I'm receiving baby clothes from some who smokes daily. When i wash the clothes will it get the smoke out or will i need a special detergent/multiple washes or it wont do any good and its a lost cause? NO judgemental comments, I'm not judging moms who smoke around their kids. I'm just a non smoker never been my cup of tea and i don't allow it around my kids and yes it actually can hurt newborn babies with 2nd hand smoke. Its free clothes and i just need to know if i can get the smoke completely out or not and if so, how can it be done.

Try soaking the clothes in your bath tub with some Dreft detergent, vinegar, baking soda, and REALLY hot water and let it soak a while and you'll see a lot of the nicotine come out and then drain the water and do it again. Rinse the clothes in clean cold water until water runs clear and then wash them on a normal cycle in your washing machine.

Maybe washing it a lot would help. There may be special things for scent catching you can throw in too.

@rola thank you, I'm going to try everything! The clothes are coming from my cousin who has had all boys and since I've had all girls and having my first boy she's setting me up with clothes for the entire first year so i wasn't going to reject them because she's a heavy smoker. The clothes from her are helping us so much!

Probably a cray question to ask, but when did y’all start to wash your newborns clothes and putting them away? Like I’ve been getting clothes since I found out what I was having but I haven’t taken off tags yet or washed anything. I’m 30 weeks. It’s crazy because with my other 3 kids I didn’t really wash a lot of their stuff at first (got lazy) ALSO what laundry detergent did you use if you didn’t use Dreft? Because i saw Pyrex for Baby an didn’t know if anyone tried it??
