Today @Avie is going to chat about - Tips for staying fit and healthy while being a mom and throughout pregnancy

Ask her anything and share your tips in the comments below! Here's a little about the Mombassador: Hazel Smith has 6 years of experience teaching Fitness & Wellness. She is certified in the following: ACE group fitness, Zumba, & ACE Fitness Nutrition. She is currently studying for an ACE Personal Training Certification!

It can be a challenge to stay active and healthy throughout your pregnancy and while being a full time mom. I stayed active throughout my entire pregnancy and continued heavy resistance training until 8 months pregnant. Unfortunately, I struggled to get healthy and active after my c section. It was frustrating at first but as soon as I recovered I began to incorporate my fitness with my baby's schedule.

With the right motivation, goals and scheduling being a fit mom or a fit pregnant woman is possible! It is always an added bonus when you can keep your baby on the schedule with you!

Learn what motivates you to be healthy!

Set realistic long term goals for your fitness journey

Gradually improve your fitness level

Prepare meals while baby is asleep

Workout when baby takes their longest nap

Workout at home if you are a SAHM

During pregnancy eliminate high intensity training & add steady state training.

@smilingwithmyawesome4kids, I was too gym shy and insecure to be in there so what I did was looked up YouTube videos 😃 gave myself a diet plan after research and I started getting results working out at a minimum of 3-4 days a week for about 1hr

@avie, I am having the hardest time! Three years ago when I got married I was the healthiest I'd ever been. I ran three miles a day, plus, living in the mountains my husband and I were constantly hiking. We moved for the apartment we were in, that included a gym, to our house. I had gained 10 lbs from lack of working out even before I became pregnant enough. After I had my son in December 2015 I had no energy with the complete lack of sleep, I maybe got a handful of runs in during his first year.

Today I am still 20 lbs heavier than I was before having my son. I still can't fit into my pre pregnancy jeans, I just feel awful.

I get an hour and a half nap out of him a day and during that time I'm trying to get as much cleaning done as possible. When he goes to bed at night I am so exhausted, I watch an episode of whatever show I'm watching and pass out.

I just don't even know where to start!?

I do 15 minutes of HIIT on the tread in the morning 4 days a week and hit the weights 2-3 days depending on my work schedule. Great advice on the cardio in the morning. I encourage the HIIT. I do 30 second intervals of running for 15 minutes. HIIT is shown to have a longer after burn so there's a lot of benefit to it. I transitioned to Ketogenic way of eating and it's been amazing for me. Amazing energy and my brain fog is gone!!

@jenrz4, the best way to combat that is to up healthy fats like avocados, EVOO, cooking with coconut oil , Avocado oil. Healthy fats will help off set a lo carb lifestyle. They help to satiate you so you feel full and satisfied.

@nhasx3, Psychology shows it takes 21 days to make/break a habit! So typically by then a lot of people are consistent in their workouts.

The best motivation to reaching consistency is hard for me to say since mine is different than yours! Everyone is motivated differently. Whether it be by a goal weight, being healthy for your children, longevity of life... You really have to dig deep to figure out what motivates you!

@smilingwithmyawesome4kids, I'm studying a lot of fitness nutrition right now with ACE for Personal Training. What seems to be the so called "killers" or foods they say to avoid when trying to lose weight are white breads, pastas, white grains, refined sugars and non lean meat.

@val746416, Wow. That's amazing how much you initially dropped. Seriously inspirational.

I understand the depressed, eat, depressed, eat cycle. It is not something anyone wants to deal with. I personally have struggled with emotional eating so I can totally understand where you're coming from.

I think we are in the same mom boat though. I can't go to the gym either since I just became a SAHM ☺️💕 fortunately we have our own body weight to help us lose weight. Body weight exercises are actually one of the most efficient ways to lose weight. Have you tried following YouTube videos? There are tons that may vary from "an hour of cardio" "30 minute HIIT". Also there are fitness groups in this very app that keep me accountable from the moment I wake up. Have you joined any? If not message me and I can send you info ☺️

@skyy12221, For postpartum it can be so hard. I really struggled especially after my body felt like it was hit by a train post c section. The thing I find best is to set a realistic goal and continue to look at it every morning when you wake up. Whether you can put it in the form of a picture or words. Remind yourself of that goal throughout your day while you continue to try making healthy choices. Also a big secret for weight loss is... WATER 😂 Always keep it by you. & don't drink anything else besides it unless it's on occasion. Water will help your brain decide if it's truly hungry or just thirsty!

@skyy12221, Great question! What motivated me most DURING my pregnancy was the little one inside me.

I did give into cravings but I always made sure to balance it with whole foods. Also knowing that not being active, eating unhealthy and gaining too much weight could bring complications to the pregnancy was a huge factor to get my butt out of bed every morning and pick up some weights or go for a walk!

@ak.20, Did he say all carbs? Or to just eat whole grains? & when I didn't feel like walking I did Zumba to get the cardio in and modified it to be safe for me. I'd ask your doctor if dancing and doing Zumba would be okay!

