If you're a beginning breastfeeder or your baby has a poor latch . A Nipple shield is your friend . The first night I was home and had to feed my son I was ready to stop and cut my boobs off. I really wanted to breastfeed and hated the smell of formula, plus breast milk is good for baby. I talked to his pediatrician and their lactation consultant ran to the hospital and got me one to try out after she sized me up ... HEA-VEN to my sore cracked nipples. Eventually I was able to breastfeed without one . Before I was able to actually stop using it I would try Without it unless it was really unbearable then I would unlatch him and put it back on . It was the best thing they introduced me to especially since i knew nothing about it being a first time mommy . Also the gel soothing nursing pads were helpful too.

I am having that issue now with latching. It becomes painful and i want to keep my daughter off the nipples. Is it only available at the hospital?

@angie.bizz13, no ma'm . If you ask your pediatrician they may have some or if you have a lactation consult . you can also go to the nursing section at Walmart or target if you need it right away and you should find them. The one I had was by medula . I'm not sure if they're other brands

Did you pump also? I'm using one and was told to pump after feeding since it can lower your milk supply. Was this true for you?

@mrs.sims, I was told to pump after feeding if baby didn't fully empty the breast to help with increasing supply. I wanna say it did help . One point in time after doing it I was up to around 6 ounces, but I was always told you'll pump as much as baby is eating and I went back to pumping at least 4-5 ounces . If it doesn't increase you shouldn't worry though unless it's drying up then I would suggest talking to your doctor. I was also drinking a lot of water which helps also.

I feel like this is a stupid question but how do you know if they are empty? Cause unless my boobs are engorged and I'm late on pumping, they don't really get hard like everyone describes

@mrs.sims, lol it's not . The way I would know if they were empty is if they felt like regular boobs ,so soft . When there's milk in it it would feel heavy and hard or I feel lumps if they're engorged .
