8 year old handcuffed.

An 8yr old is still large and capable enough to do some very serious damage. If it comes down to the safety of the kids and adults around them, I don't see it as a bad thing. It definitely isn't ideal, but safety comes first, and this is a less harmful way to deal with it than some other methods that could have been used.

It's definitely a sad situation all around, but in the end safety of everyone involved has to take precedence.

Eta: i don't know the absolute particulars of this instance so I can't say what was necessary, but I'm not about to jump in and say "oh that's just awful". It may very well have been necessary.

I have 2 autistic boys. One is 16 and the other is 6. I know how meltdowns are. There are still other ways to calm them without handcuffs especially an 8 year old.

I actually do think an 8 year old with a disorder and making threats can be very dangerous. They are not babies or innocent at 8, you don't know what's really going through their head if they are sick and you don't know how they have been raised. It's sad and I don't agree with it, there are obviously other approaches to avoid something this horrible, but seriously think about it what would you have done at that point? I guess you won't really know unless it was happening to you. Overall this is sad. Makes me sad this is the world my son is growing up in.

I didn't say there weren't better ways but it depends on the situation. There's a textbook answer for everything. We know that already. Not every situation is a textbook situation though. We can blame the school and the officers but why not blame the parents for not giving their kid the appropriate techniques to deal with their emotions? Maybe they did and it still didn't work. You can't control everything. An 8 yr old in handcuffs is not the worst thing in the world, seriously. Not ideal but not the worst.

I've had police come and cuff an 8 year old and sit him in their car for a while because he was trying to hurt me and another staff member with big garden rocks. The other staff member ended up sitting on him. You think it's funny cause they're 8 ... until it's you they're trying to kill. Same kid would pick up household items and try and throw them at my head. We have to follow therapeutic procedures, do all the crisis management techniques you can imagine but it doesn't always work. If a kid with critical needs and often behavioural issues gets into a rage, it doesn't matter how old they are, they want blood.

Not saying that's this 8 year old, my examples are pretty extreme but none of us know and there are times when you'd be glad of handcuffs being used on a kid, trust me.

I work with developmentally disabled adults and children, if someone is harming themselves, harming others or destroying property we physically intervene to ensure no one is harmed. I didn't watch the video but if it escalates that far that one of those 3 are happening then some serious intervention is necessary I've had children try to stab me in the heart with pens, I've seen pregnant coworkers where kids purposely go for their belly. So I find it hard to judge without knowing 100% of details.

Again, there are more appropriate ways to handle an 8 year old child who is having a meltdown. The problem isn't that he wasn't doing anything wrong, it's the fact that they used excessive force on a child. This "officer" was getting his/her frustration out while dealing with this child, there is no need for that. If they can't keep their composer and handle these situations the right way, they shouldn't be working with children and especially not special needs children.

So many other ways to diffuse the situation without handcuffs!

People keep saying how much can an 8 year old do? A lot lol. Especially if they get access to something they can use as a weapon.

Нравится Ответить

It's not that I think this 8 year old was at fault. The other kid might have deserved it. But sometimes when there's an extreme situation, you do extreme things to prevent harm to others. For whatever reason they did it here. Whether it was necessary or not is pretty much conjecture by the rest of us since we don't have the full scope of the situation.

He's 8. You mean to tell me that the teachers believed this boy, who was in the front office, was going to somehow escape and kill the other kid? If that's the case that's all the more reason I'd pull my kid from that school, where is the control of this situation? The kids were separated and this particular child has a disorder, so while it's alarming to hear a child say such horrible things, there was no actual threat to the other children and if there was a threat to the adults there are more appropriate ways of dealing with these types of things that don't involve leaving bruises on students. Also, even if I said my kid was a threat to my other child, I can guarantee CPS would be at my door if I did this, it's not ok.

Children with special needs say things. Doesn't mean he's turned into the hulk and over powered adults. He's 8. Adding to the aggressive behavior just makes their senses go into more of a frenzy. Still making the situation worse all around.

Нравится Ответить

It should never have escalated to this point. He had been bullied by that kid for months.

Нравится Ответить

He wanted to kill the other kid.

Нравится Ответить

@pp there is a difference in restraining a child and putting handcuffs on so tight they leave bruises. If my child showed up to school with bruises like that from me handcuffing him, would the school be cool with that? Probably not, so why is it ok for them to do it?

Нравится Ответить

I can't watch the video so I can't get all the details about the severity of the situation but I've worked with 8 year olds who have tried to beat my head in with fence palings lol.

You can be as understanding as you want, you can attribute kids' problems to everyone else in the world but not every way of dealing with them is going to be therapeutic. Sometimes they need restraint. Don't know if this incident was one of them but not every outburst can be prevented by someone in charge. A lot can be avoided but not always.

