Good dogs/puppies to get for a 2 year old? My mom seems to be set on getting my daughter a dog lol. What would be the best breed to get that would be good for her & not be a hassle when trying to find a new place to live (when that comes up)

Not to be rude but I don’t think I would teach someone not to hit by hitting them. I’d just give her a firm talking to (one warning) and immediately remove her from the room and sit her in a different room if she doesn’t listen then leave her there.

@emmamarch16th everyone there told her not to. We would smack her hand when she didnt listen.

I don’t think any person or animal would be happy to let someone hit it, it probably just tolerated it. You (or whoever was supervising her at the time) are the one who let her hit it.

You need to tell her not to do it and seriously mean it, it’s so unfair on the animals

@emmamarch16th my daughter picked up this habit when we were in NY, because my grandmas service dog would play with her and let her hit her. We told her no constantly that it isnt nice, and showed her how to pet the dog nice. Now she just hits my dog and cat and myself constantly.

That’s good, I hate it when parents let their children hit and pull animals and then get angry at the animal when they protect themselves 😢😤

They know very well what they’re doing from an early age and although they may not realise they’re hurting the animals, if they’re told not to, then they will defiantly know it’s wrong.

@emmamarch16th everytime she hits one of the animals i tell her no and to be gentle and show her how to properly pet them.

All I have to add is please don’t let her hit animals. My son is 2 1/2 and never got away with hitting our dogs. I always told him off if he did and showed him the right way to do it and said ‘kind hands’ when he was really young (around 1) but by the age of 2 he knew very well not to hurt animals and that it isn’t funny or the right thing to do.

We have small Maltese terriers so he could easily injure them by hitting them. Not to mention the dogs could fight back/ if he tried it with another dog they could retaliate and I wouldn’t blame them !

@alice-quinnsmommy my mom wouldnt agree to get a pitty for the moving reason. I wont be able to get one until I have my own house.@fakoffyeh my mom and I are going down tomorrow to an event the shelter is gonna have some dogs at.

We had pitbulls growing up. From infancy to full grown. Always wonderful. They are very sweet and easy to train. Though, with moving they could cause a struggle since they are often with labeled as "aggressive dogs".

@lii94 my daughter is in the hitting phase right now and she hits the animals I do have thinking she is just playing with them. @jennatess ive never actually adopted an animal from a shelter. I had a Dalmatian mix when I was younger and my parents got her from friends, my cat I had walked into my house when she was a kitten, I had a poodle that we got because the woman who had her was put in a home, the dog I have now we got from Craig's list, my one cat I got when she was a kitten and fit in the palm of my hand and my other cat my mom got from her friend because she couldnt keep her due to having to move.

I would wait until she’s old enough to care for it. And not with a newborn on the way. I would go nuts.

You know, it really just depends! When I adopted my cat, she was going to be euthanized that same day so they gave her to me for $20.00.

When I adopted my dog, she was right at $100.00.

My mom adopted hers for $14 because they were over full with pets. They were running a deal for the 14th of the month, $14 to adopt a dog, and $4 to adopt a cat.

And then it can also depend on if they’ve received medical care recently or if they’ve been there longer or whatnot. It really just depends. But, it’s SO worth it walking away knowing you’ve saved a life instead of purchasing and adding to supply and demand of breeders.

I have a lab huskie and a dachshund. Both are great with clark, but my big girl loses so much fur the up keep is insane. I ended up gating off the living room just so i can stop vacuuming 10 times a day where he crawls 😫

Dachshunda aren't known to be great with kids though. Took awhile to get accustomed and im worried about the rough age where they're learning to be gentle, as they are so long and easy to hurt.

The next one we get once these two are gone is a bishon frisee. Apparently stupid easy to train, small but not mini. And barely lose fur 😍

I'd probably get a French bulldog or italian greyhound if i got another dog. I have a staffy and he loves my son but not surprising cuz most bully breeds are good with kids. Adopted my dog from a rescue during a charity event and he was free!

Some adoption days thru shelters are free (holidays) or low cost!! Or many shelters get shutdown often to overcrowding and they surrender the dogs for free or they risk euthanasia

Any type of hound makes the best companion. They're smart, very sweet and any hound I've ever been around loves kids.

I have a lab. He is very much a gentle giant. He is fantastic with the kids, even the babies.

@ncpmomma labs are very good dogs and I just adore pugs but they do have some health concerns. Most animals do though some less severe than others.

@jennatess how much is it typically to adopt from a shelter. My mom says it is like a couple 100

We adopted a Boxer from the shelter when I was 3, (I named him Bingo. Lol). And he was, to this day, the best dog. We had 3 kids in our family, and then my cousins were always around and he was just an absolute angel.

The shelter will be able to point you to the right direction of what pups they have that does well with kids & other dogs.

@wolfnurturer i dont think she could do any full poodle. I myself would LOVE a bulldog or pug. A lab would be good too, ive heard they are good with children.

@jennatess I do have a small dog right now he is an Australian Terrior/ Poodle he is rather old. I'm not sure how he will do but he is getting to the point I'm not sure how much longer he will be here.@wolfnurturer we had a toy poodle once upon a time, my mom had such a connection with her, better than I have with my own boyfriend lol. I dont think she would be able to have another toy poodle.

I would just walk the shelter and go for a medium size. Smaller breeds tend to be better suited for single people homes (some, not all.) and the larger ones may* make future potential rentals think twice (stupid, in my opinion! Big dogs are wonderful also!). I would try and find a medium size, definitely. Good luck!
