giving water to babies
My daughter is 5 months and I recently started feeding Her stage 1 foods which she is doing well on. But when do you give them water and what's its purpose?? I know it cleans our systems out but for babies, breast milk or formula is their main nutrition until age 1. So what is water for with them and when should you give it to them???

Here's some good info for you from Kelly mom

My daughter is 6 months old and I just started giving her a small amount of water in a sippy cup to try to get her use it. But its my understanding they don't really need it.

My 8 month old only has one meal of solids a day still, and I'll let her have some water with them, but no more than 1 oz. If she seems to want more than that, I'll just go nurse her.

My doctor said water isn't necessary. Breast milk is 80% water anyway.

Thanks ladies and thanks for the link. I went to my ob and one of the receptionists said I should give her water but I didn't know what for. I always thought breast milk provided them with everything so I was confused about the water thing

That's why she's just the receptionist :)

Wow @melmal, you can be a receptionist and still have brains, just hope that didn't offend any receptionists out there .
Everyone's thoughts on giving babies water is different. The reason why you don't give babies water so early is so that they don't get full on the water and miss out on the nutrients the milk has to offer. My auntie would give her children a sip of water from 3 months of age and she exclusively breast fed.
At five months I gave my first born water after a meal because I felt like he would be thirsty (as you would) then there after I would give breast milk.

@ial I gave her a sip of water yesterday and she seemed to like it. Then she went about her business and didn't pay me any attention lol. But thanks everyone for your input

I've been an admin assistant. I didn't offend myself.

@ialsm it's not an opinion about water. It's because babies digestive system is not advanced enough to handle water, specifically kidneys. Giving them just water can give them water poisoning. Breast milk or formula is the best way to hydrate a thirsty baby. Sure, my grandma gave my mom water when she was 5 months old. She also smoked while carrying her around and drove with no child restraint seats. Doesn't mean I'm doing it.

You should look it up or talk to your doctor, because my doctor said no water before 6 months. She told me it can cause liver or kidney problems. I can't remember which organ it is, so you should research it!

I'll definitely look it up! I don't go back to the dr until next month but just wanted to know bc she suggested it and wondered what it was for. I'll stuck to my breast milk until further notice!!
