As an educator, this did not sound right to me, so I did some reading and research, and thought I would share a useful site with factual answers:

https://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/he/se/faq.asp

It is age appropriate material, and it does allow parents to opt-out in writing.

Neither 3-4 really outlines whether abortion is included. I can’t see that being a part of their age appropriate discuss in kindergarten though 😑

I know for our kids in grade one they got the class regarding gender identity and safe touching (sexual assault awareness) but nothing was really geared towards abortion and birth control or anything of that nature. There was also an option to opt out a week ahead of time (which some parents did)

Take a look at questions 3-4. They will be, but it will be age appropriate.

This says 7-12 surely they’d not be teaching any of this in Kindergarten as she’s saying?

Why don’t you just call her in sick that day?

No it's not bout him or abortions or anything that a 6 year old should be learning bout it's bout good and bad touching kids should learned that no one not even a family member shouldn't be too touching their private parts to me it would be less kids being sexually abused kids don't k or what's going on so it better to take precautions u know schools wants to prevent that as much us parents wants to I asked and even sat on one class time with my daughter and literally they never talked bout sex or birth control or abortions just unappreciated touching

The only class I ever had in elementary school was in 5th grade. You had to have your parents sign a permission slip. They separated the classes into boys and girls and then each class talked about personal hygiene & safe/not safe touching. We got little bags of hygiene products and talked about puberty. Obviously they made it on a 5th grade level. If you are so against them teaching anything to your child don’t send her to school that day? Taking her out of school is far fetched I feel like. They cannot force your kindergartener to participate in anything. I find it hard to believe they are aloud to teach about abortions and sex and everything you stated to kids that have no clue what that is or would even be able to comprehend that. You need to contact the school and get better understanding.

My son got one class in grade 1 which entailed teaching them about “safe touching”. About how your parts are private and yours. It’s to prevent sexual assault not sex education. Maybe that’s what they are referring to. They also always require permission if you don’t want your child taking it those kids go to another class for a movie or art project.

I find it very hard to believe you were told your child can’t opt out, it’s part of education legislation which are laws schools are required to abide by. They’d never tell you that your child is required to attend classes about abortion and birth control in kindergarten..I’m sorry that is just the most outrageous and far fetched story ever.

Are you sure you haven’t misunderstood? I can’t imagine them teaching about abortions and birth control to kindergarteners.

I understand you not wanting people you barely know teaching your children about a core value that should be taught by you. I understand parents who are uncomfortable with the subject and welcome sex education but if that’s not for you then take your stand and make no apologies for it. I personally don’t want other people‘s viewpoints on core values to influence my children in a way that goes against our fundamental beliefs as a family. And you never know exactly what they will be teaching your children in sex education. They can keep it age-appropriate and still teach your children things that you don’t believe in. I applaud u momma

Have you asked what the curriculum is before jumping? I'm sure its age appropriate and not learning about sex. Sex ed is also the education about their bodies, appropriate contact, consent, etc. 6 is well beyond when those talks should start.

laniejay

Lanie Jay

@angm.2213 birth control and abortion for a kindergartner?? I'd like to see how that curriculum passed. Are other parents outraged?

angm.2213

Manda

yes parents are protesting but they are still allowing it.

they need to go to the board of education. Is this public school? I cannot see this flying.

You could find out more information from the school about it... i think its great theres so many kids who had bad things happen and dont even know what going on. But i think talking young and open with kids helps them feel comfortable coming to us about everything. Alot of parents dont talk to there kids about there bodys or even call body parts the right name and its hard on kids because they think the correct terms are bad then to use. Your the mom so you know best but it coyld be basics on the body and goos touch bad touch and just the basics and correct terms.

penelope127

You could always opt out, and not have her participate.

angm.2213

You can’t opt out

maybe ask again what exactly they are learning. We had to have permission slips signed and turned back when we had sex Ed.

angm.2213

from what her school told me they aren’t allowed to opt out.

I never heard of Sex Ed for kindergarteners. My youngest will be started kindergarten next fall and I have never heard such a thing. I am thinking it could be about inappropriate touching and not sex. My kids have known since they could talk about their privates and no one should ever touch them and what to do if someone tries to. We are very open about things like this though. You really can’t trust anyone these days. More often, it’s a family member or friend who is more likely to abuse kids which is why is so important to teach them young.

angm.2213

Manda

It’s only in California.

theycallmemommy

Steph

that’s really bizarre they are teaching sex and abortions to kindergarten! I don’t even know how that would be appropriate.

justgotaname

Justgotaname

Is it Erin’s Law? That teaches them about bad touching....Are you sure you have your facts straight?

justgotaname

Justgotaname

@angm.2213, no it is K-12 getting this, but in developmentally appropriate ways for each grade.

angm.2213

Manda

I don’t think it’s appropriate for my child to be learning about hiv and birth control at 6 maybe you can let your child but I will not let mine.

ss3mom

Ss3mom

that is wonderful and I hope my kids school teaches this! I think if the schools and parents started early there would hopefully be less sexual abuse towards children. I’m all for this

tasticmel

Melissa

It might be different now but If I remember right from when I was in school you have to sign a paper allowing them to teach your kids about sex Ed. If you didn’t sign it then they weren’t allowed to teach your kid about it and remove your kid from the room

ss3mom

Ss3mom

What do they teach at that age? I think some education would be good at that age. Do u know what they are talking about? Maybe it’s just simple things that they should know at this age? My son is in kindergarten and he’s never mentioned that to me

I mean is not my decision to make but why u want to pull her out of there cause the sex education? I think is good cause all these kids getting sexually abused and the kids don't know what's goin on you get me? Like my daughter had that in school and she told me all about it what she has to say or do or if she has to scream if she has to she knows her body is hers nobody else's it's not nice or appropriate for her to get touched on I think is just a way to warned the kids and to be safe and have less sex offenders out there

mrsmord

Lori 🍕

How old is she ? And what you mean sex Ed coming to her school ?

mrsmord

Lori 🍕

@angm.2213, i mean it’s alittle young but maybe ask what exactly they plan on teaching the kids ? Maybe it’s the dangers of sexual abuse etc . In that case it might not be so bad . I wouldn’t pull her out of school for that necessarily. You should find out more a out specifics

angm.2213

Manda

I do not want my 6 year old to learn about sex she’s still to little.
