I'm in Ontario too and my son would start full day kindergarten (FDK) at our nearest public school as a 3-year-old (late birthday) this September. I will definitely not be sending him. I want to homeschool but my husband has his reservations. He does agree with keeping our son home for the next couple of years though so I'm hoping I can just keep it rolling until highschool and my husband won't notice hahaha

The church we got to is also a great Catholic private school and we both want to send our kids there but it's way more then we can afford so we r doing preschool there instead.

The area we bought a house in the elementary school is the best in my city but the high school is the worst so they would only do elementary at this one then for middle and high school we would transfer to a different district for better schools.

I wouldn't say my husband was against it but he wasn't for it. We bought our house in a specific school district bc it ranks one of the top in the state. He said he'd leave it up to me since I'm a teacher. But the more I rant about common core and the testing, he's for it now. I'm the one that's not sure. Public school is definitely out. After being on the inside for 10 years, I can't send my kids to a public school. I know too much. If consider a private school but would have to find one that would meet all my expectations.

These are good points to share with your husband.

Urrgg I was talking to my husband and he's totally against home schooling.

I told him we aren't ruling it out yet because my oldest is only 2 so I told him we will talk more about it when he's 4. But for now I'm going to start and keep looking into info for it.

I plan to homeschool my kids. I am blessed to have found a wealth of resources and homeschool groups around where I live they have monthly meetings Facebook pages and activities and meet ups for kids. So I have joined them all my kids are 2 and 3 but I want to learn as much I can now and get valuable insight. Search for similar groups where you live I am sure you will find lots

I was homeschooled up to about 7th grade, and then again for 11th-12th. I don't remember when I officially started. Knowing my mom, she probably eased into it, adding more subjects etc. as I got older. She was pretty laid back about her approach but did buy curriculum.

Do you have any homeschool associations in your area? Even if you don't want to join they could probably advise you.

I did homeschooling in 3-4 grade and online school freshman year of high school. My mom was my best teacher. I hated public school. I don't think my daughter will do well in public school either but we don't have any alternatives where we live now. She's 2.5 now so we have time but we're considering half day homeschooling when the time comes purely for the social aspect. For now we play. I try to follow her lead. She is definitely a hands on learner, no worksheets for her! She loves counting while cooking, naming colors of her paints, listening to stories, super interested in the moon, stars and weather. Unschooling fascinates me and maybe some day I'll find the faith to commit but for now we dabble in montessori, unschooling, play based learning mish mash of styles. :) so I'm no help. ;)

I intend to homeschool my girls, who are 3 and 4 months. I am "unschooling" now, by capitalizing on teachable moments as they arise. My 3 year old knows how to count to 12, most of her letters, basic colors, and that snow is what happens to rain when it's really cold. I don't know if we will continue to unschool, or if we will find a more formal program. I might just buy curricula as her interest in a subject arises.

Do check your local laws. In Florida, there is all sorts of testing and such, but you can get out of it by enrolling in an umbrella school.

In CA, you don't have to have your kid enrolled in school until 6, so you don't have to file anything with the state before then.

If you are in the states just check your local laws. Our youngest children will be homeschooled, but due to shared custody of our older children they attend school. Our schools here are crap and due to state legislation there isn't much the school can do about it. Our principal acknowledges that education has gone down the drain. Someone once said "no child has ever exclaimed "I had this homework packet and it changed my life!"

In Ontario we now have full day Junior kindergarten and there is a big push about how much "better" it is. I think it's probably "better" for the teachers in 1st grade because the kids are acclimatized to the schedule and structure of the establishment. Honestly every child is different and has different needs. Ava is very intimidated by large groups of children and I think she would be completely overlooked. But she loves seat work! She would do worksheets and reading and piano practice for hours. Her sister on the other hand would eat worksheets for hours ?

My kid started school, but until then I've had the unschooling approach in mind. So there's no formal start. We were always just doing new things and going new places. And now he's in school half days because I want to have the rest of the day to relax and do more exploring and playing. All of the other kids are there till 3 or 6pm. That would just be too much for him. The baby, on the other hand, is a social butterfly so I think I'll enroll him at 18 months for 3 half days. My point is, it depends so much on the kid, and there's no rush to do anything formal or official.

I'm leaning towards homeschooling too. I'm not planing on anything formal until 5. For now we play! My oldest will be 3 in April.

I think sensory bins can be everything from sand to dry pasta. It just depends on what you've got around.

I was homeschooled until grade 10 and we will be homeschooling at least for jk/sk.

️Ava will be 4 in March and she's really advanced for her age. We are working on legit reading (which seems crazy to me but I'm following her lead). There are a lot of online resources that I've found but I haven't done a ton of research yet. Right now we do piano and singing, reading and numeracy and the occasional science experiment (we are growing beans this week). It can be overwhelming but I just try to use everyday opportunities to teach.

I want to do learning stuff at home now but I don't even know what to do. Everything I find is all electronic stuff which I don't want everything he learns from to be from that.

Dh and I were both homeschooled. And we'll definitely be homeschooling our kids too! I love the freedom to learn at our pace. Learning doesn't have to be like at school--at home, we can go with the flow and explore whatever the kiddo is interested in and learn about the world that way!

Hi Milly :) we're already unschooling/free schooling. Learning happens everyday all around you.

I did get a subscription to abcmouse.com but more for myself than for my dd as I wasn't familiar with preschool curriculum (I taught 3rd grade).

We read a lot and do activities based around areas of interest. Sensory bins, painting, play dough... Lots of singing and movement. I'm not concerned with abstract concepts such as the alphabet yet, although my kiddo is starting to make one to one correspondence with letters as we sing the abc song. I find math concepts happen easily for us as we play and cook.

I'm still trying to connect with some other homeschooling moms but haven't found my tribe yet. We are Krishna Conscious and most groups around here are Christian. Online groups (facebook) have lots of helpful info though so might be a place to start.

The only home school family I knew growing up the boy was very socially challenged. Since I have met some sweet and normal home schoolers.

We are definitely considering it as we live overseas and don't want dd growing up in an Expat bubble but more experiencing both cultures. Home schooling would give us greater flexibility

I plan to homeschool, but ds1 is 2, so I still have some time.

I was homeschooled from Gr. 7-11

It was much more advanced than what I was learning in a public school. The program we used was Abeka and it was all set up already. We had DVDs of a teacher teaching each lesson to a class. It was basically like we were sitting at the back of the class.

I'm not sure when I'm going to start school with my son. I think I'm just going to watch and wait to see when I think he's ready. I will probably try to stick to the regular age/grade, so he is on track with public schools.

I'm curious about this as well! My aunt homeschooled all 7 of her children (they are Air Force and weren't huge fans of all the base schools) until high school. All of her children are super intelligent. That's the only homeschooling family I know in real life.
