How much do y’all spend on school clothes and school supplies per kid? What’s a standard amount of outfits and shoes to…

We do 7 outfits and one pair of shoes per kid to start off the school year. They get new shoes as needed, their feet grow so fast! This year I spent almost $150 on school supplies for my middle schooler and $65 for my kid in elementary. My youngest is in preschool through the local school district and doesn't require school supplies. Only things teachers take are kleenex and sanitizing wipes, everything else is bought for my kid only to use.

I am a teacher, and I learned very quickly that if I don’t collect supplies at the beginning of the year and give them to the students as they need them, they will inevitably get lost, damaged, etc. lol. So for example, let’s say there are 2 glue sticks or 2 boxes of crayons on the list, I have them keep one of each in their desk, write their name on the other and collect it. When the glue stick runs out or most of the crayons are broken, I will find their other ones and give it to them. Whatever doesn’t get used, I give back at the end of the year. Im not saying every teacher does this, but most that I know do, and maybe that will help your husband feel a little better about the teacher collecting supplies.

We are a mostly uniform school. 4 days per week they have a uniform policy with free dress earned on Fridays. I bought 8 uniforms, 2 pairs of shoes and 4 free dress outfits. 4 summer uniforms and 4 fall and winter uniforms. The pants are $10 and the shirts are $6, shoes are always under $40, most were $25 this round on clearance. I spend about $250 and my kid is set up until spring. I’m making my dad do the same for my sister and so far he’s gotten her 5 outfits, socks, shoes and hair accessories to match her uniforms for $125

Supplies is a different beast because we don’t do traditional school, it’s a public Montessori charter that depends on volunteer hours and supplies to make it a great classroom. We have to supply individual headphones and other things labeled with their names and then add to the community with a box with copy paper, hand sanitizer, Kleenex, and other little things. Putting that together cost me about $50. My kid is getting a private school education in public school so I don’t mind. All the kids have a kit in a box labeled with their name on it in their own assigned cubby so I don’t mind them taking the supplies and using them as they see fit.

I find it easier to just shop through out the year for clothes and shoes as she grows and things are on sale. She has a pair a shoes for a variety of things gym sneakers, casual ones, boots for winter, dress shoes,sandals etc. I do usually buy her a new outfit for the first day and picture days. We invested in a good ll bean backpack during pre k and still use it with the matching lunchbox. We have school supplies to use at home but the school provides things for her to use there so I don't really go school supply shopping unless we're out of stuff here.

Honestly we just buy a bunch of shirts AND pants for them and 2 pairs of shoes to rotate one another. We don't count outfits . We buy all new including boxers and socks . We have boys so its much much easier lol I also but the school supplies on the list. I don't try to go out of my way to find teacher supplies but I do get them because of the fact I over heard parents say "I'm not buying my child this, because the teachers are lazy to do so." I couldn't believe it but people are like that. I think people forget that schools only have so much funding and can not get ALl the supplies they need for the year and MOST of which they buy comes from THEIR own money. People are selfish.
