I’m hoping you ladies can help ease my anxiety. I really wanted to breast feed and pump for my baby but I’m having a really difficult time with the control factor. I hate not knowing if he’s getting enough. He’s having a hard time latching and when he does he falls asleep every single time even when I strip him just to his diaper and poke him and tickle his feet. After breast feeding I offer him formula ( I was told to by the health nurses because of his weight dropping/high levels for jaundice) He is taking well to the formula and is eating about 1.5-2 ounces of it so I’m thinking he’s not getting much from my breasts. Should I just quit trying to breast feed and go straight to formula? I just need you ladies to tell me about your experiences with using both breast feeding and using formula.

I was never able to establish a good breastmilk supply. That didn’t stop me from breastfeeding. I supplemented with formula from when she was 2 weeks old up until 13 months. We are currently still nursing although it’s mostly for comfort. It’s up to you what you want to do.

I too can't stand not knowing how much baby eats so I've just been pumping breastmilk and formula feeding too. We've been doing half and half and my daughter is doing great with it.

@kellsbells907, It depends on the baby but yes my baby became lazy after having the bottle. The bottle is easy for her while breastfeeding takes effort. But she never had a good latch to begin with and we didn't really work on it too much because I'm not a fan of breastfeeding anyway. Not all babies become lazy like that though. Some can handle both breast and bottle.

I breastfed exclusively for the first month until the constant fussing while feeding every 30 mins drove me crazy. He was fine the first 3 weeks then would cry and spit out my boon after a 15 min feeding as if it wasnt satisfying his hunger. I started adding formula feeds a couple times a day and it was better for a bit but one boob just dried up even though I was still breastfeeding so I cut it out altogether. There is no shame in not breastfeeding and your child will not lack in health or be sickly. Though it is true but "breast is best" has been turned into a method of shaming moms who don't or cant breastfeed. And it can also encourage moms to keep breastfeeding even when it's in the best interest of the child to give them formula. Sorry a topic I feel strongly about hope I didnt offend anyone

@kellsbells907, my daughter was not affected by the bottle. She loves the boobie. She was able to latch fantastically as soon as she was born. Our problem was just my supply.
I used the Avent Naturals with a slow flow at first then increased the nipple flow as she got older
