Umm. Having your brother in law pay rent is ridiculous. He isn’t even living there. I can see if he was living there part time at least. But the MIL sounds like she’s looking to catch a free ride.

Sounds like the mother in law is trying to use him. If he isn’t living there why should he have to pay rent? As long as he provides the baby with everything the child needs he should be good. And secondly, I understand the baby mama is about to start school. But why can’t she get a part time job?

Oh no, no, no. His responsibility is providing for his child's needs. Not his mother in law. He should absolutely not be paying rent and they can't make him. He doesn't live there. I see child support issues in his future when the mil doesn't think he's giving enough no matter how much he sends.

I completely get giving money for the baby's needs, but not paying rent for somewhere he isn't living. I kinda feel like he should buy things for the baby and drop off physical items like diapers and food, not just hand over cash because I get the feeling that he shouldn't trust the the grandmother with the cash. It's totally shortsighted and impulsive of her to flat out quit her job.
