Gagging on Solid Food
Anyone have experience with a baby who has a VERY sensitive gag reflex? My daughter is 10 months old (born at 36 weeks at only 4 lb due to IUGR), started solids at 6 months and has no problem with 1st/2nd foods or thick oatmeal cereal. However, anything that has even a hint of texture to it she gags and pukes it up. I was eating a peach and let her taste the juice on my finger (she has had peaches before in baby food). I guess there was a teeny tiny bit of peach flesh on there bc she started gagging until I saw it come out in her drool. I attempted 3rd foods once and same story. She also gags if I even touch her tongue with a Gerber yogurt melt or veggie puff or baby cookie. I'd love to hear how others helped their little ones overcome this.

Sorry, haven't had this issue with my son...anyone else?

My 4 month old has a horrible gag reflex. We struggle in getting the nipple from the bottle in her mouth. We're going to start working with an occupational therapist and nutritionist to try to nip this in the bud. I can already anticipate big problems when we start solids. She's was on a ventilator for a week and they think that has contributed to her eating problems.

My son had a terrible time with solids. It took him to almost two years old to accept "chunky" food. We worked with a feeding therapist and it turned out he had overall low muscle tone and this was part of his eating issue . The best advice we received was to just keep offering and making it a positive experience for them. Eventually he had the desire to want to eat those chunky food but he still would gag and throw up but little by little it got better and now at almost 4 years old he eats almost anything.