@jordyn_beth, Good question Jordyn! My go to healthy supper is defiantly flank steak, steamed broccoli and sweet potatoes. I even get this meal when I'm out on date night & just make sure I choose the most lean steak on the menu ☺️

Also for a snack I've recently been LOVING having a plain rice cake with a serving of peanut butter and chia seeds on top. Yum!

@mcrowell0970, Can you eat any other meat? If so its just a matter of replacement of your proteins. Fish one of the leanest meats but it can be replaced with another lean meat like chicken breast, ground turkey and even lean steak cuts!

@ktarver44, Great question! I have had a few ladies I've trained with a lot of kids as well. Are you married or do you live with another adult at home?

Also I just saved a link yesterday for the dos and don'ts to strengthen those separated abdominal muscles. Have you heard of Diastasis Recti?

@avie in 2014 i had weighed my highest weight which was 290 lbs.. After healthy eating and excersice by June 2016 I weighed 180... But got pregnant in September 2016. I gained 40 lbs during my pregnancy and I gave birth on June 1,2017.. I have dropped 20 pounds but that was from the baby and everything else from after birth.. Now I'm struggling to lose the last 20 lbs to get back to my pre pregnancy weight. But I don't feel so much motivated any more ): and I've been feeling insecure since I don't like the way I look...and since my husband works out it makes me more insecure and I just begin to get depressed and eat more :/..since im at home all day with baby I can't go to the gym... I'm scared that ill just keep going up and end up back to my highest weight

@ak.20, ok! So mild cardio will be great for you! Yes carbs are hard to cut because that's what keeps you fuller longer ESPECIALLY being pregnant I can imagine you're extra hungry with little one sucking up all your nutrients! I wouldn't cut all carbs immediately but maybe cut your intake in half. I'm not expert or doctor but I know cutting it completely all together won't be fun and you will feel starved and you never want to feel hungry.

@erikasmiles123, The best thing that I've seen in the ladies I've trained and also for myself is just doing cardiovascular workouts first thing in the morning. All of these lemon waters and cayenne pepper fads only do so much. The best thing for metabolism in the morning is to let your body go for the fats in a fasted state. So going for a walk/jog/run when you wake up. Before breakfast. If I ever need a little something in my stomach I eat light. Like a fruit and coffee. Coffees is also my go to for increasing morning metabolism!!

@jenrz4, well im currently pregnant and was over weight when i got pregnant im almost six months along and already gained 25 pounds 🙁 my doctor wants me to cut all carbs and start walking to lose some of the weight but its hard because im a picky eater and stay so tired i dont feel like walking but iv got to do something.

@withlovedkj, Yes! My diet consists of only whole foods. So everything I put in my body is whole besides oils and nutbutters. Processed foods have a ton of extra fats and sodium that I personally like to stay away from ☺️

@smilingwithmyawesome4kids, It depends on what type of workout you are doing.

Any resistance training is best done later in the evening when you've consumed most of your nutrients. This is so that your muscles literally have fuel.

If doing cardiovascular exercises, these are performed best in the morning. This is because you're the most alert. Also if you're looking to burn fat your body is in a fasted state from the long sleep. It will go straight for the fat source in your system since there isn't anything nutrient dense in there.

@ak.20, when I stayed consistent and dedicated I noticed after a month! Granted everyone's body is different but I started out at home with 5 and 10lb dumbells, 10 and 20lb kettle bells and resistant bands, that's it! Looked up certain workouts for body parts on YouTube I did a lot of cardio to drop my weight like hiking with my son or running the track while he played as well. I cut dairy and out food permanently for a while but you don't have to cold turkey ! I was just testing myself and body. Eating every 2-3 hours boosts your metabolism !

@drewandvaehsmommy, What motivates me the most is one of my greatest phobias. Getting old and not being around to see the accomplishments of my babygirl, or to meet new people or to simply be around long enough to see how our society and the world changes. We truly have NO hard evidence or solutions to longevity and health besides staying fit and well balanced nutrition. Since it's one of my greatest fears, it has easily became is one of my biggest motivators for staying active!

I gained a lot of weight after I had my son but I have been able to lose 120lbs in a little over a year living a healthier lifestyle and exercising. I didn't cut any food out just made sure to have a daily calorie defecit. it is possible! I post tips on my instagram @arielamore85

As a mom of 4 I struggle to fit working out into my daily routine during the summer months when my older two are home and I have so much household things to do as well as pry of two clingy little ones. When I have no time to myself how can I fit a good workout in @avie, also I have major abdominal seperation from having 4 kids I basically have zero core what are the best exercises to build up my core strength and get rid of this belly bulge? #mombassadorchat

It can be a huge challenge to even think about exercise when you wake up tired, nauseous, hungry and emotional.

What helped me balance my fitness routines and the pregnancy was scheduling my workouts early in the morning WHEN I had morning sickness and when I was most exhausted.

This helped because if I waited too late into the day all my symptoms would follow and the nausea and fatigue would get worse.

Also working out in the morning when most of us pregnant women get sick, helped reduce the nausea and fatigue by a lot.

i've definitely been struggling with this lately, and i'm ready to make my final push to get active and eat healthier. especially as my little is eating more solids and then walking soon. i just want to be a positive role model.
