. They say if you have to smoke do it right after breastfeeding or pumping so your body has the maximum amount of time to cut down on the amount of nicotine before the next feeding. Also the most dangerous part is the chemicals. It's not just smoking around your baby, it's the chemicals that linger in your clothes and hair that your baby breathes in when you hold them. I've never been a smoker so I don't know how bad the cravings get, but if you've been off for nine months maybe it's worth fighting. Whatever you decide good luck momma!

Sadly I believe it does pass through to the milk and in high levels at that. I've read it can affect your milk supply and your baby even after you've smoked because it lingers in the air as well. But I think you should talk to your OB or a lactation consultant if you're really feeling the urge. Good luck momma.
