Last year in September a 10 year old boy was hit early in the morning in the crosswalk on his way to school. The driver of the car didn’t see him, but yet it was determined she was going faster than the school zone speed limit. They never specified how fast. Well I didn’t know this little boy but I was so upset that this happened in front of my sons school and how could it even have happened?!? They have lights and an adult at the crosswalk. Anyways.. I’ve always wondered how the boy was because all you hear is he was taken 2 hours away to a hospital and no updates ever. Sadly last night it was announced the little boy died from his injuries. He fought well over a year with severe brain damage, brain swelling, multiple broken bones and he couldn’t take it anymore. It’s really upsetting that too many people in this world are in such a hurry all the time that this precious child lost his life when he shouldn’t have.

That's so sad...what happened to the driver?

@mujerstillregal, well my cousin was hit last year while he was riding his bicycle. Here we aren’t allowed to ride them on sidewalks so they have to be in the road. Actually it’s the same road the little boy was killed on. Anyways my point, he was riding his bike during the day. A beautiful clear summer day, and an older woman I believe around 62 hit and killed him. She got a ticket and that was all. No jail time or anything. Very sad. Not quite the same thing but same results.

oh my, I'm so sorry for you're family's loss 😔 I'm thinking this might be different because the child was in the crosswalk
Heather··
thank you and I really hope so for the family’s sake.

Something like that happened here a year ago. Basically the parent forgot to put the parking break on and left the car running while they went inside to pick up their kid. A student walking through the parking lot got hit by the car and died. It was terrible.
I get that everyone's in a rush picking up and dropping off kids, but they have to be mindful of the fact that they're surrounded by kids and need to be extra cautious. Too many accidents happen in and around schools.

Wow, was the car parked on hill or a slope? It's so weird that the car moved by itself!
The death of a child is always so devastating 😣

it must've been. I looked up the article and it happened 2 years ago and apparently it pinned the girl and her father against their own car as they were getting in. Poor kid had gone through chemo the previous year, too 😔

That's absolutely horrible. People just don't think at all, playing with their phone, hurrying somewhere and not thinking about how kids don't understand blindspots and just dart out. Life changes in a split second.

Smh, it was at a crosswalk, people should be prepared to stop at a crosswalk, especially at hours that schools are just opening or closing. It's one thing to hit a pedestrian, but to hit them in a crosswalk?

probably staring at her phone and didn't see the crosswalk. I had a patient once who was in her early 30's, was walking her dog and a lady hit her. She ended up in a wheelchair for life, brain damage and blind in one eye. Very understandably bitter. She had this awesome life as a photographer and then it was completely changed in one second. People don't respect crosswalks at all.

So so sad 😭

So sad and sadly it happens far to often. I watched a boy get hit in front of my kids school thankfully he was perfectly fine just shaken up but the visual of him being hit and flying in air has never left my head.

Yes! Several years ago when my oldest was in middle school we were in line and watched a truck drive right through the school zone with the crosswalk lady out there in the road with her sign and everything and the driver hit 2 girls and they both flew up into the air!! Scariest thing I think I’ve ever seen! One girl broke her leg another broke her pelvic bone or her hip I can’t remember. So so sad!!

Oh goodness. That is horribly sad.

This is terrible. Absolutely heartbreaking. Unfortunately I have to tell parents nearly every day to slow down or put their phone away while they’re driving through our school PARKING LOT during dismissal. Other drivers speed down the street even though we have our flashers on and the speed limit is 20mph.

This is so sad, and to get this news around this time of the year. I can't understand what kind of a rush that driver could have been in, imagine how fast they must have been going to put the little boy in the hospital

The speed limit on this particular road is 45 until you get to the school zone then it goes to 20. She had plenty of time to slow down but I don’t think she did. If I remember correctly it was raining and that was her reason that she couldn’t see.
Mind you the road is lit up by many street lights and there is also a dollar general on the corner across from the school and it has many lights, not to mention the school zone lights flashing and the street lights at the same intersection were lit up. It was a little after 7 in the morning. There was also a crossing guard in the road.

especially since it was raining, omg, you're supposed to go below the speed limit when it's raining 😖