Brenda, yes! I think sometimes people confuse legality with morality. Just because something is legal that doesn't make it right.

Нравится Ответить

It's sad how people agree with the law is law. It doesn't mean it's right.

I'm watching The Help and back then segregation was the law. When are people going to realize the law isnt always right?

These children/people are different. They are still people. They have different needs and different ways to be approached when they are over stimulated. Handcuffing them and putting them in jail will not help anything or anyone.

I would also be livid. There is no need to handcuff an 8 year old and definitely no need to handcuff him to the point of giving him bruises on his wrists, that's unacceptable. My child would be pulled from that school immediately, I wouldn't want my child in the care of adults who wouldn't be able to stop this situation before it ever escalated to that point. I didn't get to watch the video so idk if this was addressed, but did they at least try reaching his parents before placing him in handcuffs?

This is what should be done for children in schools.

I'd be livid if I ever saw my 8 year old handcuffed. I pulled my son out of public school because of stuff like this. There's not enough training for children that are high needs. I wasn't willing to put my son in a situation where the adults around him would escalate it to a point where something like this was done.

Watch prison kids documentary on fusion and youll get a different insight on how kids with disorders think differently. React differently and are treated differently. Theyre misunderstood and treated like adults when their brain has yet to develop but you want to handcuff and punish them like adults. Sorry but i see kids fight in my class. Hit teachers. Make threats and we dont get the law involved because they dgaf about kids with special needs. We treat them like humans who sometimes make bad choices just like "normal" kids. But the rate of arresting and disciplining these kifs are way higher and more severe than a child with no disorder or special needs. Im not going to argue. The school needs to learn to handle these themselves or educate themselves before treating a child like an animal just because their different. Im done with this post cuz i know damn well you moms would flip if you saw your child treated this way. And i dont wana hear oh my kid would never because thats bs and i highly doubt they have issued with their brains. Goodnight

Working with kids and kids with special needs are two different worlds .smh and you dont need to handcuff a child regardless. .an 8 yr old at that? Get real

Нравится Ответить

Yes, this child has a disorder. But that doesn't mean that in that moment he wasn't a danger to himself or another child.

Нравится Ответить

I'm a teacher lol. The law is the law. I'm also certified in crisis prevention. We obviously don't see eye-to-eye on this, but the officers goal is to protect everyone & themselves. This kid was putting him and others in danger. He was stopped. Sorry he hurt himself in the process. What should have been done was the prevention by making sure that kid who was bullying him was in trouble. But the school ignored that, and this is the end result, which is obviously not ideal.

Нравится Ответить

U obviously have zero experience working with kids who have disorders and no clue what they go through especially at 8. And this story also doesnt state what caused it or provoked it. Look up his disorder. You should be ashamed of yourself. I work with emotionally disturbed. Severly handicap and autism and they have a very difficult time even being in school. They were born that way and cant help it. The school should have a better understanding and handle on kids with problems.

Нравится Ответить

Doesn't mean that they need to change the law because he has a high anxiety disorder. Tons of adults would be getting off the hook on many offenses if we solely took disorders into account. Whether someone has a disorder or not, it comes down to their actions and what is needed to control the situation. If he was combative, it's pretty safe to assume he was hurting those trying to stop him from fighting. What are they supposed to do, stand there and yell stop while someone is physically causing damage to others?

Нравится Ответить

I feel like using handcuffs on an 8yr old is dramatic... although he allegedly yelled I'm going to kill him -I wouldn't take that seriously. 8yr olds are dramatic and he's been being bullied so I wonder what the older kid did that finally made him snap and fight back. This just seems like a mess.

Нравится Ответить

Did u not read he has a disorder. Which makes his brain think and process things differently and not as most kids would. Smh

Нравится Ответить

He was fighting. Threatening the life of another student. All other measures failed, so yes, physical restraint is appropriate. Had it been the officers arms/hands restraining him and the child had been combative, then the child would have bruises/marks on him by a police officer, would would cause bigger issues than the handcuffs. He was fighting them and the cuffs, which causes bruises and marks.

As for the bullying, that is what the school should've had under control from the beginning. It's not fair they failed him and this is the end result.

Нравится Ответить

As sad it is its very common among special needs kids and kids with disorders. It seems very extreme but some people dont have compassion or understand thought processing or behaviors of children with disorders. Theres a documentary showing that florida actually arrests more elemntary school kids and actually charges them as adults. I work with special needs children and it breaks my heart to see them treated this way .

Question: 16 year old dating an q8 year old? Thoughts??

My opinion is hell no. 16 year old is still a kid. Kids now a days want to be grown so bad and be in adult relationships and situations. I know when my daughters are 16 and they tell me they are dating an 18 year old. I will surely flip my lid.

ameliasmomma If something were to happen to her, the boyfriend would be tried as an adult
