We all stereotype, consciously or subconsciously. There's literally a stereotype for EVERYTHING! Race, gender, culture, etc.. Do stereotypes offend you? I may be the odd one that is not easily offended by Hispanic or gender stereotypes. I know who I am and am not. And I'm ok with that
Hispanic culture puts a lot of emphasis on female strength. The Virgin Mary is a very culturally important figure. Stereotypes last much longer than whatever they were originally based off of. Stereotypes developed because people in the past typically didn't travel to experience different cultures for themselves. So they based their knowledge on whatever the media portrayed. Unfortunately, there was a lot of racism and prejudice that went along with it.
PP, I'm sorry you've had such a bad experience with the Hispanic men in your life. I can assure you that your experience is not the norm. There are bad men in every culture. There are not significantly more of them in mine.
In high school a teacher made it a huge deal that the only Asian kid finally got an answer wrong . She made the whole class be quiet and kept going on and on. He told her to double check her work and she ended up realizing she was the one who had the wrong answer. She looked so dumb for making it a big deal
You are correct on where those stereotypes came from. Although, I didn't grow up drinking kool-aid bc my mom didn't let us have all that sugar. My husband made fun of me when we met bc he came to our house and when I got him something to drink it was Juicy Juice. He was like, "what is that"? He asked if we had kool-aid of course we didn't. I told him I didn't even know how to make it and he had a good laugh at that. I do love watermelon though, lol!
Oh damn! So is the stereotype that r&r ladies cannot discuss a hot topic without drama not true? Why didn't I get the memo? ??
No I definitely don't get offended. I laugh at some of the Hispanic ones because they can be so true sometimes, that's why I love George Lopez because he always points them out
I feel these stereotypes exist for a reason though, people didn't just come up with them out of no where but everyone is different so it won't always apply
Abusive men come from many different races, that has a lot to do with the way they grew up though, not their race. I have actually met many Hispanic men that find it disgusting that a man would lay a hand on a woman and some even will teach lessons to those men that do? but that's a whole other thing
I don't mean to offend, it just pisses me off because I've seen to much of it around. Not only in the news but what some of my aunts and cousins have gone through and my mothers friends. I'm half latina. I don't want to seem negative but sometimes I feel on edge when I meet a latino guy because I don't know how he will be personality wise. I dated an Ecuadorian guy a few months ago who told me that out of nowhere, he doesn't mind hitting woman. You best believe I stopped seeing him. I felt disgusted and this was from someone talking about how much he respects his mother but yet looks at a potential so as less than him. That wasn't the only case for me. Machismo exists. Of corse not all latinos are like this but it's scary that a lot of them can be.
Some stereotypes might seem funny but then there are some that make absolutely no sense. Like when did the stereotype watermelon and cool aid become a thing. I thought almost every race would like that not just one race.
Then there are some that are just downright scary but somewhat truthful like that latinos are macho men who are abusive. Of course not all are but yes a good handful can be which is a scary thing. I've seen it a lot first hand and almost had to deal with that. Then there are good positive male role models who are latino that I have known. The truth is any race can have abusive males but some might be more than others. It all depends how well the person is raised and who their group of friends are. If they learned that type of behavior from their father, then they grow up and continue the cycle.
I don't see the problem in thinking that a person of a certain culture would do something associated with that culture. There are statistics that don't lie. The majority of the Asian students at my high school were ranked at the top of the class. Does that mean every Asian will always be smart? No. But the majority of them do well in school. The same goes for negative stereotypes. Do they apply to everyone? Of course not. But statistically something can be likely based on culture and race. There shouldn't be anything offensive about that
That's so absurd! I've never heard that one before ?
I had braces so maybe there's some truth to that. Tell him to sleep on the couch anyways
Yes certain stereotypes piss me off like hearing white people can't dance. I hate when people stare at me when I dance like they can't believe it. Then I have people recording me, laughing because they are shocked and hearing omg look at that white girl dancing. It makes me feel weird like if I'm an animal or something.
I'm frustrated by stereotypes. I'm guilty of doing it, but as soon as I realize I'm doing it, or it's brought to my attention, I change my ways. I don't defend negative stereotypes or try to excuse them, because it does matter. What people assume about me and my kids by looking at us affects how they speak to me and how they treat my children. I want to be judged on my own merit, not on any preconceived notions of how I "should" be.
Maybe not but I found it funny none the less..
It's ok to laugh at some stereotypes.
Oh and this post is not about breaking stereotypes. Stereotypes evolve and change over time but they never go away
