For the moms with older children, do you discipline for B's on report cards?

I was punished for my grades my entire life. It created an incessant need to please people so that I wouldn’t get in trouble. I struggle with being a perfectionist as a result and have spent years trying to overcome the self deprecation that those expectations caused me. If your child is doing their best, regardless of their letter grades, they should be encouraged and praised.

Not for a B. Only for a C or lower, but only if it was because they weren't putting in any effort. If they were failing because they didn't understand the subject, or for another reason like the teacher wasn't a good teacher, then I'd figure out how to help them improve their grades, whether it be a change in class or a tutor.

Um no .. you're asking too much from your child. I could understand if they're getting d's & F's and they put no effort in to try and do better than yes but not a B.

Totally agree. I dnt do this, it was a debate at work and two ppl think B's are bad which is ridiculous .. A-C is acceptable in my book.

Only if you want to take any possible ounce of joy out of learning

No i expect them to try their best and give it all they have and if that reflects a B then less screen time and more book time.

When my daughters in school I would never discipline for bs or any grade really as long as she told she tried her best

Yes! This!
Going to school no longer became a safe haven, it became the same hell that home was.
I ended up not going to school for almost an entire year from panic attacks.

@mombie., because in my case, anytime I got a bad grade it was bc I was unmotivated by the teacher ... there is such a thing as a bad teacher and good teacher... by the way... I went on to school and already have two degrees ( bachelors and a masters ) in science field and working on figuring out what PhD program to start... and I got many Ds and Fs while growing up. I am employed in a science field and have been for many years. Education to me is all about how it’s presented and what is retained, not about a grade . That’s what’s messed up with our system . Doesn’t let kids be kids .

@soleil15, yes but it’s not always the teachers fault they can’t please everyone just like you and me can’t please everyone and not everyone likes us I didn’t like most my teachers but my F’s were on me not them

@mombie., true, in that case I would move my child to a different teachers room . But wouldn’t be upset with them.

B's are awesome. I'd be praising the kid for not getting D's and F's. You won't always get 100% in life, no need to beat your kid down so they feel like they have to be perfect or mom will be mad.

@jleona, oh ok. That’s ridiculous that they think that’s bad! My son gets A’s and B’s and we praise him for it. Even if he got a C, it would be fine. Some subjects are harder for kids and vice versa.

Absolutely not. My mom did and it became a huge problem. I was never able to learn self motivation because I was always focused on getting A's simply to avoid getting in trouble. Once I got to college, I was lost. The emphasis should be on learning and on effort, not on grades.
