I can’t stress this enough, PLEASE TIP YOUR SERVER!!
We typically always tip because well waitress/waiters typically only bring home what tips they get and in some places they even have to split tips. If our bill is 25 or under the tip is the same as the bill (we round up on change though so if it the meal was 23.50 we’d leave an 24 dollar tip). Any thing above we leave and 15-20% depending on service. There’s only been maybe 3 times I didn’t tip my sever because they took our drink order and food and we never saw them again until we had the manger hunt them down so we could get our bill and leave. Never asked if we needed refills or if our food came out okay.
That is amazing!! I love people who go out of their way to tip amazing. It’s unnecessary and so generous! It makes our day
I don’t agree. Waiting is a service - and in all service tip is up to the consumer.
We usually do tip 20%, but if the person is rude or the service is less than ideal - sorry no tip from me. And I won’t consider tipping less than normal and here is why - yes you can have off day, everyone does, but that doesn’t justify your shitty service. I don’t bring my personal problems to my work and I am expecting the same from you, wether you are a waiter, lawyer or construction worker. It’s called professionalism.
Just to point out one instance where I had to try hard not to throw food into someone’s face - last time I was pregnant we went for steak and we always order medium rare for husband and medium for me. The waitress brings my food and tells me she is also pregnant so she gave me a favor and asked my steak to be well done. Yes. Well done lady - you got. I tip and we are walking out of the restaurant
It’s also not realistic to expect us not to have emotions. People shit on us and are rude all day long. and you’re being a little harsh and rude. And that’s an example of an awful experience and no tip is justified. You’re entitled to your opinion tho
Girl yes, I always leave a tip. I use to be so bothered when I waitressed if they didn't tip me. I worked at western sizzlin (steakhouse) & hooters. Both, I just made $2 something/hour so I totally depended on tips.
& FYI, I made the most waitressing. When I was 15 years old I could walk out with $70-$100 in just 5 hours. At hooters I made $200-400 PER NIGHT. Way more than medical records job(which I've done), teacher assistant (which I've done), cashier etc etc..
It’s very bittersweet! Sometimes I’ll work 4 hours and leave with $30 bucks and sometimes I’ll work 4 hours and leave with $100
@brooklyn_corey it depends on the night, we would have busier nights than usual, also, I had my regulars & could always count on them to leave me a good tip.
Thank you 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 like what is the point of going out to eat if your not going to tip your server I mean I know everybody has they own opinions when it comes to this but to me its only right 🤷🏽♀️
Honestly it is not the consumer responsibility to pay you a tip because your employer doesn’t pay you a decent wage. That is the job u chose.Im not saying you shouldn’t tip.Of course if I feel the tip was earned it will definitely will be given but it shouldn’t be automatically assumed because of your low hourly pay.Your either doing it for one of two reasons, because your love what you do which in that case it shouldn’t matter the pay or it’s a job u had to take which that’s unfortunate but again not the consumers fault 🤷🏽♀️ Sorry not sorry.
Don’t take this the wrong way;
I always tip, even if they suck i just leave a lower tip. But I always felt that it shouldn’t be up to the consumers to pay a server a livable wage. It should be up to the owners/management. I wish servers were paid an hourly wage cause it’s not fair to you guys.
It definitely should be the restaurants responsibility to pay us something we can live off of, I agree 100%
It’s funny to me how whenever posts are made about being a decent human and tipping based on percentage and service all of the “well, I don’t tip because....” people come out and try to justify their actions.
It’s common sense everyone - yes.. you got horrible service? Then don’t tip! But, if your service was good / great, then tip appropriately.
No need to try to explain your reasons not too: we get it.
That’s not what this post is about. It’s about those who got great service, yet still don’t understand that 18%-20% is customary.
@jennatess, I agree that it’s common sense in our country. I personally believe the restaurant industry should pay their employees a living wage and stop expecting their customers to subsidize their employees’ wages, but that’s a whole other ball of wax.
@brooklyn_corey, Yeah, I work hard for my money so my money shouldn’t be an expectation for someone who provides subpar service. I’ve been a server so I see both sides of it.
I really dont always tip though bc ive had it a few times where the servers dont let me know when they up charged my bill and im left with WAY more than i came with and then feel horrible when i physically cant tip bc i also have bills to pay. Ive yelled at servers for this before simply bc i didnt know a refill would be an extra charge on my bill or something simple that i would have said no to if i only knew what the upcharge was and sometimes that upcharge WAS their tip. I had a lady upcharge me a $7 drink bc she didnt tell me the refill was an additional charge and she upcharged my husband on something else adding to $10 that we initially were not going to use as part of the bill for HER tip. Then she got upset with US when she never told us about the upcharge when we apologized all over ourselves for no tip. We even went to management to explain the situation bc even though we initially planned on giving her a ten dollar tip she was rude the entire time and only offered to fill our drinks once and checked back once.
That server doesn’t sound like a very good one!! It is definitely part of our job to let you know if there is going to be an upcharge. Some servers are shady tho, and won’t tell you because they want the bill to be higher so they can possibly get a higher tip. I don’t agree with doing that at all
I think it's different in the states! Didn't know the wages were so low! But I have a question: why go for a job that pays so little?
@theharmans2018, I make $2.15 an hour and it all goes to taxes
A tip is earned, in my opinion. I live in a state where servers make minimum wage ($10.50) so if the service is horrible, then I don’t feel bad for not tipping. If there are things out of their control like it’s crazy busy or the kitchen messes up, then of course I don’t hold that against them. But if they’re rude or ignoring us when it’s slow then I don’t feel the need to fork over my hard earned money to them. On the other hand, if the service is good then we tip 20%. If it’s great we’ll tip much more than 20%.
