WTF is this a thing now? A few days a posted about being invited to a birthday party and having to bring a dish. It’s for an acquaintance so I’m not going. Well my nephew’s birthday party is tomorrow. My SIL just texted me asking me to make a dish. What the hell? I’m running around with my own kids tomorrow for various activities, swimming, violin lessons, etc before the party. Now I’m supposed to go the store pick up ingredients and find time to make something before going to the party? What’s funny is she said she’s not making anything herself, just chips and dip. She’s “keeping it simple”, but asking me and asked my mom to cook? Since when can we not go to a birthday party without having to bring dishes along. Is this a new thing now??

My sister likes to “host” holidays then sends out emails giving each person a responsibility- even handing someone the responsibility of the turkey on thanksgiving! 😏

When I host- I do all the providing. If someone offers, I say you’re welcome to bring a dessert or something, but it isn’t necessary. How can you “host” and not provide?

@laniejay, wtf? The turkey of all things??? I mean, I get if it’s a big family get together and everyone bring something and cooperate. But even then I’ve never asked anyone to bring anything. If people want to, it’s fine.

And it’s a birthday party!! And she’s not making anything! WTF. I’m just super annoyed. I’ll probably do it bc I’ll feel bad if I don’t, but I’m annoyed. I think I’m going to ask her to bring the cake for my son’s next birthday party🤣

I think the acquaintance asking is weird but not the SIL. We always help each other out in my family for events. If you’re busy you could always get something premade or bring a bagged salad. Something easy.

Also- I’m super close with all of my SIL so that could make a difference.

I think it’s weird either way. The only time we’ve hosted something, and asked other people to bring food is for Super Bowl.

If it’s something for our kids we provide the food.

My SIL and I don’t have that type of relationship. She is my son’s godmother, lives 5 minutes away and barely sees him. She’s not very involved with the family. I also don’t ever ask anything of her. On the contrary...a couple of weeks after I had my second, I took her 3 kids, my 3 year Old and my newborn and had a sleepover for them at my house so my son had someone to play with. She willingly dropped them off and had a night to herself. Even knowing I had a 2 week old. She’s never once taken my kids or asked to spend time with them.

And I just think it’s weird to throw a birthday party and ask people to bring things. She told me herself she’s not making anything. She’s just buying chips and salsa. If she’s not making anything why would she ask other people to? It’s not like “hey can you pick X thing up? No she wants me to make rice and beans and an artichoke dip!

Now because she's family and specifically asked you for a dish I'd bring a dish. I mean yes food is usually taken care of by the parents/host not the guests but again because she asked I'd do it. If you don't have time to actually prepare a dish/meal which is obvious due to your busy schedule tomorrow..a veggie or cookie platter from the store or bakery should suffice...or maybe another option you could purchase that she'd approve of. Let her know you what you got going on so she can at least compromise.

I could never ask guest to bring something I would be so embarrassed especially if I'm not even making a damn thing!🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️I always offer to bring something if it's a close family event because I know my siblings have favorite dishes I make but I hope this dosent become the new normal thing, cause nobody has the time now a days

If it’s a birthday bbq I always bring a dish. If it’s a catered birthday I don’t. I like bringing a dish along but if I did have a busy schedule I definitely would let the host know so maybe she could ask someone else.

No. Get like a 100 piece chicken nugget or something and just quietly set it down and walk away when you get there.

I can’t even fathom asking guests to bring food to an event I’m hosting. Very tacky, IMO. UNLESS it’s been specified as a potluck. Tell her you don’t have time to cook something but you’ll be happy (not really) to pick something up. It’s a compromise for her rude ass.

If she’s doing chips and salsa- bring guacamole. Tell her you didn’t want to go against her theme.

Nope I don’t care if it’s family, don’t ask me the day before to make anything. Or bring anything unless I offered/asked if you wanted me to pick anything up. Sorry not sorry

@laniejay, very true. But it looks like she’s in a position where she feels she HAS to help or risks looking like an asshole to the rest of the family. Which is funny cause her SIL is the ass in this situation.

I have the other side: I’m from Australia and this is super common on family events. Not so much for acquaintances but for family or friends or friends of friends, it’s every event 😂

Even if they don’t ask people do it anyway. It’s almost “rude” not to bring a plate as we call it.

We even have adds to advertise products to take to parties when we are told “not to bring a thing” 😂😂😂

If it’s not common over there though it’s a bit strange. Have you told the person your not comfortable bringing anything?

@liz.h, it’s common for family events to bring a dish, but usually the host provides the staples. They don’t typically require guests to provide everything. Usually what is brought is to compliment what is there, not to fully service the function.

Well In my family it’s just a thing that we all bring a dish. Even to bbq’s and summer parties. I’d do like a dip or something. Maybe even buy one pre made. See I always bring a veggie tray to all family functions. However I know way in advance that I’m bringing it. My dh works in produce so he gets the stuff for free all I have to do it cut it up and make a dip for them. It’s just standard in my family.

If it was a specified potluck (weird for a kids birthday party in my opinion, but whatever), or she had asked for help ahead of time because you’re family, I would think that’s fine and just how families are. But I think it’s quite rude to ask you to bring a dish (and a specific one at that!) the day before the party. It’s especially rude when SHE’S not even making anything. People have lives outside of her kid’s birthday party. This is not a “clear the whole week” type of event for her guests. If it was me, I would explain to her that I already have plans and won’t have time to make a dish and I wish she had asked me sooner so I could have set aside time to help out with it. That way you aren’t setting yourself up for more of this silliness in the future but also don’t look like a complete ass for not helping. If you’re willing, you could offer to pick up something quick on your way over, as others have suggested, but I don’t think you should feel obligated to do so.

I wouldn’t do it for a child’s birthday party but will usually bring a plate of something to any other occasion or at least offer to when invited. Usually for my kids parties I provide all the food myself. It’s rude that she told you the day before and is only doing chips and dip herself. 😑

I've never heard of this either.. We're having a bbq in a fortnight for my sons birthday but I'd never expect people to bring food along I'll be supplying everything.. The only thing ive told people is that if they want a drink to bring their own bottle of wine etc as we don't drink

Family, no problem, we all contribute for holidays. But birthday party for friends/acquaintances should be fully hosted by the party giver. If you want folks to come celebrate your little darling, give them food ffs!

If you really felt like you needed to i would stop by the store and get whatever I could find.. like a veggie tray or some shit like that... Don't waste your time if she isnt..

I wouldn't bother to stretch myself thin. It's not like you'll be spending your day on the couch catching up on shows, you have things you need to get done. The worst part is she asked you the day before the party. Was she not planning on having a party until that last minute? I wouldn't make anything, nor would I purchase anything. I also would not feel obligated to do it, and would feel no remorse when I showed up with my two empty hands