If it’s completely awful I understand not tipping! But if it’s just bad or not the greatest, please still consider tipping even if it’s a small tip. You never know what is going on behind the scenes. Here we only make $2.15 and all our paycheck goes to taxes. We only make tips
@brooklyn_corey, Do you have to claim your tips on your taxes?
@ek_, yes. At the end of the night we have to claim 10% of whatever our cash sales were. We also have to tip out 3% to the hosts and bartenders. So if we don’t get tipped, we still have to pay them 3% at the end of the night. Even if it has to come from us
I’m a server and have been in the restaurant industry both as management and hourly for over a decade. At first I thought not tipping was ignorance, now it’s clear in my opinion it’s selfishness. Sometimes because of tipping out support staff I end up paying for someone to eat there! As a server, we get blamed for issues beyond our control (long ticket times, incorrect food prep from the kitchen, a table they don’t like, etc). People forget that we get paid NOTHING, and the tips are how we feed our family. All of our hourly goes to pay taxes. If you can’t afford to tip, don’t eat out.
The only people i dont tip are delivery drivers bc i worked in pizza and the little closed caption "your delivery fee is not part of your delivery drivers salary" is actually total bullshit. The delivery fee is how much their delivery drivers get paid hourly. Meaning that if its a super hefty delivery fee then they also get mileage plus tips. I had delivery drivers leaving with upwards to $13 an hour complaining about tips when i got paid minimum wage working my ass off making those pizzas dishing out pizza after pizza and made in a week how much some of the delivery drivers made in a single night. Ig its me being bitter but i dont tip 20 percent. I tip 3 dollars to offset the delivery fee to 7.25.
It’s different with delivery drivers. They make some money hourly and mileage and tips.
I usually always leave a tip, even if we didn’t get good service. Only because I think to myself that maybe they’re having a bad day or shit is happening where they didn’t have enough help so it’s not their fault, or could be their first week there so they’re not the greatest yet. Only times I haven’t tipped when it was disgusting the service we received. But other than that, I always tip. Some just get more than others depending on their service. I’m easy to please.. have respect & don’t give me a shit attitude & im Cool. You don’t have to be super fast nor will I blame you for my food because that seems to be a thing & I don’t know why because they don’t make the food.
@brooklyn_corey, exactly. So why punish them for it? Like I said, as long as people are respectful & doing the best they can, I’ll tip them.
@girlmom., a lot of people base their entire experience on the server. We don’t control the temperature in the restaurant, the lighting, your table, how fast your food cooks, or the people at the table next to you!
@brooklyn_corey, & yet people treat em like they own the place so therefore everything that goes wrong is their fault🙄
It sucks busting your ass so someone can have a nice night out and get nothing in return. It’s a huge slap in the face in my opinion
@brooklyn_corey, seriously. It’s like, just tell me up front if you want good service or not. I don’t HAVE to go above and beyond.
@jennatess, I try to go above and beyond for everyone, but not always. If you tip me bad or not at all just because, and then come back and I serve you, you will definitely receive decent service but I’m not going out of my way for you again. We remember faces of the bad tippers and the good ones. If you’re a good tipper, every server will know and you will always get great service. If you are a bad tipper, they all know and your service will probably reflect that
I only tip if they are good servers, if they are rude im not tipping sorry!!
I understand it sucks! If they are absolutely horrible I completely understand! If it was bad or not great, please still tip at least 10%! You never know what could be going on in their personal life. My co worker had to come to work the day after her long term boyfriend died in a car crash because bills still needed to be paid. Just something to think about! Completely your choice tho
Tipping is very important. Those people work for peanuts and have to depend on those tips. When we go out to eat we tip our servers good!! I remember one time we went out and we had a young server who was about to turn 21. She was a great server she was lots of fun and she deserved it. We tipped her 100% of the bill and said happy birthday!!
People don’t realize how much that means to us servers!! You don’t know it, but you probably just helped her pay off one of her bills! It really can turn a whole day around. Not just the money, but that a customer appreciated them and their hard work paid off
We don't tip at all here in Australia, but even we know that in the US, tips are everything for workers. People living there have no excuse not to!
Yeah cause I’m pretty sure in Australia your servers make hourly. We only make $2.15 an hour! If you get good/normal service you should tip 20%. Bad service 10%
@brooklyn_corey yeah we get hourly wage for everything. Minimum wage for service is $17 per hour and that's for a junior. I couldn't imagine being in the US and not tipping though. People need tips to live! I've heard how low wages are there, it's crazy.
@mamagunn.no.1, yup! It’s crazy! Our bills only get paid if we get tipped. Every night is a gamble on if we will make good money or not because you could be the best server ever, and still have people not tip
Only the worst kind of people think tipping isn’t necessary
Worked a double today, and my last table ran me all over the place and was super needy. Gave them super good service and a free birthday desert and their bill came to almost $300. They didn’t tip at all.
@brooklyn_corey, 😡😡😡 hopefully karma gets them. If they have $300 to spend on dinner, then they most definitely have $60 for an appropriate tip.
@jennatess, it was a huge slap in the face. I was done with my shift and had to stay an extra HOUR waiting for them to leave just to not get a tip.
I only tip if they are good servers, if they are rude im not tipping sorry!!
